➡️ I consider TesseracT to be one of the most unique-sounding bands in the modern metal scene, and a large part of that comes from the heartbeat-like bass grooves from Amos Williams. After discovering this group in 2010, and falling in love, I later had the privilege to support them on tour a few years later. As the years went on, I admittedly missed out on a few of their latest releases, and today I'm hearing "Juno" from their 2018 release "Sonder" for the first time. In this video, I watch Amos effortlessly crush through this epic track and break down his slap bass techniques and writing approach, how his thumb technique slowly evolves through the song with more intensity (to double-thump), his incredible fretting-hand efficiency, his subtle use of muting during slap lines, and plenty of commentary on how TesseracT are the kings of dynamics and atmosphere in their brilliant compositions.

Absolutely one of my favorite newer bands! Love his tone for sure and all of their albums. Another similar band I love is The Contortionist from my hometown of Indianapolis, IN. Jordan Eberhardt is another bass player that is great in this genre!

Oh man, absolutely. I saw The Contortionist live in 2012 just before Jonathan left the band and they were incredible. It was before Jordan joined the band but Chris was flawless, they all were actually. I was obsessed with Exoplanet and Intrinsic, such amazing songwriting.

Thanks so much! I actually refrained from commenting on the bass because I had no idea what it was and didn’t want to start guessing 😅 - didn’t really look familiar while watching. I’ll look those up… EDIT: KINDA thought it was an Ibanez sorta headstock, but I’ve truly never seen this model before. Interesting!!

Two of my favourite bass players at the mo are named Amos! Williams and Heller. Anyway - he makes it look so easy but I have smallish hands and the stretches are KILLER! I've really gotta pick and choose which riffs to learn 😂😅. So glad I got to see these guys live, in my top 3 for sure!

I'm seeing these guys for the third time live in January, cannot wait! Amos has been my favourite bassist for a long time. Everything he does just fits the music perfectly, nothing that doesn't need to be there is included. His playthrough of April off their first album is such a good watch. His right-hand work is immaculate in that track with these muted strums and popping. Plus it's just a beautiful song!

Amos is incredible. I got into Tesseract around the time they released One and he has remained one of my favorite bass players. I know it feels pretentious as fuck to use this adjective, but his playing is so... "elegant". I got the same old Warwick Corvette model he used to play way back then recently, been loving that bass so so so much. I might just sell all my guitars and focus on bass at this point haha. Can't wait to see Tesseract in early 2024 :)

I saw y'all on that tour! At the Pawn Shop in Edmonton, Alberta with Anciients. I remember you almost weren't able to play due to some technical issues, and Tesseract was super late because they were held up by wildlife on the highway from Jasper. Despite all of that, it was an awesome show! All the bands looked really happy to be there. Fun sidenote: that was also the show I forgot my earplugs and ended up getting tinnitus lol. Worth it!

Wow!! Love it! I vaaaaaguely remember that show now that you mentioned the wildlife (😅), but don’t recall the technical issues. Wonder if it was my amp? I did have some issues with it the following tour with Kindo a month later. Dang man, protect those ears. Hope you still aren’t dealing with that these days from that show 🙁

It's interesting how he switches from slapping from the top of the strings to slapping through the strings. He does both techniques in the same riff. He might even have done it differently in separate takes when they were shooting the video and the editing makes him look like he is switching during the riff, I'm not sure. Myself I was using both techniques in different situations, and I am trying to re-learn my riffs using only the thumb-through technique. But I am not sure if it is worth it, maybe I should just continue to use both.
