Never be afraid to practice with a bass that isn't plugged in. After all, you're practicing a technique here, not trying to get a specific tone out of your setup. Go for it!

When double thumbing you can't use the thumb to stop E or A strings from ringing while playing D and G strings. Technically it's wrong: proper position of the left hand would be with your thumb behind the neck, as you were doing when you posted this comment, although at the beginning it feels awkward it really helps when you start building speed, it puts less strain on your wrist and prevents you from accidentally muting the other strings while playing. That said, most players who slap do it, once again, not to have the lower strings resonating and because it gives you more control over the strings, but it's not the proper way. I've seen many people slapping with their thumb behind the neck and muting the strings with the right hand, it takes longer to learn but also pays off in the long run. Keep it classical ;)

it’s anatomically better for your wrist to not bend it, so pointing the thumb towards the headstock/having it over the neck tends to be more comfortable

Typically ones without too narrow of string spacing

I think certain thumbs are better for the double thumb technique

Try adjusting your strap. The height of your bass/guitar can completely change the feel.

If you think about it, it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible and very inefficient to do the upstroke with the thumb using traditional slap technique where the forearm rotates and the thumb bouces off the string. So, yes, its a different motion and good observation. IMO, double thumbing is closer to playing (alternate strokes) with a pick than it is to typical slap playing.
