A lot of people make the confusion, but Batman is not sleeping when he's upside down. He's clearly moving his arms in the scene and he wakes up on a sofa. He's most likely simply bored out of his mind as he's usually on the streets during that time, but instead Vicki is there.

I think Bruce not knowing that Jack was his family's killer until he saw him again, could be explained by trauma. Maybe he had blocked out the face of his family's killer? That's a possibility.

No wonder, because I wanted Robin to be in the movie as Batman's equal rather than his sidekick. (With Johnny Depp playing him.) Everytime a director makes a Batman movie with a dark-setting, they always have something against Robin.

I find it weird that Jack Nicholson is still probably most comic book accurate Joker that we've seen in live action movies... but I think that has more to do with how movie makers simply refuse to give us a "comic booky" Batman and instead focus on "realism" which saps a lot of the fun you can have with the character

Nah man you can totally do a realistic joker, I feel the closest we got was the end of 2019s joker sure it was a little “we live in a society” cringe, but the way he carried himself, the dancing, the difference between his laughing sickness and his genuine laughing at the end was pretty good

Yea I don't understand why they keep doing that. They should use the more fantastical comic booky elements. An idea I've had for a while like to see is a tv series where each season would be based around a different era of the comics and would be made using the filmmaking techniques of that time. So season one would adapt comics from the 30s and be made in the style of a universal monster movie. season two would do the 40s and so on and so forth. also batman would start as a silent protagonist who delivers his first line at the end of the first season. Batman would begin season two as the more ruthless version from the golden age and his character ark from there to season four would see him slowly softening and becoming more like the batman of the Adam West series. season 5 would see Dick Grayson going off to college as batman has to adapt to the changing landscape of Gotham City. I could go on but you get the idea.

I think the issue with Nicholson's Joker (aside from retconning him into the Waynes' killer, and killing him off at the end) is that, while he's obviously inspired by the comics, the inspirations aren't consistent. Often, he's a menacing Modern Age Joker, but just as often, he transforms into a goofy Silver Age Joker. Those are two very different characterizations, and they never quite mesh.

I think in the novelization or comic book for the movie, it was said Vicki Vale didn’t really reside in America much. She was traveling the world and was localized in Corto Maltese if I remember the name of the place where she lived before correctly. So that could explain why she didn’t know who Bruce was or his background until she moved back to Gotham.

In 1985 Tim Burton was gonna do a Batman origin movie as Tim's script treatment with Julie Hickson shows, but the screenwriter Sam Hamm got the idea to instead treat Batman as a mystery so Batman (1989) plays up Batman's mysteriousness in the shadows, which is back to how Bill Finger originally did it in 1939, his origin wasn't revealed until months later in a two page origin. Sam Hamm explained in Back Issue 113 (2019), "You don't start with Batman's origin. That's the mystery. Batman is a mysterious vigilante, a shadow, a rumor. He has the Gotham underworld in a panic. Which happens to be exactly the way he was introduced in Detective Comics #27 [1939]." Batman needs a strong nemesis. Of course Jack Nicholson Joker steals the movie. Jack Nicholson stole Batman (1989) and Heath Ledger stole The Dark Knight. Tim Burton explained in the book Burton on Burton, "There is an inherent difference in the characters. The Joker is an extrovert and Batman an introvert. So you can't match the energy, the balance. You have this character [Batman] who always wants to remain in the shadows, to remain hidden. If these two were standing on the street, Batman would always be wanting to hide [in the shadows], whereas The Joker would be, 'Look at me. Look at me.' So that's part of what the energy of it was. I certainly wasn't less interested in Batman, it's just that he is who he is, and The Joker is who he is. Some people got it, some people understood it. Obviously, a lot of people thought The Joker was the thing, but a lot of people found Michael [Batman] to be more compelling because of that. He captured a certain subtle sadness in his character. And there was a pent-up, bottled-up feeling to him."

I think Bruce hanging upside down has been misinterpreted for years. He's not sleeping. He's moving, so he's not sleeping. I think the scene is meant to imply that he doesn't sleep at night. You know, because he's Batman. He's restless and exercising, and I think Vickie waking up in that moment is meant to be somewhat of a "huh, he's upside down. That's odd" moment.

I was born in 1984 so you can imagine how this was a very formative movie for me. I remember the hype and marketing was insane, the movie was huge, the toys were awesome, and the NES game was dope as hell and had excellent music. The movie just had an aura that no other movie had, and the nostalgia for all things 1989 Batman is potent. It's not a movie I like to judge in hindsight, it's one that I like to bring me back to that time it came out.

It's best to ignore Batman fans when they complain about casting. They said that Michael Keaton would be awful and unbelievable as Batman (which is kind of the point of Bruce Wayne), I remember Adam West expressed disappointment in not being approached to reprise the role, people thought Ledger would be awful, people thought Bale would be great, people thought Robert Pattinson would be bad...the majority of Batman fans are wrong about casting pretty much all the time.

My personal theory is that the Joker targeted Vicki specifically not because he found her sexually attractive, but because he hated women - and "beautiful" blond women in particular. He blamed his near-death and disfigurement on a woman, after all, and this woman looked not unlike Vicki. I think this could be true especially because it is true in real life. Many rapists, for example, are not attracted to the women they rape. But they do feel a lot of fear and anger toward women, and rape can be a way of expressing these emotions. Also, serial killers who have stalked women have often expressed misogynistic attitudes.

I think the changes to the Joker's origin in the movie worked quite well in the context of the movie, I really liked this symbiotic relationship concept. It's a matter of taste if you like it or not. But for me, it's a great bit of character work when you see it over the first 3 movies where Batman develops into the character we know, at least when it comes to the no kill rule. I think that Jack had some relly great Joker moments. The exact moments that the Ledger Joker did not have and when he did, they were almost 1:1 copies from this movie. That's why I think that Heath - while his performance was really good - wasn't a good fit for the Joker. Or the movie didn't handle him well. He would have been a much better Anarky. Yes, this movie isn't perfect and even I don't like all scenes in it. The whole museum scene and the music aren't my cup of tea, this doesn't serve a real purpose for me. But overall, they give me what I want from the characters. Maybe I'm biased because I'm both a fan of Jack and Burton. But both Burton movies are the gold standard for me, even when they are not perfect. I think Batman and Burton were the perfect match, because unlike some others, I want my comic book characters to feel like comic book characters. Not in the campy way of Adam West, but with the awareness that they are comic book characters. That's why an attempt to show a "realistic" Batman doesn't work for me, especially not with the villains movies tend to select because they are popular.

I always find it interesting how older fans who grew up with the 1989 Batman makes it sound like the 1989 is the holy grail of Batman movies for decades. Pretty much everyone praises it heavily, but the movie deserves such praises... before 2008 with *"The Dark Knight"* , it used to be everyone's favorite Batman movie, (sometimes tied with his direct sequel, both Tim Burton's Batman films were always highly regarded). And for a while, TDK became the new Holy Grail, and if before that Jack Nicholson was considered untouchable as the Joker, the frenzy peaked with Heath Ledger's Joker, to the point where lots of people love to repeat the same thing as before, "he will never be topped!" Now that we got *"The Batman"* in 2022, there's a third candidate for the "Holy Grail"... I guess I'll always be a little bit sad that we never got that solo Batfleck movie with Deathstroke and Leto's Joker (with much better material than what he got in the SS cut we got... I liked him much more in JL Snyder cut), it could have been a nice way to say goodbye to the DCEU for good, instead of getting a non-released Batgirl solo movie... Oh well, I better enjoy Batfleck in the upcoming Flash movie then. Just 9 days left...

I’m only now realizing just how much the first Batman movie has in common with the first Superman movie. Neither title character gets much in the way of development, both villains get way more attention (and are closer to Bond villains than anything), and all of the side characters exist primarily to react to the existence of a superhero. Along those lines, Michael Keaton is Batman for the same reason Christopher Reeve is Superman: they were the first to do it on the big screen. Don’t get me wrong: both were great in their respective roles. But the biggest reason is because they were the first to do it on the biggest stage and therefore set the standard going forward.

You know what Batman also struggles with? The way the costume-designers made his mask, Keaton can barely move his head. Why couldn't they just make it a removable, pointy-earred, Bat-helmet instead?

12:51 - when Batman '89 came out, the guy that played Knox did an interview where they asked him if there were plans for a sequel, and he went on and on about how he hoped so, so we could see where his character goes, but he kind of made it sound like he was playing the main character.

I always thought the Joker is older, but not high age range. The Joker is weird, he was red hood and had a child. Batman/Gordon protects them. Weirdly enough, he semi cares about Punchline than Harley. Harley was manipulated, but Punchline choose and accepts. Punch seek him out, Harley did too but for psychiatrist exam. edit: He did sex with both, I am thinking he was bored.

That's it, Vee, we're done. ...j/k '89 was my Batman. Kinda still is, really. I keep going back to it and just loving every second of it. For me it just feels quintessentially 80s and Keaton is my favorite Live-Action Batman for various reasons. Jack's Joker is still my favorite as well, despite how much I loved Heath Ledger's portrayal. That being said... I was three years old when '89 came out and I grew up with the Animated Series thereafter. I recall this was probably the first time my father and I disagreed on something so fundamental in my upbringing, because he grew up with and loved the Adam West show. As I grew I exposed myself to everything Caped Crusader. From the old comics my dad still had, to the new stuff being produced in the 90s and nearly everything I could get my hands on pre-Internet. This gave me a greater understanding of the characters and what I loved about them. And despite my previous statement of still loving this movie, I have to agree with you on many of your points. In fact, '89 is still my favorite Batman movie to watch, but is not my favorite Batman movie. That title now goes to The Batman. And although I still love Keaton and Nicolson, my favorite portrayals of the characters are Conroy and Hamill. '89 is my favorite movie to put on and get my dose of nostalgia and love for the character, but it is far from the best Batman depiction out there today. However, yes... It is thanks to '89 and everything that it both got right and got wrong, that we have what we have today. Keep up the great work, man. Love your channel, and it's not just because we have a very similar mind about this stuff.

I agree, it's not "the best" but it's still pretty darn good. I enjoy this one and Batman Returns because the characters in the movie isn't treated like a joke AND it still has a sense of fun while being serious. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin both take the series too far into the childish. While the Nolan trilogy and The Batman both take the source material too seriously. I hate this idea that Batman must be brooding about his parents death at all times, and if he isn't well then that's just not Batman. Which for a franchise that is as heavily invested in mental health as it is, I think is a bullshit take. On the topic of race swapping. There are times when race doesn't matter to a character, and times when it does. As you said, Harvey Dent worked his way up through the ranks based on guile and charm. I would argue that story works BETTER when it's told from the perspective of a Black man. But anyway you want to look at it, Harvey being white doesn't matter to his character. But there are few Black men like Billy Dee who could've made that work. And finally, one of my favorite quotes still to this day is "you are a vicious bastard Bertelli and I'm glad your dead!". It still cracks me up, and I don't think anyone BUT Jack Nicholson could've pulled it off.

To be fair if it wasn’t for my favorite version of Batman from 1966 the 89 movie wouldn’t exist cause Batman was declining in sales in the 60’s and dcwas on the verge of canceling him but the success of the show and movie saw a resurgence with what was called batmania and his sales picked back up saving Batman from cancellation by dc but for me it’s because of the 89 movie Imy 5 year old self ound Adam west’s version cause a second wave of batmania happened for the 89 movie and Adam got syndicated on family channel now known as freeform and that’s where my love of Batman started but has grown into a general love for Batman as a character Also the series and movies started my love of behind the scenes information by looking online for ways to watch the series when it wasn’t being syndicated and finding the websites with the information on them to now watching interviews the cast has done over the years talking about the series and movie Michael is in my top 3 of Batman actors

I don't know about you guys but I miss the clown aspect in the clown prince of crime when talking about the Joker, the closest that came to recapture that energy was Cameron Monaghan but even then it became a show reel for the history of the character rather than a separate thing standing on it's own and I don't know about you but I love the idea of the Joker being a sociopath that terrorizes Gotham just to amuse himself.

I don’t like that The Joker is Bruce Wayne’s parents murderer. It doesn’t make any sense at all,yet even after Burton and Keaton are gone this is still canon in Shumuchers “Batman Forever”,when Robin moans and says “your parents weren’t killed by a homicidal maniac” with Val Kilmer’s reply “yes they were”.

They wrote it like that to force some kind of way to get Batman heated against the Joker, too us both of course this is lazy and uninspired. The best old-school revenge story was when the Joker crow-barred Robin II to death. I'd rather see a live-action version of that, but superhero films unfortunately often kill off the villains during every final battle, instead of coming back for more like Darth Vader.

It's different times today. Back then a race swap wasn't a big deal because actors were still cast on merit. Billy Dee encompasses the smooth politician and fit for Harvey Dent. Today race swaps are done for click bait Twitter hype and hate clicks. The actors usually do not encompass any qualities like the original and the white male characters are written to either die and make way for the diversity hire or be utterly incompetent or a villain.

Harvey Bullock is unpleasant to work with as he can be gruff, rude, and abrasive, but, although he can be scummy, he has passionate morals, and is not a dirty cop - I assume this is why chubby Lt. Eckhart isn't a dirty cop in the film, and I think fans would definitely agree that this is the right call.

I really wish Tim Burton understood the relationship between Batman & Jim Gordon. Other than 1 scene in Batman Returns they have no relationship and barely work together to stop crime in Gotham. It made since in this movie because Batman was still a mystery and Gordon didn’t know if he could trust him but no excuse in Batman Returns

Gotta disagree that the movie showed the perfect balance of Batman. It's not his movie & he's the title character. I maintain that Joker is the protagonist, while Batman is the antagonist. The movie needed more Bruce/Batman. It should have cut a few Joker scenes & added a Batman scene or 2 of him on the case & maybe visiting Gordon, though we did get these things in Batman Begins.

Joker being a wiseguy makes sense when you look at it as a pretense. He wasn't the embodiment of chaos and anarchy before becoming Joker so a wiseguy makes sense. I don't care for the multiple choice origin because it's saying "write the story for me" his origins matter otherwise Batman's doesn't. He's evil for the sake of being evil and no one likes that. Batman doesn't look for problems he stops a crime when it happens the crime looks for trouble. Batman's mind is in the right place as you can see he can form a cogent conversation and has no problem with detective work. No in the case of superhero movies accuracy and performance matters no race or gender swapping, period.
