Comparing the direct (clean) DI signal from the Jad Freer CAPO pedal against the ACME Motown DI and the BAE 1073 DMP.
All samples are of the same recorded performance direct from the basses used - levels have simply been normalised to the same volume level to allow a fair comparison - no other processing. Audio interface: Steinberg UR-242.
Basses used:
Sire P5 with Vintage 1973 Fender Pickups (La Bella LTF-4A Low Tension Flats)
FGN (Fujigen) J-Standard
Sandberg California II TT4

The Capo preamp is awesome and the DI is nice and clean although I prefer using a Radial JDI for that. The Motown sounds great but it’s a lot of money for something that sounds very similar to the Radial to me although I would buy one if I had the funds!

Nice thorough side by side. Helpful. Thank you. Was surprised at how well the Capo "cleaned up". Have heard bunches of clips of it sounding great in a grindy overdriven mode but this made a case for it's versatility. The BAE was so smooth and fat. Was def my personal fav though only going to do that one thing. The Motown was nice but a bit underwhelming for me.

Thanks - yes the Capo is so versatile because you can control the character of the saturation when using the preamp but the clean DI is also fantastic. I use the Capo on my pedal board. The BAE sits on my desk so it’s super handy to just plug and play/record. I tend to use the Motown mainly when I’m recording a bass with flats on it - it sounds the best for that in my opinion but expensive for what it is. I don’t think you can beat the Capo for versatility and value for money to be honest.

My current preference is to use the Motown DI for any bass with flats and use the CAPO wet side into the BAE for everything else.
