Bass cab roundup! / Scott giving away his FAVORITE BASS?! | EP106 | The SBL Podcast #106
What a stupid question, right? As bass players, there are few things more satisfying than pulling the trigger on a new bass, but would we be better served expanding our amp collections instead? Will a new amp really make your bass sound any better? In today’s episode Ian and Scott talk you through a couple of different viewpoints that will help you determine how you might spend your hard-earned money. A new bass, or a better amp?
In this podcast you're going to learn:
- Why every studio has an Ampeg B-15
- How Ian became amp obsessed.
- Why Scott’s not a huge fan of combo amps.
- Whether a good amp can really make any bass sound good?
- Why some players insist on using tube amps.
- And much, much more!

Cabs I love - DNS-210 and DNS-410 by DNA (David Nordschow Amplification) and two Eden EX-112 cabs BEST I've ever played through or heard is my DNS-410. Bought the DNS-410 in 2015 figuring I'd never need to buy another cab. Handles 1400-watts rms with a max SPL of 137db. Clearest, cleanest, most articulate sound ever, with a really tight and focused bottom end! I used my Eden WT500/800 amp with it and it bridges at 800-watts into 8Ω, so plenty of power to drive it. However, it scared the crap out of small clubs and they typically would make me use some small 112 combo or such that they had. In 2019 I bought the DNS-210 figuring that wouldn't scare a small brewpub but could also use it for medium sized venues too. It has the same sonic qualities that my DNS-410 has but it's smaller and lighter. It handles 700-watts rms, goes down to 34Hz, and has max SPL of 134db. Using my 800-watt Eden amp bridged at 800-watts into it, It even handles large venues with the Master only turned up to about 10:15. So I use it for ALL my indoor gigs now. Still pull out my DNS-410 for outdoors and music festivals but use the 210 for everything indoors. I bought my Eden EX-112 cabs, which are super compact, about a year before I got my DNS-210.Since I was being forced to use a Peavey 112 combo at a brewpub where we hosted open mic nights over 40 times a year, and I couldn't get a decent sound out of it, I ordered an Eden EX-112 (handles 300-watts rms street price of $269). I have a friend in Derwick, England who has used those cabs for years and sings their praises. He convinced me to give them a try. They are at the low end of Eden's pricing being part of the E-series, and instead of a tweeter horn they use a whizzer cone (cone within a cone). So they are really compact. I was dubious about the high mids and highs right until I got the cab and used it on Friday night. It sounded sooooo good with smooth highs and surprising bottom end for a single 112, that I ordered a second one the next day. Two of them together sounds better than just one by itself although Ian would hate the look because they are so small. They are only 15¼" wide x 16" tall x14¾" deep. My big class A/B Eden amp hung over the edges pretty badly on both sides, but man did I get a lot of compliments on my sound with that rig, especially by other bass players. Finally bought an Eden TN226 amp (225-watts) which fit nicely inside the width of those 112's and was enough for small venues. These 12's do definitely have a different sound than the 10's in my DNA cabs. For small venues I carry that little TN 226 in its shoulder bag; throw my gig bag over the opposite shoulder; grab my bass in one hand; and grab my 30-lb 112 in the other and away I'll go. I can move it all in or out in one trip! So I'll sometimes still use that EX-112 for small venues. Another cab that I loved was one I had from 1971 until 1976. I was touring with a nightclub group back then and the guitarist and keys players had just bought Vox Super Beatle amps because Thomas Organ was discontinuing Vox in the US. They just buried me with my 50-watt, all tube, 1966 Fender Bassman, that I bought new in 1966. It was the last of the blackface Fenders and had the large 212 cab. Sounded good but when the guitarist, the keys player, the drummer, and the female vocalist all tell you to turn up and you're as loud as it can go, you have to get something better. We were playing a very large club in Lincoln, Nebraska and they had a good music store in town. So I traded in my '66 Bassman and I came out of that music store with a Standel MCIIb/SAM30b piggy-back amp that was super clear and extremely loud. It had a bass reflex powered speaker cab with two CTS 15" speakers, each of which had its own 100-watt Solid state amp. So it was a 200-watt powered cab. The 4 ports were aligned vertically next to but separated from the speakers and If I was playing with the volume dial at #3 (9 o'clock) it would make my bell bottoms flap. Thing with that powered cab was that it was never real loud on stage but it projected like you wouldn't believe. About 30-feet in front of me it was easily twice as loud as it was from on stage. This place was a college hangout and occupancy was 900+. The room was longer than it was wide. First night I turned it up to #5 on the dial (12 o'clock), which sounded good on stage. At the other end of the room next to the wall though people were covering their ears. Our female vocalist headed on out there and didn't quite make it to the end of the room but about 100-ft away (end of her mic cord) she said it was way too loud. I had to drop it down to #3 for indoor venues but could turn it up to #5 for outdoor, wide open venues. Unfortunately that amp and cab were stolen from me in 1976 along with my 1965 Jazz Bass that I had bought in 1966 and a couple of Shure mics. I never had "too little rig for the gig" with that set up. About the only cab I ever hated was a GK115bpx, which was part of a package they called their "Brat Pack" that I bought in 2006 because I needed something to gig with and I'd used some GK gear before that was quite good. This set was terrible. Without a doubt, it's the worst 115 cab I've every used. No matter what amp I used through it, that cab was boomy and muddy. By itself or with another cab I would have to drop the bass EQ down to 10 o'clock to stop or at least slow down the mud. Paired it with and acoustic B410 when those came out and dropping the bass EQ didn't do any favors to that acoustic 410. In 2010, I bought my Eden WT500/800 directly from David Nordschow and it's a dual powerblock amp. So I plugged the acoustic 410 into one side and the GK115bpx into the other. Then used the balance knob and turned it to about 10:30 towards the 410 side. That gave more power to the 410 and less to the GK115 cab and it cleared up the mud without the need of dropping the Bass EQ. The acoustic 410 loved that and I gigged that set-up from 2010 until 2015 when I bought my DNS410 and got rid of that stack. Was very sad to see that GK be a piece of crap, because I had used some GK gear back in the 80's and it was good. This 115 was terrible and possibly the only cab I actually hated.

I agree with Scott on the Markbass 115 cab ... it sounds amazing. I also love the Fender 610 bassman cab and even the Fender Rumble 210 cab is not bad at all. on top of that my Fender Bassman 215 cab (1980) sounds great as well. As Ian says when connecting an Ampeg SVT CL to an Ampeg 410 CL cab is one of the best bass sounds ever.

I love these guys! They talk about their support from the other SBL people and how great they are. But what makes these podcasts so good is how Scott (and Ian) are such true, clear, honest souls that can articulate the many facets of music/life from a perspective that we can all relate to. And you know the SBL crew love that! I'm sure it's what make their jobs so great. Great fun, these two!

I think players that came up in the 90's all like 4x10 cabs. I bought a Hartke 4x10 with paper cones and an aluminum tweeter in '95. I still have it. It's paired to an '80s Peavey 400bh mk3 I've also had since then. It's a monstrously loud and ridiculously heavy pair. And it feels like home.

Ian is quite correct about Cadbury. My oldest son lives in England and whenever he visits he brings various Cadbury chocolate. Our youngest son lives in Australia and when we visited back in 2018 the Cadbury chocolate there was the same as the English ones. The US Cadbury is good, but nowhere near as good as the English ones!

Scott you should come out to the Pacific Northwest of the US and try to peak some of the Cascade Mountain peaks or some peaks Along the Eastern Scarp of the Sierra. Comparatively easy is climbing Mt. Hood in Oregon. You can drive to Timberline Lodge (elevation 6,000-ft or1828.8 meters) where the glacier is right out the back door of the lodge. The peak of Mt. Hood sits at 11,249-ft (3,428.7 Meters) and there are multiple ways up. You really have to be careful about the weather there though because it can change quickly. People have been trapped and died by sudden snowstorms there. So don't try to peak it because it looks like a nice day. Get the up to date weather, not yesterdays forecast. You can also come up to the Seattle Washington area and climb Mt. Rainier at 14,417 ft (4,394 m). That's some serious mountain climbing but there are a lot day hikes you can take kids on too where you can drive up and explorer from there. If you're really into 14,000-ft. peaks, there's a spot in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range near Bishop, California where you can climb a mountain and be surrounded on all sides by 14,000-ft tall mountain peaks. I'd have to ask my brother where that is because he did it many years ago and took pictures. I think he said you can see seven 14,000-ft. peaks from there. He was a serious rock climber/mountain climber at the time and spent an entire month in the back country of the Eastern Sierra Nevada going in near Bishop and coming out at Tioga Pass in Yosemite National Park. And of course there are also a lot of 14,000-ft mountains in the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming and Montana. There's a spot in Wyoming that will take you on a multi-day fly-fishing tour using llamas instead of pack horses for fishing high-mountain streams and lakes.

Any serious bass cab conversation needs to include EPIFANI. Otherwise, your missing out on one the most revered speaker designers in the bass world, Nick Elifani. Not one of the cab brands discussed here design their our own speakers or have innovated like Nick has done. Just ask Eminence and Mark Bass who they look up too. Epifani’s dual impedance D.I.S.T. cabs (4 or 8 Ohm) are a game changer, not to mention their sound and light weight! I will speak with Nick and try to get you use his new D.I.S.T. 2x12 with a D.I.S.T. 410 for big stages. However, either cab is plenty for smaller shows. I will speak with Nick and try to get you guys some cabs to review.

Dudes! I love SWR stuff :-( My drummer has a rehearsal place and there's an SM-900 head and a Goliath 4x10 cab and that rig is great! And the best cab I've ever had was an SWR Henry 8x8. What a cab, HO LEE PHUCK!!! I still regret having to sell that one 7 or 8 years ago. But GOD, was it heavy, and now, at 44, I prefer, well, more *portable* stuff. On the other hand, I've never really liked GK stuff. As for Ashdown - it all depends on the particular model. I had a Spyder 550 head and it was awesome, but I also had a cheap MAG 4x10 cab and it was the worst cab ever, hands down. Comming back to SWR - why did they go down? Well, Fender bought them, end of story. Fender Corp is well known for killing the brands they acquire. They're like the GM of music industry. GM bought and finally killed Saab for example (I loved those old classic Saab 900s by the way - we call them "Crocodiles" here in Poland), and Fender bought and killed SWR, among others. And since you mention transportation and fitting cabs into trunks etc... I once fitted that Henry 8x8 into a '94 Citroen ZX hatchback. Yes, I had to fold the rear seats but it got in - and it was in a roadcase with casters! That car was really spacious. And comfy. And it drove really nice. Shame it was completely run down so I finally sold it. But the best car I've ever had, both for hauling gear and just for driving in, was the legendary Swedish brick, the indestructible Nordic tank, the '92 Volvo 940 wagon. I loved it so much and not a day passes without me missing it. Was it fast? No it wasn't. Not by any stretch if the imagination. But it felt like home. And it swallowed that Henry 8x8 TRANSVERSELY, without having to fold the back seats. What a car it was. I'd get another one within a heartbeat but the prices of good ones, especially with turbo Redblocks (mine was a naturally aspirated 2.3) skyrocketed in the last several years. They became classics - and I totally understand why. They're just awesome. They're like houses on wheels. You get behind the wheel and feel... just cozy. And calm. And, well, happy. I miss it more than I miss the Henry. Now, I use my '10 Seat Altea XL (yes, Americans, there's a Spanish car brand named Seat, they're a part of the VW group) both as a daily drive and as my main source of income (I'm a taxi driver) and it's perfectly OK, comfy and spacious enough, no issues, cheap servicing, runs on LPG like a champ, but it's nowhere near as lovely as that old brick was. Old Volvos are the best, full stop.

On bass cabs. I've ended up with a 10*10 in the jam room. An Ashdown 6*10 on top of a Marshall 4*10. Powered by a Peavey Pro hybrid head, 500W at 2 Ohm. It's ridiculous and I love it. I am thinking about replacing the bottom 4*10 with 2 12s or 2 15s though. Just to hear it. Probably be a mess 😅 (Edit - typo)

OK and finally answering Ian's question about why did Eden go away, here's what happened. I was one of the moderators on the Eden Forum from 2010 until Marshall turned off the forum one day without any notice. David Nordschow founded Eden in 1976. He primarily designed and installed PA and sound support systems, including large permanent installations and touring rigs. David was the first to bring a three-way time-aligned PA speaker system to the US market. Next thing you know he's designing custom bass cabinets to touring professionals. Then David put together a team and partnered with SWR incorporating four 10" speakers plus an integral tweeter horn in one cab with built-in crossover. This was SWR's first Goliath cab. He and his team continued with their 3-year contract with SWR, designing, engineering, and manufacturing bass cabinets under the SWR Brand. At the end of that contract he launched the Eden line of amps and cabinets. David continued to design and bring new amps and cabs with three notable series in his cabs: the Eden T-series (T for with Tweeter), the XLT (Xtra Low with Tweeter) series which were voiced with a low-mid hump which gives them a great up-front sound; and the XST (Xtra Smooth with Tweeter) cabs which have a much lower fundamental and a very flat frequency response. For years after introducing the XST cabs, the XLT's outsold them because of that low mid hump. You can add some low-mid boost at the amp to get a sound similar to the XLT sound from the XST cabs. In early 2000's (2001 or 2002) David sold Eden to USM but stayed on to run it and continue designing new amps and cabs. Finally in late 2008 David left Eden to start DNA (David Nordschow Amplification). As is typical of his products, he designed new speakers for them. They are high efficiency, high power handling, long throw speakers and incorporate flared and textured ports which accelerate air through them much more quickly than standard ports. He released those in 2011. In 2012 he released his first DNA class D amp, the DNA-1350 (1350-watts rms into either 4Ω or 3Ω), weighing in at just 7-lbs. I hate to say it, but I don't remember exactly when the DNA-800 came out although I have one myself. I think it was 2015 or so. It's the little brother putting out 800-watts into 4Ω and "almost full power" into 2Ω. It has a built-in compressor with adjustable threshold and ratio for about 1/2 the price of the DNA1350 ($799 vs. $1,495) Back in 2012 (Dec. 31, 2011 actually) USM sold Eden to Marshall, which opened up wider distribution throughout Europe and Australia as well as anywhere Marshall amps were sold. That worked pretty well for a while. Marshall designed a couple of class A/B amps, the WTP900 and the WTP600 to replace the previous WT800C and WT550B. They added a second tube to the amps putting this one in the gain section, which allowed you to actually get slight break-up to really dirty distortion out of them (Marshall knows how to do overdrive and distortion). Power was less than the amps it replaced because both of the WT amps could operate at 2Ω and the new WTP amps could not. In 2016, Marshall/Eden produced the Terra Nova series of class D amps. I have the TN-226 that I got specifically for playing small brewpubs and it sounds every bit as good as my big Eden amp, just less power. Definitely a step up from the old WTX series. Then Marshall moved the cab making to their Marshall Cab shop in England. The US speakers had to be sent to England and put in the cabs and then shipped back to the US for sale. As a result the Eden cabs went up significantly in price. Then, in March of 2021 Marshall sold Eden to Gear4Music, a very large retailer in the UK with the agreement that Marshall would still do the manufacturing. That has been the reason that Eden has virtually disappeared from the market. Gear4Music did a good job selling Eden gear but Marshall has sucked at manufacturing it. Things will be on backorder for 9-months or more and almost everything is on backorder. For instance their EX-112 cabs are available to order with expected delivery in April of 2024. If you want to see what they currently have, just go to Gear4Music.com and choose Eden as the brand. You can't sell what you don't have and Marshall has been abysmal about manufacturing. Plus, who's going to do designing any new Eden gear? Marshall clearly has no impetus to do so. That actually is really sad because the class D amps that Eden has now are very nice and produce a sound that is every bit as warm as the WT hybrid amps were like. Sad thing was they stopped at 500-watts int 4Ω. They would be very competitive with an 800-watt version of their TN-501 amp, but don't expect anything new from them. Not sure how long they can hold on with this but they are still holding on by the skin of their teeth. I was accepted as a DNA Endorsing Artist in 2019, which is also when I bought my DNS-210 cab. I was very happy to be included in that group. Then, at the beginning of 2023, David Nordschow announced that he was shuttering DNA amps due to parts no longer being available for his designs. He will be doing warranty repairs though. Like a lot of companies, the supply chain problems from Covid-19 put him in a world of hurt. In fact it put some of his suppliers out of business entirely and one of those that went out of business was the only factory in the world that made some of the parts he uses in his DNA-800 and DNA-1350 amps. I bought a DNA-800 through my Endorsing Artist rep in late April of 2021. I got a call beck from him a couple of days later saying that David's amp factory did not have any completed DNA-800's available and were waiting on parts. However, he said that David told him he has enough parts on hand to build one for me if I can wait a couple of weeks. I said, "no problem" and in mid-May I received it. That may have been on of the last ones made and David was kind enough to sign it for me. I really hated to see him close up shop because he designs great bass gear, his cabs are amazing, and his amps are top-notch. Hopefully he will start designing bass gear again, but it's also possible he may just retire. That would definitely be our loss.

@@BarefacedAudio I actually ended up buying the WT500/800 (500-watts bridged upgraded to 800-watts bridged) directly from David Nordschow (aka: David Eden) in 2010 that David used to develop and test all the cabs he developed between 1999 and 2009 when he left Eden. David had put it up for sale on E-bay and although I bid on it, someone outbid me. But the winning bid was below the reserve he set, so it didn't sell. Lane Baldwin, who among other things was in charge of the Eden Forum them, knew I'd bid on it and asked if I got it. Told him no, that I was outbid but the reserve wasn't met. He asked me what the most was I could pay for it so I told him (was the same as my bid amount). He said, "let me check with David to see if he'll sell it for that." Next day he told me David said yes and gave me David's e-mail to arrange the sale and to Paypal him the money. About a week later I had it in my hands and I gigged it all the time between 2010 and 2021 when I bought a DNA-800 amp also from David.

@@BarefacedAudio I had to chuckle a bit at your non-mention of Gibson's appetite for other brands. When I was touring in the early 70's, I had a Standel piggy-back MCIIb/SAM30b amp that was just excellent, both loud and clear. It had a 215 bass reflex powered cab with 4 round ports mounted vertically next to the speakers. A year or so after I bought mine they had a bad batch of circuit boards and had to replace virtually everyone that went out the door. Gibson bought the company and took care of the warranties, keeping them a live for a a couple of years. During that time a number of the features of the Solid State Standel amps made it into Gibson amps. Then they changed the name of Standel to S/G amps (Standel/Gibson) and a year later it was gone for good. Basically the Big G ate it; digested it; and integrated the things they liked into their own brand. Hard to fault them from a business standpoint, but very sad to see from an end-user and proponent of the brand. Toured from '71 to '73 with mine and then gigged weekends with it. In 1976 all my touring gear, including the '65 Jazz I bought in 1966, my Shure mics, and my Standel amp. Of course Fender did the same thing with other brands too, such as Sunn, which was recently recently re-sold and re-introduced 21-years after Fender closed them up.

I think that the cab you choose has to be in balance with the bass you play, I'll give an example: J. Berlin Plays his bass with the neck PU completely off, the bridge PU is moved very close to the bridge (so even more highs), than he uses steel wound strings (even more highs than nicklewounds) ... So no wonder he likes a 15" without tweeter: his bass is all about highs and a clear sound so to me it seems logical to pair this with a 15" and no tweeter. But this 15 and no tweeter, would anyone choose it to use with a P with flats, this in combination with a soft touch, letting the amp do the work? I guess it would give you no definition at all ... So: what bass are you going to pair with what speaker ... So I would like to know from Scott: what cab do you like with your P with flats, and witch one would you use with your old Overwater Jazz with new rounds? (or the Banana bass)
