Sick of struggling to play Hysteria? This step-by-step lesson will take you to the finish line and level-up your overall playing.
Get the full Hysteria bass tab + sheet music: www.noteflight.com/scores/vie...
There’s a moment in every bassist’s life when we decide we want to learn Hysteria - but why do we struggle with it so much?
In this lesson I’ve broken the Hysteria bass riff into mini step-by-step challenges, so by the end of this video you can glue them all together and legit play the whole riff.
The first couple challenges will focus on your plucking speed and endurance, which is the engine that drives the Hysteria train. (okay, enough of that analogy)
Then we’ll go through some of the easier fretting pieces, training up on the “open string bounce,” followed by some of the gnarlier notes with plenty of fretting advice.
Getting the Hysteria bass tone is half the fun of playing this tune, so our final challenges will cover how to do a decent Wolstenholme impression.
Then we’ll wrap it all up, playing the challenges in sequence until we get to the final form of the riff. (and don’t miss the secret boss level at the very end)
Don’t get hysterical - subscribe here so you don’t pull your hair out when you miss the next video: yeah.bassbuzz.com/subscribe

@@fapking9033 I would agree with your opinion to some extent. It is undeniable that for someone on the internet, Davie was able to succeed in influencing the name of bass guitar in a manner which was more easily acceptable for people. He combined bass playing with satire and jokes, so he was able to reach out to a great number netizens. His fiverr series, _______ meets bass and what not. But tbh, he's really not the same kind of Davie he was before. Nowadays he's more about Reddit reviews, and significantly less about bass playing in his videos.

I think one of the most important things to remember about this riff is that you should start with your middle finger on your plucking hand. If you start with index, bar 2 will screw you during the last 6 notes and put you in an awkward position for the rest of the bars. Start with your middle finger!

I'm playing bass since about one year. In the beginning just a bit for fun, but after I broke my right foot and couldn't drum for a while, so I started exercising seriously. When I saw the bass line for Hysteria for the first time, I thought I'd never ever be able to play this song. Then I found your tutorial, dared myself to start - and after the first day I'm at challenge 3. Your way of teaching bass and motivating people to play even those songs that seem unplayable is incredible. Thank you so much for this great inspiration - now I believe that in a few weeks or months I'll be able to play this song.

Thanks so much, Josh. This really helped me break this down Hysteria into manageable pieces. One thing that really stuck with me is your direction to figure out the fingering and stick with it. I have this habit of being so excited to hear myself play something that I go too fast and keep changing the fingering on my fretting hand. Then, it takes me forever to learn a challenging song. I’ve now taken your advice to slow down and figure out the fingering first before I increase speed. Love your videos:)

This video is actually helping me identify where all my tone issues are coming from. My Sterling Stingray bass is a 4 string active bass, and recently changing the battery allowed the tone nob to work and cover the nasty clacking sound I've been getting. My five string PDB bass is passive, and so not only has a tone of more resonance on the B string, but is harder to get the same fuller tone I get on the four string. I've played a series of 16th notes on the A string on both, same amp settings (I have a Fender Rumble 40), and there is a noticeable difference. More to this song specifically, I've already gotten quite comfortable with 16th notes, so my challenge is to keep my fingers from flying off the string when I'm shifting. I tend to "jump" between two or three fingers, and with dyspraxia, it's harder for me to control my fingers individually. That is something I can work on, but as you said in the video, I'm already half way there (woah-oh!).

Damn, this is definitely the best guide on Hysteria (and maybe Bass playing as well) I have seen so far! Breaking this apart is so important. Usually the "how to play" vids are like "Here are the tabs, now watch me fucking shred these 16th notes for the next few minutes... Lol! Easy, isn't it?" meanwhile thousands of young (and old) people in front of the screen putting their Bass back into the case and leaving it there for weeks, months it even years.

Great video - thanks Josh. Can I just say that breaking it down and building up gradually is very important. As well as not being very productive, diving straight in on a song like this could lead to injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. Once you’ve had these problems they never fully go away (believe me, I know)! It’s also a good idea to warm up first. Any videos on warm up and stretching exercises Josh?

Hysteria was one of the first Muse bass lines I learned when I first started playing bass in high school (I was the bassist in our school band, which was pretty fun) and I still love the song to this day (my go-to distorted tone is my Boss OD-1X or my EXH Big Muff Pi, both of which get pretty close imo), it’s definitely a great tool for learning the different techniques that Josh talked about and a great gateway in terms of learning about playing with a heavier-sounding bass tone (Also not gonna lie, the single note renditions sounded really damn cool with the actual song behind it)

Really great job with this tutorial! Break down to pieces and slow the tempo down. And how you explain it is really good and easy to understand. I can also recommend on this point the Anytune app! This is a fantastic practising tool where you can slow down with same tone, set loop points easily and much more things like eq-ing, filtering, transposing and save all that for the next session. Damn this helped me a lot! Works on iOS and Android. There’s a decent free version. And the pro is cheap and you pay only once, no monthly subscription ;)

Another challenging and cool riff is "Down Rodeo" from RATM. When I was younger I thought Timmy C's bass riffs were simple, while it's quite the opposite, and by studying his style and blending with mine (plus making a plethora of mistakes) I realized that yes, those riffs will always be remembered as in your face ones!
