They were beautiful. RIP Bob. I saw them in 1985. Long Beach, Ca. I had come hoping for the drunken trainwreck but instead they came out and were incredibly tight. For around 30 songs. Just an amazing performance. So good that the response at the end of the show was unlike any I'd ever seen or would ever see again. No one wanted an encore. None was needed. They'd given it their all and that was enough. We were drained and we just watched it. They burned up every ounce of energy in that room. Stunning. Outside the venue after it was all over people were in a daze. You'd hear things like "Fucking hell, they were so good I can't believe it," "Man, that was incredible," "I think we may have just seen the best show they've ever done." I wouldn't doubt it. It was the best show I ever saw.

At their best, the Replacements were indeed a great band, not just a very, very good band. Although their drunken antics were often amusing, and the stories can still make us laugh today, they were not what really mattered. In the end, the lifestyle almost surely hurt them. They so often failed to deliver their best, even in the good years. And after Bob's departure, as far as I can tell, the greatness you saw that night was gone for good, never to return.

It's so perfectly Replacements-esque that this clip of them playing SNL has to be shown low-res and framed sideways otherwise it gets taken down. That's awesome that even in 2022 they can still screw around with authority that way. They were a great band, just rockin' knuckleheads like the early days.

its funny to me how replacements pre-dated grunge, and were not quite of their times, and then when grunge came around, they were playing soft and sweet. They are the holy fools of rock history but so fitting. i recommend reading their book. Maybe the best book on a band ever

They (while fantastic) were raging alchoholics and this isin't indicative of their live performances at the time. They would start out then devolve into just fucking around. This was a pretty damn fine perforance for them. The big deal is that Westerberg said "fuck" and got them banned from SNL like many other bands that just shone too brightly too quick, was just another nail in the band's coffin...also the guitarist was a domestic abuser.

I am here because of that, but they don’t seem that bad. There is a Wikipedia for SNL difficulties. This is the only time a person or band has been banned due to being impaired. I find this very hard to believe given the lifestyle many actors, comedians, musicians etc tend to live. Plus how long SNL has been on. I expected plenty of random intoxication issues sprinkled in through the 70s/80s

I remember seeing this at the time. I was 16, a huge 'Mats fan, so this was a big deal. And I guess I have a very vague memory of thinking it was kind of a train wreck. (I distinctly remember Westerberg not singing the chorus, and thinking that was weird.) But in the intervening years, it's been described so often as a complete disaster that I guess I internalized the conclusion that it really was one. But looking at it now, it just seems like a great performance--going right to the edge of cliff and taking a good look down, but pulling back just in time. Kind of sounds like Crazy Horse interpreting the Sex Pistols catalog. I think if you go back and watch the Stones' SNL performance when they were promoting the Some Girls album, it would seem even more tenuous and about to fall apart as this one.
