When it comes to bass fishing, one of the greatest lures every made is a jig! It caches fish in shallow water and deep water, it can be fished in clear water and muddy water, it works in the dead of summer and the cold of winter.
However, when I talk about jigs, I often hear people say that they have 0 confidence in a jig...so in this video I break down the 5 most important tips about fishing a jig that can help you go from 0 confidence to slaying bass with a jig!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

That's why I've always believed in live bait but I've even used earthworms nightcrawlers out there and didn't even catch a bluegill. You're supposed to cast those out in the side of sit, not even live baits are biting

Awesome video. I used to struggle with a jig but now it stays on the deck of my boat and I am a primarily dominant jig fisherman. It stays in my hand. People overthink fishing a jig. Fish it like you fish a shaky head starting out. Drag it very very slow. If you see a bass on livescope. Drop it on its head. If it’s bass it will follow it to the bottom or catch it on the fall. Other than that if they don’t bite immediately drag it very slowly. That’s the key just slow down. Once you get confident then try hopping a jig and skipping docks etc. for starters just find some rock bank with a ballhead jig and a zoom creepy crawler greenpumpkin for both and go to town.

Great video !! This is probably the best jig video. I learned how to cast with the bitsy bug. For me the 1/4oz was perfect weight to learn on and they’re relatively inexpensive. I caught a fish on my first non backlashed cast and been fishing jigs since. I learned of BOSS jigs from another one of your videos. So now with BOSS and skirting material, i make my own skirts. I like green pumpkin / brown, amber pumpkin/ purple, and and white. Boss has allowed me to keep a box full of finesse, swim, and archy heads. I’ve added two picasso jigs to my box lately because they track a bit better in open water settings. I like the BBB yo daddy as a trailer, covers all basis for me. Can swim it, flip it or cut the claws for a 3” stick bait look. When I got a new lake I bring one rod and the boss swim jig head. Allows me to cover water quickly and to pitch to cover.

Thanx Tyler. Jig bites are not always felt. I was fishing a grass line years ago and boated 2 or 3 bass out of there. Thought I had grass on my jig and reeled in to find a 3lber just had the jig in his mouth and never moved a fin. Tryed a quick hook set and missed. That shook my jig confidence for the rest of the year. Set the hook more. If you already set the hook alot set it even more. Best jig tip!

At 60 years old I've come to realize patience and persistence pays off when jig fishing. Have been using the Bitsy Flip with and without a chunk trailer for years. Buy them by the handful at Walmart because here in South Louisiana you will get them hung up pitchin' into the good stuff! To be honest, they are about the only jig I use anymore. Years ago when I quit tournament fishing is when I really started enjoying the sport so much more and after over 50 years of dedicated fishing...I still LOVE IT!!

I was trying to teach a young angler on how to fish a jig years ago. I told him to just have patience and keep working it. Just about every time I turned around, he was back to throwing what he was confrontable fishing with. This young angler displayed no patience to keep fishing with the jig. I decided to take every rod from his reach except that jig rod setup, and made him fish with it until he caught his first fish. This young angler happened to be my son. The more he fished with a jig the better he got on catching fish with it. Tell this day, he always has a jig rigged up when we fish together.

Great video, as always, and as a newer bass angler, I can honestly say I have learned so much from your videos. It's funny you posted this video now as I actually just caught my first bass on a jig yesterday (black & blue flipping w/green pumpkin rage craw). It wasn't my pb, but it was a 3.5 pounder, which is large for my area (deep south Louisiana). I will be getting some of your merch soon, but had a question about your sun gloves, which is, do they hold up well in the cold as I'm looking for some good cold weather gloves.

While I do love them and have probably 100 of them, deep water and a Bitsy Bug don't mix so well. So start pretty shallow. Be slow and be patient. Feel and pay attention to the bottom composition as you drag your jig along, that will tell you what's down there. Especially from the bank, this can almost be as good as a sonar unit. Don't get cutesy with it; 4 colors is all you need at most - white, black (Or black/blue), green, and brown. Those will catch fish in 100% of the fisheries that have bass. And above all - stick with it!

The number 1 thing I wish KZfaqrs would say during their videos is, “Get your a** out there and fish!” I meet so many people that say they fish and then admit they only fished 8 times last year. GO FISHING!! Fish and fail so many times that you want to cry throw all your gear overboard. Then go fishing again the next day.

I have caught Cod, Mackrell, Salmon, Grayling, Pike, Trout, Perch... almost all species I have tried to catch (and few other), in everything from 120m deep water next to a wreck outside coast of northern Norway to 20cm (8") deep creek rapid or 50m deep frozen mountain lake in northern Sweden. just change the size type and Collour and adapt technique slightly and you are reasonably likely to get something. also expect surprises, I have had perch bite a 150mm (6") intended for pike and a large trout (just under 5kg) bite a 40mm grub I was using fishing for grayling in a shallow stretch of a river using UL gear, one of my most memorable fishing moments.

Funny you just made this video. I just got off the lake and the only thing they’d bite was a green pumpkin swim jig with a craw style trailer. It was all off shore in 40-50 ft of water and I watched them on live scope ignore are just follow swim baits, lipless and deep dive cranks, drop shot worm and minnow and a A-Rig. Dropped in the jig and it was like flipping a switch on. Great video thanks.

I think the biggest tip for recognizing a bite for a jig, and you indirectly mentioned this in the video, is WATCH YOUR LINE. A majority of my jig bites, I'm fishing cover and just feel weight. I look where my line enters the water and if it's moving I set the hook. I can't tell you how many fish I've caught on a jig that way.

I never was a let the bait soak or dead stick the bait fisherman. Was fishing yesterday and getting skunked. I decided to cast, let the lure sink, let it sit for a short while and then start working it. Next time I stopped the bait, I shook it a couple of times and let it sit. It's cold so I know they're not aggressive. Just letting the bait sit there for a while I got bit! Wholly crap, dead sticking works, especially in cold water! Nice 4 pounder on a Ned rig.

I think the biggest factor with lack of jig success actually comes well before any attempt. I avoided jigs for YEARS…like, decades almost. It just seemed like too much…this head style, that trailer, the weights and colors…for whatever reason, it seemed like “a bait the pros use”. Then during one of my week-long summer trips I decided I was only going to throw a jig until I caught something. Picked up an unremarkable jig and a trailer that appealed to me, got out onto the water, tossed it under the first dock I pulled up to, noticed my line was moving to the *side* for some reason, set the hook and landed a fish ON THE FIRST CAST. It was completely ridiculous…all these years of avoiding jigs for what? Fast forward to now, I tie my own jigs and have several dedicated, high end setups. Breaking the ice and realizing, on a personal level, that jigs aren’t mysterious and weird is the first step. My experience was a fluke and a stroke of good luck since the jig bite was apparently on fire that day. But whatever the bait…jigs, frogs, jerkbaits…if you just say “right, I’m only gonna fish these until I get something” (with frogs, you might wanna wait until the bluegill spawn lol), you’re doing yourself a HUGE favor and expanding your horizons.

I guess you could say that i fall under the category of fishermen that lack confidence in Jig fishing. I know they are a phenominal bait and a proven bait. Being here in Florida, i want to get more confident with a Jig, but just can't discipline myself to just pick it up and throw it. I watch videos and stuff but i lack in the WHERES & WHENS, to throw one. I have done my frontyard seminar with pitching it into a 5 Gal bucket and etc, but in my opinion, its ALOT different when pitching a jig, when on the ground/level area as opposed to from the front deck of my boat. Tyler, if you could help me out a bit and maybe give me a couple scenarios here in florida, i would greatly appreciate it.

A good rule of thumb for starting off is to try using a jig wherever you would normally throw a texas rig. The way you fish a jig is very similar to how you would a Texas rig. The only difference is that jigs give a much bulkier and flashier presentation. And it's that extra flare that gets you the bite when a standard texas rig might not. Trust me, once you get your first Jig fish, something just clicks, and It's like you can't put it down.

Want to learn a new bait... take only that bait out of the box and fish it for weeks, in every condition and evey location. Back in the early 80's, there wasn't any internet to watch, bass fishing was still coming on. BASS wasn't even on the West Coast yet.. you just fished that bait everywhere until you were consistently catching fish with it. Nobody shared the "secret", you just had to learn by fishing it. Winners were asked how they caught thier fish... often lied about the type lure or technique, the following week may have been another tournament on that same lake.... but that last tip, weld that lure to your hand. TRUE! Those become the go-to bait.

Can't really fish a jig at the lake I fish at since there is a bunch of weeds that are the slimy kind.

@@alexkaalberg1969yes, I've had good luck with white swim jig with a 3.3 Keitech paddle tail trailer. That should help slow the Sink and the action will displace some water so the fish can find it in muddy/stained conditions.

What do you do if you're fishing a tidal river and the bottom is that mucky mud nonsense? I swear even a 3/8oz jig is impossible to use because you feel that damn suction every time you go to hop it. Makes me think the lure is actually settling down in the mud, no way a bass finds it.

Hi, I'm curious and don't mean this as negative at all but a learning moment for me. We're or are you a pro fisherman turned you tube marketer. Or are you just a pure you tube marketer who likes to fish? I only ask because many young kids want to pro fish but I think there is much more money in you tube channels and fishing clothes. Thought?

I was never a “pro” in my mind. Fished the Bassmaster Opens for about 6 years and have fished tournaments since I was 15. There is money in both but they are both hard careers at the same time. If you want to be a pro these days…you definitely need to understand social media

Dude it's frustrating I went fishing again at the pond in my neighborhood today didn't get one bite. Use a purple rubber worm which I've caught bass within the past but then I changed it to another rubber bait then I put a jerkbait on there different kinds didn't catch nothing no bites nothing and I am using the same technique that you're using and everybody else does and are not biting and it's very very frustrating the watch these videos are people are getting all these bites and I get none and I'm doing the same thing you are I'm rigging them up the same way, it's very very very very frustrating when I'm doing it the same way you guys are. Swimbaits jerkbaits whatever you call them I'm not getting bites on those either , it's annoying I can see a bass this morning in the shallow water and I had my bait go right by it and it didn't even mess with it

If you see the Bass, they most likely see you. Try very early in the morning. Get there before the sun comes up.
