I have done alot of testing over the years on weather or not seald or passive radiator enclosure is better. In my opinion it comes down to application. I feel that the drivers and radiators used in this video made this test inclusive. Even though you can hear a slight difference. In my test ive noticed that the passive radiator is more affective in the lower notes. I used a frequency sweep from 90hz down to 30hz and could see that on the higher bass notes the subwoofer driver I was using had more excursion. On the lower bass notes the passive radiator had more excursion. Indicating that passive radiators work best with subwoofer drivers in the lower frequencies. Full range 6×9 coaxial speakers sound and perform best in sealed enclosures with the bottom end crossed off between 50hz-100hz. Depending on the quality of the driver. Subwoofers are designed to take the load off from your midbass drivers and play only the low notes. May I add that you can also tune a passive radiator by adding various amounts of weight. The radiators in this video seemed tuned a bit high. In my opinion it doesn't really make sense adding passive radiator/s to a driver/s thats not going to play very low notes. You will achieve higher fidelity with full range drivers in a proper tuned sealed enclosure. You can use a passive radiator/s with your subwoofer/s if you are tight on space. Its hard to beat a quality ported enclosure for a subwoofer though. Im still testing and figuring out weather or not passive radiators are better than ported. Passive radiator enclosures do eliminate port turbulence. Commonly heard in ported enclosures. So thats a plus. Sorry for the long comment.

On 50 hz there is definitely more bass but on lower there is not much increase i m using headphones so dont complain anyone

You need to up the size of the passive radiators for the driver. You want to be between 1.5x-2x more SD on the passive. I've had decent results at 1.25 more but generally I try to get closer to 2x more for my subs. So for a single 10" driver I could run 2 10" passives to make it an easy 2x larger

I've always preferred sealed to ported or anything else. It doesn't matter if porting makes it louder at low frequencies. Tightly-sealed boxes always sound better to my ear... clearer without need to mess with equalizers.

Yeah, there is slightly more base on the higher frequencies, but it tapers off lower down. I also noticed a slight increase in treble response, dunno why. But I think the reason why the difference was so slight is because even with the bass radiators, it's still technically a sealed speaker unit with no air flow. As the Speaker moves outward, the base radiators move inwards and vice versa. There is no airflow to maximize excursion as it fights the vacuum inside the sealed box. The radiators only add a slight relief because they move inwards and allow the speaker diaphragm to extend farther than it normally would with the fully wooden cabinet.

In my opinion the lower the frequency (0-80hz) Ported enclosures will win hands down. Then low to mid frequency (40 - 120hz) Passive radiators are excellent. And last but not least are the sealed enclosures who don't get as low (usually) but have a much tighter punchy sound sound through the (50 - 150hz ish) Just my 2p worth 👍😁

Try this. On that box use a 1 1/4 PVC pipe. The larger the pipe diameter the longer the port length will have to be to have the same effect. Considering The net box volume will be .20 ft3 you dont have alot of length to work with. Use of a smaller port diameter is recommended. Longer the port length the lower the tuning frequency. Despite the FS of the speaker I usually aim for around 35hz. I am going to assume the length will be about 9 to 10 inches to get the desired effect. Bass heads say box is everything, but port tune is the key to getting your box to sound awesome. You seem like a smart guy so may know all this already.

I think if we put a slot port over the radiators on the back of the box opening at front and tune the radiators to a low frequency the result should be an all-rounder ported box.The radiators will block higher frequencies to enter the port and the spl will not be wasted while lower frequencies will be passed through port and amplified. What do you think?

I DO hear a 'meatier' sound in the lower frequencies. You need at least the same passive radiator area as the speaker itself though, maybe even up to two times the area to make it work really good and to take the strain off the passive radiators. Use a blown speaker as a passive radiator if you have one.. Fun experiment!

The bass radiator is best fitted on both sides of the enclosure to reduce the overall vibration on the enclosure. also the ones you used is relatively smaller than the main driver that is why it sounds like there's no sound diff. at all or just very little diff.

Fli audio had a very slight high freq. Boost after the modification I think.

The bass radiators certainly add a slightly fuller sound, but on my end it sounds more mid-support. And it really is ever so slight.

hi, bass radiator dose work. its tricky when its actually tune properly. it matters the size of the encloser and the location. the speaker itself also can in impacted - mostly for those drive that are hyper that works great with bass radiator since the damping effect really smooth it out. its must be engineer tune. its not like one of those speaker where you can just slap it on and make it happen.

The stage feels more wide with the 'after' part. AND it might not affect the lower portions so much but it might be adding more sound to mid-lows, i.e. the continuous beat sounds louder rather than the bass.

The radiators go on either side spreading the depth of sound.

For everyone spouting off about passive radiators please do a little homework before leaving ridiculous comments here. The cone area and moving Mass of the driver and the radiator need to be similar, then you add or remove mass from the radiator to tune it to a specific frequency. There are some other factors but this is the most basic jist of it. Since the radiators here have far less cone area and far less weight than the active driver, they will likely resonate at a much higher frequency than the fs of the active driver. Hence no measurable or audible difference in the 30-50hz range that was focused on in this test. They are basically just flopping around wasting the amplifier power and possibly allowing a bit more cone excursion since the box is no longer technically sealed.

A properly designed PR setup should have a very noticeable sound difference. I don't think those 6x9's have enough xmax to really benefit from passive radiators.

I feel like those might over work the speaker if its not designed to drive passive radiators.

I somehow made a ported passive radiator by tuning the radiator lower than the ported box (26hz for the radiator, 30 for the box). It has better response than two subs in the same box

Try more passives. I experiment with similar builds but the radiators has to total twice the area of the speaker cone area for proper results.

This is called the “Passive Emitter” design. Very old type of acoustic design.

The best sort of bass radiator is one that is identical to the speaker with power to it. Plus, square speakers aren’t really the ideal bass reflex output. It’s square so it has inherent limitations right from the start.

The reason its not working is because the radiators have no cones, the cone is what pushes the lower frequencies. those are flat so they can't excite the wave.

When filming the excursion please film more from the side, like when you showed the bass radiators I think we would have seen a lot more if we got to look at them from an angle instead of from the back almost. Ty for your time

It's more punchier with the bass rad, but pretty much same sounding. I'm using a headphones.

sounds practically the same, also hard to judge with the changing bass. if I have to guess, the radiators feels like producing a slightly lower bass. maybe that explains why bass radiators so popular with portable bluetooth speakers, lower bass despite compact sizes.

I like bass port all the way coz bass when go through this ports you can hear the bass as splash in the air and deeper than passive radiators.

Your bass radiator should be as large as the cutout of the carpet but you would need two to effectively make lower bass!

I think you would need larger radiators to make a real difference.

At the higher base notes there was more difference than at the lower frequencys, witch tells us that the bass radiators are tuned to high. Try to add 2 X 15 gram washers to the inside of each base radiator and try it again. If that doesn't help doable the amount of washers. and a quick question. are the bass radiators at there exursion limits ?

Small radiators for increases in high-range bass. Large radiators for increases in low-range bass. I bet those radiators made a day and night difference in the 55-80hz range.

Just wanted to let you know I watch this video in my 2003 Lincoln Town Car it has a pretty good audio system and I can definitely hear a difference especially in the first base note easily made a difference just wanted to let you know
