When a welding procedure specifies a certain filler metal, then that is the filler metal.
but sometimes you are the one that selects the filler metal and so I hope this video serves as a guide for best practices.

Thanks for the insights Jody. I have used 309 rods for welding a stainless V-band to a cast steel turbo manifold, I did a pre-heat and also a slow cooldown by wrapping it up after. It's still holding up after many heat cycles.

Washington alloy tensileweld worked wonders for me on a lot of jobs where base metals were likely dissimilar and unknown. Especially on large 3500 psi cylinders where cracking on the root seemed to happen a lot with 70s wires by the dissimilar contraction rates. Also lays some beautiful coloring which is an added bonus.

Great breakdown! It’s hard to distill information like this and unfortunately the internet doesn’t help to clarify much. 309L is a great choice due to its properties that help inhibit “stainless dilution” between dissimilar base metals. I believe it’s called “N factor” or something… I can not longer find the website that detailed the differences. The wrong filler will give rise to all sorts of cracking issues. I’m printing and saving both of those charts!

the other one i would add is 312. you see that in that stainless chart a fair bit. if i remember right its used with high carbon steels, backing layers. its a good repair rod and still reasonably common.

He has some videos on that. And from those I can reasonably say that Jody prefers/recommends 2% lanthanated for most jobs, both AC and DC.

I use white for aluminium and I use red or purple (E3) for most steels but you can also use E3 for aluminium. I find the white is easier to keep clean and less likely to suck the puddle up. I have also used red on aluminium, which isn't recommended (but it works) and the tungsten barely balls up.

My guess is a cracking over time with the thermal cycling causing it, but it's pure speculation based on some notions about Al.

Has anyone took that aerospace test where they drop a bubble over the table full of argon, tungsten stickout is ridiculous with no cup, and your sticking your hands through what look like sandblasting gloves in order to weld? Or should I just say Howmet Aerospace?

The European Union welding industry now considers the deoxidizers in ER70S-2 to be obsolete and says anything that can be welded with ER70S-2, can be welded with regular manganese - silicon, ER70S-6 type weld fillers, including the rimmed and semi-rimmed steels that ER70S-2 was originally developed for.

Why there is an E in the code (er70s2) if it's not an electrode (doesn't carry the current, like tungsten does)

Do you think Autogenous welds on exhaust, like a turbo hot side, would be strong enough or should you use a filler rod? I've always wondered and have never been able to test it.
@lightmetalinc.6488
@lightmetalinc.6488 10 ай бұрын
For turbo dumps and hot areas I used filler but I have done many non purged autogenous (fuse) welds on exhaust systems. They hold up just fine. I keep a decent amount of torch angle to so your melting the steel together rather than punching down and penetrating it creating excess carbon. Settings: DC Pulse ~65A 20%, base ~30A @ 2Hz (2 pulses per second) and crank that post flow up to 6sec+, looking after the stainless you can keep it silvery golden the whole way.
@funfun8095
@funfun8095 10 ай бұрын
@@lightmetalinc.6488 Ok, well I'll purge or use solar flux, anyway. Thanks for the info.
@lightmetalinc.6488
@lightmetalinc.6488 10 ай бұрын
@@funfun8095 Often strength only becomes an issue when there is excessive vibration or the exhuast system is poorly mounted. Exhuasts get filled with carbon so the idea that carbon on the inside of the weld will be of detriment is silly. When I first started welding I fused a 45deg pie (4 pieces) no purge excess penetraion and carbon, put it in the press squashed it like a pancake and no welds pulled apart. Don't be afraid to experiment.
