Alex, I want to thank you for explaining the MARTHA SCENE, Yes that scene you interpreted contradicts the very fact that Batman in BVS killed lot of people, but holy shit, I'm one of those people who made fun of these, you shared this info. Noe I somewhat realize Zach did add something good, funny thing is that that scene is in the wrong movie.

Honestly would’ve been better if he just resorted to lethal with his normal kit, in the Arkham games if he used those blades or snapped some necks as many times as he knocked someone out with a ton of punches the game would be much more face paced Hell, imagine if the batarangs were all designed to kill? Putting good men in extremely difficult circumstances, and watching them somehow preserve their soul - despite their flaws - makes for great storytelling. EDIT: A lot of moral arguments in the commments, but I'm referring to storytelling in general. Bottom line: Killing would be a violation of Batman's conscious. Thats his conviction - without it - he is far less unique and interesting.

@@JDoe-gf5oz No... I see a different meaning. Killing a life, to save a life... doesn't make you a villain. Your hands are tainted, but your soul only becomes tainted if you choose killing as your first option. It is a last resort that is never to be considered until everything else has failed. Some foes... can't be reasoned with, it is not wrong to fight or kill for the sake of protecting the lives of others. Your soul only becomes tainted if you let yourself enjoy taking the life of another, even if they were a monster incapable of redemption. Look at Superman vs Zod in Man of Steel. He killed Zod, saving people's lives, but he didn't rejoice over his death, his soul remained pure for the mere fact that he felt guilt for taking a life.

@@JDoe-gf5ozIt isn’t Batman’s responsibility to kill villains, that is the work of the Justice system. Bruce cannot be Judge, Jury and Executioner, then you’d be demonizing him for that. He takes on the role as protector of the innocent, minimizing the harm the villains cause. It is the role of the government to decide what their fate is when they’re caught. It is not Batman’s fault they are corrupt, and even a billionaire can only do so much to actually fix what’s broken. The scene in Iron Man you showed works for Tony's character because he specifically targeted the terrorists in the least destructive way he could. He was blowing shit up, sending people flying, but the moment doing that would put an innocent in harms way, he switches to the homing weapon and they just silently drop at the same time, leaving the civilians unharmed, because he WAS that civilian, he doesn't want to hurt people that suffered and are suffering like he suffered, he wants to hurt the people causing it. With the Batman v Superman scene, not only does it fly in the face of the No Kill Rule, it also endangers anybody who might be around. He uses a fucking minigun to set a van on fire and then runs it over, blowing it up in the process. Where did the bullets go? Where did the shrapnel go? Probably a bystander who couldn't get away while this was happening. That batman isn't a hero, that batman is the worst kind of vigilante: A man who not only flies in the face of the law, but endangers the innocents he supposedly protects through his attempts to keep them safe. Setting off a pipe bomb in the mailbox of the local pedophile is going to hurt the neighbors as well.

A lot of people don’t realize the exact reason why he doesn’t kill. It’s not really to stop himself from being like the criminals he stops. Batman is hyper aware of his mental state. He knows that he is insane and if he lets himself slip even for a moment then he would turn out the same way superman did in the injustice story. It would never end. Okay. But no. The problem with Injustice was never that Superman killed. Which is something a lot of Injustice fans (and Injustice 2 itself) seems to not realize. The problem with what Superman does in Injustice is that he and a bunch of his super powered friends decide to establish a totalitarian regime that forces the entire world into subjugation. The issue with Injustice is the exact same as the issue with the storylines where Superman is a Nazi or a Communist. Superman's propensity to kill people who quite frankly should've been legally executed by their world's government is irrelevant.

The real important thing is not the not killing rule, but the not killing JOKER rule. No Batman has ever killed a Joker, wether that be from sheer will power, or because that’s your fucking wife. And you may say that The Batman Who Laughed proves the rule wrong, but when you think about it, that Joker never really died. He just lived on through Bruce’s body, carrying out his sadistic dreams, with nobody to stop him. And Batman knew this was a possibility, but was to blinded with rage to realize. And think about it: whenever a Joker died, Batman is the one who always carries the guilt, even when the Joker kills himself.

I've never been to comics, but Batman was always a fascinating character to me. Ever since I started watching the Justice League cartoon as a child, Batman's became a very important figure to me for some reason I'll never quite understand. I love how he's such a symbol of fear, of darkness, yet he's not 'edgy'. Batman's always been an amazing subversion of a dark character in the most 'conservative' way. He simply does not kill, and he is a GOOD human being. I love him. Anyway, this video made me emotional.

That first line is probably my favorite Batman quote. To me at least, it illustrates the guilt and devastation of letting Joker live all those years, only for him to repeatedly escape and kill innocents. Imagine that crushing feeling of repeatedly putting Joker and other psychos in a cell for all those years; but only to realize you made virtually no positive impact on Gotham, while crime & murder is still rampant and all that work was for nothing. By letting Joker live all those years due to Batman’s self-righteous moralist “no kill policy”, Batman is just as much responsible as for the demise of many innocent lives as Joker. His no kill policy actually killed more innocents than if he killed one villain, thus preventing the demise of many innocents.

The concept of Ben Affleck's version of the character killing people due to becoming tired of the pain and grief he experienced throughout his long career was never an issue to me. In fact, I welcomed the change as it gave a new take on batman and actually gave him a reason to kill unlike Keaton's batman. However, my issue with BVS is that superman should've been the character to bring batman back to the hero he once was. There's no guarantee that Batfleck always killed criminals and maybe there was a time he actually cared about this rule. Up until the point superman says Martha, Bruce has found reasons to excuse breaking the rule and why he kills criminals. But saying that name changed something in him and like he does with many of the people he encounters, Superman helps make batman a better person.

Orry Maine. I agree completely. I use Marvel Unlimited to read comics (which I am still a newb at) and I prefer Marvel over DC. But my favorite hero overall is Batman. Since every Batman comic I read has to be bought separately, I was looking for a Marvel character that would scratch my Batman-itch. I like Daredevil because he has a lot of the characteristics that make me enjoy Batman (e.g. the detective aspect). So he has a lot of similarities to Batman in crucial areas but is still very much his own character and not just a Batman ripoff. And then he also is more Marvel-ish (more normal and human) and integrates into my preferred superhero universe.

Batman views all human life as sacred. Everyone has a family, everyone could have a child, and killing that person removes any chance for a goodbye, or for a happy child, or for anything. Red Hood never found human life sacred like Batman, he only sees the kill count, so he only sees a killer. Red Hood doesn’t see Deadshot as a man with a daughter he’s trying to protect and raise, Batman does

+Alex Wade Choosing not to help someone isn't the same as killing them. Leaving someone to their own devices is not the same as ending them. Walking away isn't the same as murder. Thousands of people are killed worldwide at this very moment, and yet we (you, me, cousin Tom and Lisa next door) are not doing anything about it, are we killing them? Is that the same as killing them? Sure we can't help all of them, but we could choose to even help just one, yet we aren't even trying to find out who we can help; whose death could we prevent if instead of watching youtube videos we went out and saved someone. For whatever reason we are making a choice not to, and that doesn't make us killers. We just deem it's not worth the trouble, not worth sacrificing ourselves, not worth our time nor our comfort. We aren't even trying (giving money to charity is just a way of bribing one's own guilt) I know this is a shitty thing to say, but it still doesn't change the fact that we aren't trying everything we can - and that is something we have to come to terms within ourselves. Everything in life is a trade off, with what choices are you willing to live with? Is someone else's time more important to you than your own? These are the questions everyone should be asking themselves. So if someone has a moral stance of not killing, it isn't an obligation to save everyone.

Kingdom Come is one of my favourite comics. And i really like that Batman doesn't kill too. It's just that when he does kill, it's interesting to see what pushed him over the edge. And how in the end he became good again. Or how maybe in this universe, he never becomes good. The reason why Kingdom Come and many other comics are popular, is because the writers have liberty to deconstruct characters..just like in The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman kills. Saying that Batman should never kill, is denying Batman the story arcs that have been so important to his character, that reinforces why he should not kill. It's like saying Batman can never fail.

Oh these armed soldiers are invading our country, better disarm and tie them up while fighting a war... surely this won't give them a major advantage. One of the most compelling things for me about Batman is that he doesn't kill and his enemies know it but their still afraid of him. He sets his boundaries and he doesn't cross them and everyone knows it but they're still scared. He's made special forces pack their bags and leave just by calling them by name and explaining their medical history. He's standing over you in your bedroom in your high security mansion just ask you a few questions. Every time I see Batman kill somebody in a movie it just takes me right out of the moment. I'm not watching a Batman movie at that point. At that point I'm watching every other superhero and vigilante movie ever, and there's a million of those. Batman is a character not as genre.

Batman dreams of a world where he isn't needed anymore, and killing isn't going to get him any closer to his dream. Sure, one could argue the world would be better off without the worst Batman's rogues gallery still breathing, but even still, killing is not Batman's responsibility, nor his right, and he knows that. So he does everything he can to avoid that, because not only does he not want to for moral reasons and what not, he *shouldn't.* That's not his place. Execution falls on Gotham's justice system, which has let almost irredeemable villains like Joker live, time and time again.

Just kill joker and lex luthor already. Why just kill his minion but not kill the master mind, stupid rich people.

Batman's "no-kill" rule is what causes the symbol of the bat, a symbol that Bruce made to strike fear into the hearts of criminals, to be a symbol of hope and pure willpower. The no-kill rule has even caused character development to members of the Bat-family, especially Jason Todd and Cassandra Cain. Jason grew to be the man Batman could never be, the man who doesn't mind killing, all due to batman never killing the Joker to avenge him. Cassandra was raised to be the best assassin in DC's history, but she was inspired by what she calls the symbol of the bat and the no-killing rule, making her into living proof that Batman can inspire people to do good. This is how integral the "no-killing" rule is: It is not only batman's moral code, but it is integral in his story and character, It is what truly contextualized the symbol of the Bat, and most importantly, it is what makes Batman a hero. Thanks to all who read my ramblings.

Please. Batmans no kill rule was started to cover up the fact that Batman was a ripoff of the shadow

Other than the fact that its at this point based on the writer. In THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS he straight up snaps jokers neck, then lights his body on fire. But then theres comics like Injustice where he would rather imprison a Tyrannical dictator superman.

@@DevinEMILE A broken neck doesn't always kill people. The Joker killed himself by snapping it. Batman then set the dead body on fire
