Love this song! The original Doobie Brothers was so great, a real feel good song, as you said. But Home Free's cover makes it uniquely their own! Austin is brilliant, as is Adam - vocal percussionist extraordinaire! I've already watched the video several times but it never gets old! Thanks Peter! Another great reaction and analysis!

Peter remember Chance can take a lower note with Chance on that intro, so it's probably coming from Chance. Peter the original; came out in the Summer of 1972. This has in short term, become a top 5 Home Free cover....how can you not chair-dance to this....its such a bop 7 feel good song

It came out in 1972, the summer I got my driver's license. Talk about your formative years. That effect you talk about reminds me of something old Bluegrass performers used to do by running a pick down the teeth of a metal comb. Also, I believe Adam Rupp is doing most if not all of those high-note fillers - you can see him singing the high part in the slow bridge.

This is simply excellent again!! I have been a fan of the Doobie Brothers for a long time. This song is just timeless. It still swings. Really something for Home Free. So great sung, so great harmonies, bone-feeling bass, But for me it's Adam who makes it truly phenomenal. He nailed it. The vocal percussion is just inhumane. So unbelievably good. For me the very best beatboxer/vocal percussionist/mouth artist there is.And the vocal he plays like that high note, I think it shows that he must have a great singing voice And I haven't even mentioned his appearance yet. He's so handsome. I do like that he has his hair a bit longer again and then with that bandana on.🥰 I love it, I love Home Free💖

Thanks for your analysis. I grew up on classic rock & am a big fan of the Doobie Brothers & had their albums. "Listen To The Music" was a big hit for them back in 1972. Love that Home Free is keeping this great music alive & introducing it to the younger generation. The guys did a really nice job of this song. Austin was great for the lead & loved the background harmonies of Rob, Chance & Tim's bass. Adam killed it on the vocal percussion again. He always comes up with some new & interesting sounds. Adam is doing the high notes as you can see in the slowed down section.

Love your analysis! By the way, I can make that weird Adam noise he did near the beginning & I'm a "mature" woman!😊 It's kind of the way I used to do my Donald Duck voice between my back teeth & cheek! The Doobie Brothers' version was released in 1972 so this is a 50th anniversary release. 17:30 it almost sounds like a flanger on Austin's voice, which at the right settings would account for both the hi-cut filtering of his voice and the "shifting" or "bouncing" effect. A lot of the EQ effects they're doing does sound like they're trying to be somewhat reminiscent of AM radio as well.

No crazy super-low first octave bass from Tim, and yet it still sounds so solid and full. People are quick to dismiss anything that isn’t lower than an A1, but a great bass voice on a powerful, resonant G2 - C2 can go a long way to laying a solid foundation. Nice react! Can’t wait for the upcoming Bass Gang content!

So when they've got doo doos and harmonies, I don't have a good enough ear to see if that's what they're doing here, but live they have a loop station, Adam is it's master, and it gets a lot of use. Tim has a funny intro about how he doesn't get to use it, just Adam, Rob, and Austin.

Watching your reaction (again) and that sound Adam makes is a Beistle (I think). It's an old time metal noisemaker with a handle and when you spin it makes a ratchet sound. We had those when I was in grade school. The music teacher used them to teach us to keep time and together on a song. It was actually pretty cool.

Thanks, Peter, for a lovely, in-depth reaction. I appreciate your insights. In his article on understanding subharmonic bass, Rex Trulove said, "A subharmonic bass is a method of singing much lower than your normal vocal range." Rex went on to say, "I’ve shared several videos of someone who has mastered the technique, though; Tim Foust. It is subharmonic singing that allows him to hit the really, really low notes." If you're interested, Range Planet has Tim's range as B0-A5. I have seen videos, however, where he's been "clocked" as low as G0. Is there a negative scale, too?

I think the term you're looking for with Adam's sfx (and I could be wrong) is a "flutter tongue." It's like a rolled Spanish "rr," but without trying to say a letter. I'm a clarinet player, and I sometimes had to do that with modern nontonal music (which is funny, because my clarinet professor couldn't do it).

Tim is doing subharmonic while chance is bouncing from regular bass to baritone. Rob is singing lead in the chorus Austin on the verses & bridge. They're all throwing notes all over the place! 🤪 Crazy Good! BTW - The "do-doos" are all the way thru the original. And the way they are giving the voices that kinda wavy sound is the way Dobie Brothers sang/recorded it. Kind of a dream or "high" feeling sound. Dobie wasn't their real names, I'm sure you know. But they came by it honestly. 😉

Thanks for a surprisingly diverse number of uses for trekking poles. One idea that came to me as you were passing the cornfield was to tape a small (e.g., shaving) mirror at a 45 degree angle from the outer edge of the snow guard to the pole. By raising it up you can use it as a simple periscope to look over obstacles. You could also use that to signal others by shining a flashlight on the mirror as it points in the desired direction.
