Notes: I'm obviously not suggesting that he invented ALL of these moves. Also, some of his other moves - not shown here - were never again duplicated since.
Highlighted players: Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Isiah Thomas, Allen Iverson, Jason Williams, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton, Steve Nash, Rajon Rondo, Ricky Rubio, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Tracy McGrady, Chris Paul, Joe Johnson, Mark Jackson, Kyrie Irving, Penny Hardaway, Derrick Rose, Mark Price, Manu Ginobili, Chauncey Billups, Dwyane Wade, Tony Parker, Tim Hardaway, Reggie Theus, Stephon Marbury, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Pau Gasol and Goran Dragic.
"Pistol was a big influence on me. I've often tried his moves on the basketball court. What he did on the court are things that players today still can't do."--Isiah Thomas
"I learned all my tricks from Pete Maravich."--Kobe Bryant
"I've got a lot of Pistol Pete in my game."--Steve Nash
"Pistol Pete is a legend to all who understand the history of basketball."--Jason Kidd
"He was one of the truly great players that could fill an arena. He was an excellent player. He could dribble with both hands, shoot with both hands, and see the whole court. I enjoyed playing with Pete. His biggest influence to my mind was his ability to pass. When he stepped on the court, it was like a warning sign: 'Watch out. I know how to play this game.'"--Larry Bird
"Pete was 'The Man.' I'd just sit there and shake my head and say to myself: 'How'd he do that?'"--Magic Johnson
"We're all doing things he did first."--Steve Nash
"(Oscar) Robertson was the best guard I ever played against. Jerry West was the best I ever played with. And Pete is the best I've ever seen."--Elgin Baylor
"He was the greatest ball handler I've ever seen in my life. He could do things with the basketball that were unbelievable."--Rick Barry
"A lot of guys break the laws of gravity. Pete breaks the laws of physics."--Red Auerbach
"The stuff that Pistol did with the ball was the breaking ground for what we can do today."--Jason Kidd
"Through following basketball and enjoying his flair for the game, I feel as though I knew him. He was a great scorer and a great passer at the same time. The passes he made were unbelievable. He was so ahead of his time."--Magic Johnson
"Oh my. He did things with the basketball that players - still today - can't do. If Maravich was playing today, he'd be a god."--Isiah Thomas
"All those things that made him a great player, they were also his curse. It was hard for him to blend his game with other players. He had been groomed to see how many points he could score rather than how many games he could win. That's the enigma of Pete Maravich."--Paul Westphal
"Like a master chess player, Pete Maravich saw things that nobody else did."--Bill Walton
"He was the original. When you talk about 'Showtime,' you talk about creativity, and bringing a whole different concept to the game of basketball. Pete was the original. He opened the minds of a lot of players as to how the game should be played. What he could do with the basketball at full speed was incredible. He was the best ball handler I ever saw. Ever."--Pat Riley
"He was a startling player. One of a half dozen I've ever seen who I'd buy a ticket to see play. He was as dazzling a passer and as great a ball handler as I've ever seen. He was like a great singer with a style all his own, a pacing that was different, a flair for the unusual."--Chick Hearn
"You were never quite sure what he was going to do with the ball in the open court. He had a thousand moves to either shoot it or pass it."--Jack Ramsay, Hall of Fame Coach
"The best showman of all time? I'd probably have to say Pistol Pete."--Isiah Thomas

Pete's single-handed influence to the Game of Basketball and all players that came after... is IMMENSE. Deserves all the acclamation in the world for being a ground-breaker, oh so transcendent, in an era where he caught a ton of heat for that magic innovation he did on a basketball court. *which became more than accepted/embraced play*.. later on. He'll continue to remain an inspiration to many.

"And you never see a white boy doin' that on top of it!" That part cracks me up every time. Pete was not white or black. He was a basketball android assembled in a secret lab outside of Pittsburgh. Like other eccentric geniuses of their craft like Jimi Hendrix or Van Gogh, he was an alien from a different dimension. A true basketball Maestro.

BasketballJones48021 Great music score! I was reading some fool saying Pistol Pete wasn't a great player. Just his NBA stats alone are Hall of fame-worthy (12 seasons, 24.2PPG, 5.4APG, 5-time all-star, 3-time 1st team All-NBA), but to STILL be the all-time Div 1 college scoring leaders (and freshmen back then weren't even eligible to play varsity!) with a mind-numbing 44.2PPG average won't EVER be eclipsed, IMO. Great stuff, well put together!

Truly amazed by the skills and flair of Pete, truly a predecessor to the amazing playmakers such as Magic, Bird, Steve Nash, Jason Williams, Rondo and Manu Ginobili. He seems to have the irresistable mix of vision and flair with a touch for the unusual; the behind-the-back passes, nutmegs, circus shots and even turnovers while trying to find the daylight remind me of Manu the most. I would pay to watch him play all day. Thank you for the awesome video!

Truly informative, educational sports video. Maybe Cousy, Baylor, Dr J, Connie Hawkins had a similar influence on the game. No one can say Maravich stole the "Black man's moves". Why ? Because they all stole his. Pistol Pete was the first. No one can take that away from him. R.I.P. the original 'soul man' of basketball.
@KennethKetchum
@KennethKetchum 5 жыл бұрын
1926 was when the Harlem Globetrotters were created. need i say MORE? that is almost fifty years before Pete was born. I take nothing away from this white "brother" but we were doing these moves long before we were allowed to play with other whites. I am sorry, but Pete was NOT the first "soul man" on the NBA court. Realize WHY blacks were not allowed to play in the NBA and how we formed our own leagues. Then get back to me. Yes, Pete was great but he did NOt create these moves ALONE. We all come from somewhere. Dr J -to MJ, etc. By the way, did we forget WHY the ABA was formed? Because the NBA did not like Pete's style of play like Dr. J. It was Dr. J's style that changed the NBA for more showmanship AND athleticism. I am no hater and Love Pete. There is plenty of black and white footage to prove my point. I love pete just as much as I love Jason Williams.
@maninblack9850

@@KennethKetchum Jason Williams had nowhere near the shooting nor scoring ability of Pistol. Pistol could do everything Jason could do while keeping his hand on top of the ball at all times and did it 35 years earlier while being an offensive threat from everywhere. They're not comparable players at all except for their flashiness. I'm not taking anything away from Jason Williams, he was a very good point guard in his day, but Pistol was an all-time great and the greatest college player ever.

Physically Rubio will remind you of Pistol Pete, and they both have great passing and ball-handling skills with that sense of flashy basketball... But Ricky is a bit smaller and he can't even begin to see Maravich when it comes to overall scoring/shooting, not even remotely close there. Isiah's skill-type/level and even game sure do remind Maravich's, he even mentions Pistol Pete plenty of times, he was a big fan... They had many similarities on the court, despite having different physiques and such. And Zeke could sure make it flashy but - unlike Maravich - he also had that killer mentality, he was a great leader, hustled hard on D when it mattered, was cold blooded and knew how to balance his game pretty well.

Got some news for homeboy in the beginning of this video at about the 30 second mark. Some white guys have native American dna is them which makes them be very good athletes. They do not necessarily have to have some black boy dna in them to be good athletes. Mac McClung is an example of a current player from a small town in appalachian mountain region of southwest Virginia who has some pistol.pete type moves in his game.

Wonder why Oscar Robertson seems so dismissive of the Pistol? He is the only great player past or present Ive ever heard say anything unkind about him.

First and foremost, you have to understand that that’s how Oscar is, plenty of times bitter towards players who have more shine than him, even after his retirement... And then you have Pete who broke Robertson’s NCAA scoring record, who was a young hot shot getting all the attention everywhere, entering the NBA when the Big O was already past his peak... I’ve heard a few more players say some unkind words about Maravich though, mainly - his once teammate - Lou Hudson(may he rest in peace).

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. It seems that every generation looks down on their predecessor, and the further back you go, the further they look down. Thinking that their generation is the cat's meow in music, fashion and of course sports, and everybody that came before them are squares and less talented stumble bums. WRONG!
