The gas mask is actually in his Scarecrow mask. He ripped his mask off while spraying it at him. But also it looked more like he was just in general of the beating that Batman was going to give him off screen. I think in the comics he breaks his ribs and dislocates his shoulder. Batman enjoyed it because it was payback for making him snap and think about his mom.

@@cutiepie6796 also batman getting captured is the main plot point in the Dark Knight Rises. Bain beats him up, captures him, hauls his ass into a dessert, and throughs him into the jail/pit, where batman is trapped whilst his entire city gets over run and held hostage

So the gas would affect him. You are aware Scarecrow's mask has gas filters to protect him from the fear toxin right?
