If you've not done it before, city cycling can be a little daunting. Emma, Si and Chris take you through some important considerations when you are new to cycling in an urban environment.

Cycling in an urban environment can be a little different when you are used to being in the open countryside. It's important to always be prepared and one way of doing this is to plan your routes. This can help you incorporate more bike paths and avoid highly congested areas. Apart from the obvious of having a bike, there is actually not that much equipment an urban cyclist needs. We would also advise a helmet, lights and a lock in case you need to do some shopping. Finally, remember to stick to the rules of the road and treat other road users as you'd wish to be treated yourself.

Couldn't agree more on the being courteous advice. A little acknowledgement that you're gonna hold up a car for a few seconds with a raised hand or similar goes a long way. Also, picked up in the USA the call of "on your right/left" when passing pedestrians or cyclists from behind, it just helps them mentally prepare/warn for when you come by. Might prevent them from stepping out sideways, or moving off line at a bad moment.

I've found not every pedestrian will recognize a bike bell, and sometimes you have to say "on your left" or something of the sort. Also, Im a really big fan of racks/baskets/panniers, I've always found backpacks slightly uncomfortable and very sweaty when Im cycling.

I can recommend a backpack like the asaklitt 18L, its curved so the backpack is a few cm from your back, and against the back is a net instead transporting heat and sweat from your body. works good for me! www.clasohlson.com/medias/sys_master/9582675197982.jpg

I am so frustrated at how to pass on the trails. whether ringing a bell or calling out, it never seems to work. people either have earbuds in or just don't hear or when they do hear they stop and move the wrong way.

I love this city cycling series, because for many it is the start into cycling life, commuting another step further until you end up with a road bike and are faced with the n+1 issue (that way at least it has been for me). Courtesy is a big thing but also self-confidence, shared space means that you are allowed to be there, even if others (often cars) do not agree. Overall: just don't be a jerk and get your expectations right, racing through a pedestrian zone is just not possible so don't get stressed out if you're forced to go slower, safe and enjoyable cycling (no matter where and with what bike)! :-)

City cycling is fantastic. Love riding in traffic. Aa great way to help learn to assert yourself too. Can't be timid riding in traffic. I was taught at school, here in Canada, how to signal on your bike. I think that is something you should include in a future video, assuming that is common practice in most other jurisdictions. Unfortunately where I live now people have very poor cycling etiquette. The worst is the number of people who ride against traffic.

Global Cycling Network Also a big safety tip for those cyclists who think they are being safe. Never ever stay stopped behind cars at traffic lights. It's the danger zone that is most likely to get you killed. There is many rear end collisions to stopped vehicles at traffic lights. Being a cyclist in a car sandwich is not good. Sitting right behind a cars rear light is the biggest mistake at night, the cars slowing behind might just think your rear light is the cars infront of you.

@GCN, any tips for riding in traffic up a hill? Happened to me recently and it was impossible to get any momentum and hard to keep clipping in and out of pedals. Had to walk the bike on the sidewalk for a little while. Flat pedals would have probably helped some, but the constant stopping was a problem.

I found that beginners sometimes ride too slowly (out of fear) without realising that they are just making it harder for themselves. Also beginners often hug the curb instead of using a confortable amount of space.

Hi. There is something very important about lights. In Europe, the front and rear lights can not be intermittent, only permanent light. At least, this is what the road circulation regulations dictate, although not logic. In Germany, for example, it is forbidden to sell devices that have the intermittent light mode. By the way, in my opinion and I think that in most people, with flashing lights it is easier to see you. I think it is a rule inherited from motor vehicles, which can circulate at a higher speed and through the center of the road, but with the bikes the regulations should evolve or adapt, we are going to less speed, with less visual volume and in an area very limited
@simonbradley7031
@simonbradley7031 6 жыл бұрын
Alvaro Cuesta was also the same in the UK when flashing led lights first came out, now almost everyone uses them, they definitely attract attention more than a constant light but using a constant and separate flasher in the same unit is the way to go in my opinion
@CursedJuggernaut
@CursedJuggernaut 6 жыл бұрын
well i see your point, but there is also another side aswell. People with epilepsy (or migraines and other types of neurological disorder) can get an attack because of the flashing lights. Every person has a different tolerance level of course, but it is close to impossible to regulate how much flashing is still save for everyone. Lets say one person might be fine with 5 flashes per second, but another might get a stroke. I myself can tell you from experience, that i got some migraine attacks from some flashing lights, just because i had to ride behind someone for 10min.
@antonomaseapophasis5142
@antonomaseapophasis5142 6 жыл бұрын
Alvaro Cuesta Tests have shown that since flashing lights leave the object bearing the flashing light in the dark in the period when light is not actually flashing, observers do not track the bearer of the flashing light as well as a bearer of a constant light. Hence the ban on safety lights which only signal the presence of a. cyclist in flashes. I believe that lights which pulse in intensity above a constant light are permitted.
@RavyDavy
@RavyDavy 5 жыл бұрын
in the UK, the only law for bike lights are: "At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85). " Other than that, it doesn't matter whether its permanent, or intermittent. Personally, I run a dynamo with front and rear light (both with standlights), and I also turn on flashing lights when it gets really dark, so it catches drivers eyes.

Confidence is the #1 best point when it comes to safety. The confidence to move into and take the middle lane when turning right (in uk, left in us) and to move into the middle section when crossing at a junction makes cycling much much safer. Squeezing yourself to the edge of the lane will just make cars pass you even closer and make those awkward turns even harder. Also, never ever break traffic laws (stop at red lights and zebra crossings). Amount of time you make up rarely makes a difference and makes us all look bad

I found a bar end mirror to be crucial in the city. People tend to swerve a little when doing head checks, and it takes your attention off where you’re going for longer. No one else uses them? I’m I just uncool?

Nice intro video! Some bike lights can be obnoxiously bright if not angled down. You will temporality blind other riders on bike paths with a Fly CE6 on high beam. As an NYC rider my continual focus is on: 1) not getting doored (looking to see if there are people in the “parked” cars”) 2) cars pulling out from curbs and 3) not getting right hooked at intersections.

Please don't rush to get in the bike box at lights IF the light has been red on approach. That is a sure fire way to end up in a blind spot if the lights go green and traffic starts moving. It is a MASSIVE contributing factor to cyclists getting taken out by vehicles turning left. If you must filter on a red light, do it on the right (in UK) as you are more likely to be see and able to evade.

Cycling in traffic can be very dangerous. My main problem was riding on a crosswalk with a bike, which drivers aren't expecting. So better to get off bike if switching to sidewalk or crosswalks, in busy areas. Also helmet mirror is very helpful. My reflexes have saved me from getting hit by cars multiple times, so sometimes even as a very defensive rider you can have close calls

As a Semi-Pro Cyclist living in Malaysia. City Cycling is kinda dangerous especially in cities like Kuching, Johor Bahru, Georgetown. And to mention Klang Valley in general. Due to lawlessness on the road and drivers in Malaysia has a term. "Semua nak cepat". Which translates everything in a hurry. But to gain experience and to increase your stamina + knowing dangerous situations can be good at times. But as usual be aware on the road at all times. 😉

Learn to see beyond your field of view around corners. This is a skill that is crucial to your safety around the city. A person inside a car can not ditch the car in 1 second like you can on a bike. Learn to look downfield to intersections coming up.

Something else: ringlocks, which are attached to the bike are way more convenient. I'd highly recommend those. Mostly a chainlock is added to the bike for occasional use, when the situation requires it. And bikes with a more upright position are more pleasant in daily life. More comfortable, and you are more agile. In a literal translation, we call them 'ladies bikes' and 'gentlemens bikes'. The name says it all ;).

While the Cycliq lights are amazing, they tend to work better when properly tightened to the bar, not shifting up and down to point at the sky or the road a la Emma’s!

Third point would be to ask you: could you make it a thing at GCN to look for the sources of worries, anger and danger for cyclists and use your popularity to publish those. Like for example dangerous traffic situations, bad laws or police that harrasses cyclists instead of controling speed and dangerous overtakings of cars etc. You could for example make it some part of the GCN show to rate the worst and the best policy changes etc.? After all i feel GCN is a bit a part of us all by now and that would be a great way to use it as a platform for lobbying for a safer, better and nicer cycling environment.

As a 'Duchie' the video is alien, but interesting to see the different perspective. Might be fun to shoot a video like this in a cycling country like the netherlands or Denmark or so. And a heads up: Amsterdam is far from the most cycling friendly city in the Netherlands.

Depending on the location riding 2 abreast is not allowed and you can end up with a ticket. Riding one after another in a single file is polite and a much safer option for the city.

Not sure what you mean by little pingey as I have two small bells that work great for me, variants of the Mirrycle Incredibell. They have been great both at home and when traveling all over Europe. I was a little bummed that the GCN team talked about bells but did not seem to actually use them!

Regarding the front light: PLEASE AIM IT DOWN and NOT STRAIGHT ON. It blinds oncoming traffic in low light situations. It's the equivalent of driving a car with the HIGH BEAMS on. Horrible for the safety of others.

Google Maps bike directions blow goats for bus money, then walk home, like, 80% of the time. Something OpenStreetMap based like Osmand or Magic Earth tends to get the job done much more accurately.

I'm new to cycling after many years. I need to build up my confidence. I find it terrifying sometimes with all the traffic around me. The streets are narrow in Ireland and the cycle lanes and very few. Was stopped at a red light earlier in the city and a taxi guy behind started beeping to move into the cycle lane. I shouted back that I can't because it's full of people.( the lane is outside a busy nightclub) what was I meant to do?

to people riding through a city on a regular basis since childhood this seems so obvious. had i not learned this on my own i'd probably be dead by now. watching out for other people, only running red lights when its somewhat save, not runnning over pedestrians when you are going fast, etc. pretty essential for survival i'd say. one think that was not mentioned however was checking if car drivers have actually noticed you when riding through crowded traffic. i do this by looking through the windshield and making sure theyre looking in my direction before its too late to stop in case the car doesnt slow down. saved my life many times with stupid car drivers looking on their phone instead of payiing attention on the road.

UK, west of Scotland here. What about cycling up one way high street? Contraflow is not obvious or a thing where I live. But police cycle up one way street on their push bikes. So. Am I right in thinking it is contraflow and i can cycle up a high street. Only ask because a pedestrian ran across the road and blamed me. Road was quiet and i was casually cycling up the middle. Clear to see. The one day I dont have my go pro on too. Hah thanks for advice

Great video and tips but sadly I have to add that depending on which part of the world you are cycling on it’s the attitude of other road users which dictates whether those tips work or not. Case in point if u r cycling in south east Asia where drivers do not respect cyclist at all (in fact they are hostile) then any safety thing u do may not work. You just need to be on your toes and dnt trust any driver all the time.

In London at least (AQI - air quality index 50 - 70) the benefits of cycling outweight the pollution risks. Especially comparing to driving or taking the tube where the pollution pools. I did take my running shoe so Beijing once but the AQI was 450 when I was there, so decided to stay indoors. Most masks wont filter PM2

Once I rode a bike on the roundabout with traffic lights. I confidently sticked to the middle of my lane and kept up my speed with cars. It was a middle lane, because I was going straight through the roundabout. And than an idiot motorist (on my left) rolls through the red light and honks on me because I dared to be there. I replied courteously: FECK OFF, IM IN MY LANE! A moment later, passed the roundabout, he slows down and tries to educate me: you are on the roundabout. The courtesy my arse!

There was a phone zombie the other day who walked across the road in front of cars without looking anywhere except at their phone. Then they crossed half the cycle path in front of me and then just stood in the middle of the lane staring at their phone. It was one of the lanes in this very video. Smart phones used by dimwits.
