Here’s an easy woodworking project that will teach you how to work with wood veneer. In this video I’ll make two wastepaper baskets, one will be veneered with pressure sensitive veneer and the other using contact cement. This is a great skill building project that will result in a useful piece of furniture for your home.

You can tell the higher level of quality of each piece that Jon makes because each step is deliberate, smooth, and precise. In a couple hundred years, the Antiques Road Show will be appraising his work with stories about how his trash cans were found in palaces, and his artwork was swiped from museums.

I have a chip separator with similarly sized boxes I built to collect and make dumping it out easy. I wish I had thought to make a quick routing guide for my handles. Rounded corners look great and easier. I find it difficult getting a perfect half circle and getting them perfect without a bump in the transition from straight to circle.

I think half-inch ply is a bit overkill for such a small project. I’d have made them out of 3/8 inch ply to make those wastebaskets lighter. I would’ve cut rabbets to give the joinery more surface area. I also would’ve rounded over the top edges to make them more durable. Nice job on painting the inside white.

I agree about the 3/8 but I had 1/2 … I think both sizes would look good

Thank you! Just beginning in my wood working journey. When you have straigt edges like that, I assume just wood glue is not enough? Meaning you also have to use a think ail cut to connect the pieces. What were you using? I am looking for a thin nail gun. Thanks.

I've tried the peal and stick stuff. I'm not the biggest fan. I've found that it seems to really like to expand with the humidity

Agreed. Anything with a veneer that was in the bathroom soon had the veneer peeling off. Gonna stick with natural hardwood when I remodel from here on out.

Assuming you veneer the sides first so the (tiny) edge doesn’t show from the front?

It does seem about the same, but I the using contact cement is a little easier to work with.

Could you please explain your reasoning behind brad nailer orientation making a difference with blowout? In my experience grain running in an angle versus vertical grain makes blowout much more probable but I don’t understand your reasoning here. Thanks in advance.

It's because of the way the ends of the brads are manufactured. Look carefully at the tips of the brads in a clip and you can see how they are cut and angled , sometimes slightly uneven , the angle cuts of the tips can often be off center. When fired from the nail gun the brads tend to want to skew to the right or left not front to back because of the off center tips. Holding the gun in the orientation he showed means the nails will be angling in the length of the plywood. If he held the gun 90 degrees to the way he demonstrated the nails could potentially blow out through the 3/4 sides. A good tip from John. No pun intended

@@philshock3805 Thank You Phil! Very educational! I started into carpentry in 1980 and I have done a lot of finishing work but until now I never really understood the main reason for Brad nail blowout. This just emphasizes the importance of learning from others. Thanks again! John Jensen
