The range of a bass trombone is between 10 and 12 yards depending upon your throwing strength.

as a new bass trombonist and someone who composes for fun and dealing with stress, this video helped a lot with understanding the limits of the bass, keep up the good work man.

Nice video. I played bass trombone professionally from 1974-2010. I used a Reynolds Contempora until 1976 and then a King Duo Gravis (6B) for the rest of my career (yes, I am a dinosaur). Pedal F to G above the staff was my comfortable register/range. I used the "pivot system" and did have two different shift points. My college professor did me a great favor and did not let me concentrate on those notes in the "gutter." I did not get to do a bass trombone etude my whole freshman year. Even in my Junior recital, I did the Hindemith Sonata for trombone on the bass trombone. Tuba solo literature was my main source of solo literature as good bass trombone literature in the 70's was scarce and still a novelty. I used the Remington daily warmup for trombone and extended it downward (as well as adding a few things I picked up from jazz player's articles out of Downbeat magazine). I loved Tommy Pederson's etudes for bass trombone and will say that I mastered them. I've never composed anything for bass trombone, but I did a few arrangements for the trombone choir (doing concert band arrangements was much easier). Thanks for the video!

Yes I started playing bass like halfway through my sophomore year I started out by using my schools Bach 50B20, I ended up in my senior year getting my own and I just liked the Bach 50 so much that I ended up getting a 50B3

This is a great video! Helped me out with an orchestra piece I’m working on. I needed to know how long I can go to get the “brown note”

Wonderful resource. Thank you so much for taking the time to delve deeply into the bass trombone! Also, completely unrelated, but what is that funky looking monster art above you on the bookshelf? Has the sort of orange and blue background. Thanks!

Hey thank you!! That is this amazing print I won in a raffle!! I didn't know at the time, but I actually knew the artist when we were young and had fallen out of touch. So when I saw the name it was a total shock!! I love her work so much, her name is Magge Gagliardi. www.maggegagliardi.com/

Ay I'm a junior in high-school this year and I'm gonna get and after school job after all marching season is done. I'm not sure if I should purchase a bass trombone. I played a single trigger my sophomore year and really liked it my sectional leader got to play it this year so I'm on tenor trombone and baritone but I want to get back to bass bone it just makes football games so fun and loud. What would you recommend and what model?

Cool!! Well I'd say talk with your band director first to make sure that they are okay with you playing the bass trombone. If they say okay, then go for it. As for what kinds of horns to look for, it really depends on your budget. You'd probably like to check out some, Getzen, Bach, Yamaha, Holton, or something like that. There are tons of great bass trombones by those brands. The first horn I ever owned was a Holton Tr-181. It got me well into college. Getzen has some customization options so that can be really cool too. Let me know if you start to look at horns, and I'd be happy to talk about what you find!
