I go back and fourth between my new AG700 bass head and my tried-and-true ToneHammer 500

I'm a bassist who plays four string Fenders only. Most with flatwound strings. I had been previously playing through all tube bass amps for many years. For me and my style the Tonehammer 500 is THE amp to go to if you are making a transition from tubes to solid state. The TH500 on top of two SL112 cabs is perfect for fat, warm vintage type bass tone. BTW, The TH500 combined with both 1x12 cabs actually weighs LESS than my old Ampeg head alone. HA!

Bassius, I noticed on one of your other videos about your wife's idea about more basses for your PhD. I guess you do know what you are doing. I promised my wife a BMW Z3 for her's. That was 15 years ago. After 2 MSs she is getting close to starting her dissertation. I'm just an amateur, but one of my grandsons may have a future as a professional. 8 instruments by 14: strings, woodwinds, horns, keys. I try to get him to concentrate on one & he tells me he sees Marcus Miller playing bass guitar & bass clarinet on KZfaq. His teachers keep talking a future as a composer. I really enjoy your videos.

Very helpful comparison - thanks and kudos on your bassmanship. I was planning to get a TH, but I'm starting to think the AG offers more tonal variety, including greater clarity, while still enabling the classic thick tones of the TH. Would that be your assessment?

Good video... I have the tone hammer 350 and it is impressive . I am running 2 db 112's and have been contemplating the ag 700. This video pretty well gets me over the line with decision ...

IMO the AG700 has a much warmer tone. I purchased a TH500 a few years ago and it sound terrible with my Berg HT112 cabinet (only head that I've ever experienced that with the Berg). It sounded very nasal and harsh. Based on your video I'd say that's just the voice of the amp (even though it sounds better with your Aggie cabs).

Hi Denson! Good video comparison, thanks for sharing! I just bought the AG700 and I'm a bit disturbed by the fan noise when I play late at night (trying to let the family sleep in peace). Is it the same noise level with the ToneHammer 500?

Judged from this vid, the th500 sounds way to thick but I do realize and respect the fact that the camera mic isn't doing any justice to thick sounding amps. They all sound like garbage if recorded with a camera. Usually the thickness of the bass sound works great for me in a live setting or as a bass player in general, but I usually tend to miss the top end and presence in most of them (I just happen to play in a summer resort in croatia at the moment and am playing through a houses Fender Rumble 200 and this is exactly the problem). Anyhow, I am probably going to swap my EBS Fafner for the AG500DC, can't wait.

don't own either. i use a heritage ampeg B15. just from listening to your samples i enjoy both but prefer the ag700. i'm sure that the ag700 routed cab touching the floor has to do with it too. don't you wish the low knobs were 80hz or at least 60hz instead of 40hz? i deal with this on my B15. good idea using TH for upright. thanks for sharing.

@zechariahfrink3707
@zechariahfrink3707 7 жыл бұрын
I mainly use and endorse Dean Markley SR2000 strings. They're taper wound over the saddles and they have a very open sound that I don't find in any string. They're a little looser in tension so you can get in a more "normal gauge sets the easier playability of a lighter gauge string but still have a thicker tone. I do like the Fodera strings a lot too though. They make a VERY high quality string that blows most of the main competition out of the water in my humble opinion.

Very nice Denson ! Do you use a pair of SL 112's with the AG700? Isn't it to much power for them?
@dr_bassius
@dr_bassius 7 жыл бұрын
Miguel Navarro de Castro so it's all about managing your rms handling and ohm rating. at max power the ag has an output rating of 700w at 4 ohms. two sl112 cabs are rated at 500w at 4 ohms. so, there is more power than they can handle (at maximum) but having that head room will provide strong, clean power to reach maximum volume. you have to be careful, but once you have the experience, that much headroom is awesome.
@mnavarrocastro
@mnavarrocastro 7 жыл бұрын
A type of headroom you couldn't get with de TH500?
@dr_bassius
@dr_bassius 7 жыл бұрын
Miguel Navarro de Castro correct. the TH is rated at 500w @ 4 ohms. two Sl112, and it's at the limit. it's great, sounds good, nice and loud, but it can be a bit dirty. I love it though. I have a db751 too, way more power than I need, but clean and strong with the two cabs.
@mnavarrocastro

Just got a Black Friday, offer I couldn't refuse deal on a 4 ohm DB410 cab and an AG 700 last week. Still fiddling around with it to find the best it has to offer. So far, I am somewhat underwhelmed considering the dough I still had to layout, despite the deal of the century the dude told me I was getting. My go to rig is an Ampeg SVT 7 PRO pushed through a 410HLF Classic cab. It sets the bar pretty high. Do you use The Aggy Filter Twin and Octamizer pedals? I am also not overly impressed with the output they are giving me through this new rig. I must be doin' sumpthin' wrong. [Scratchin' head]😕
