One of the most highly anticipated and popular demos at Big Grill 2022 was bushcraft and woodsman expert Ray Mears. Ray demonstrated how to de-bone a whole salmon by hand and cook over fire using methods he had been taught by a native tribe in Canada years ago.

A true gentleman and a legend. He has cooked all over the world with tribes in the jungle, Australia, Africa, and all over Canada (where I live) and it's fascinating to watch him gather and cook the food wherever he is. He has gone back in time and brought these old skills to us, the viewers. I have been watching him for such a long time now, and he has taught me so much that I have used in the bush. I have cooked fish very similar to this method, and it is absolutely delicious when you gather wild edibles to go along with it. He knows anything and everything you would ever need to know in the wild. Brilliant. Also, here along the Rockies in Canada at this time of year, we get a lot of thunderstorms and that has caused quite a few bushfires to pop up close to us. People have had to evacuate, but luckily we are getting rain for 3 days. I remember in 2020, the fires were out of control and they were so close, all you could smell was smoke and the sky was orange all throughout the day. It can be a horrible experience when you are evacuated and leave everything behind, then return and see the aftermath and your house has burnt to the ground. Always be careful when camping and having a fire going. Make sure you have a big bucket of water with you beside your fire. And if it has been very dry, do not go into the bush and start a campfire even if you have 20+ years of experience. Anything can go wrong at any time and it spreads so quickly, by the time you even notice something has gone wrong, it's already too late. Respect the forest and make sure you check if there are any fire bans in the area you're going to be in. I have gone camping when there are fire restrictions, and I just bring my camping stove with charcoal and a couple small propane tanks. Yes, it does make it a little less cozy without your campfire, but at least you or someone else won't be burning down a large portion of the forest. Always be careful and have fun!
