Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the second issue of Batman: Jazz!
Purchase the DVD at atopthefourthwa...
Originally uploaded June 9th, 2014.
ORIGINAL INFO: This entire endeavor will be a failure if we don’t see Batman playing a saxophone at some point.
RUMINATIONS: Viga was in town for a month or two during this episode. Aside from doing the ice effect of the previous episode, I thought of a neat little “I am a Man” gag for her by grabbing the My Little Pony comic, showing us, for the first time, what the hell happens on the other side of the punch. As for anything else in the story... well, this one speaks for itself.

So, whereas Doug Moench's stories glorify Batman to the point where stories that don't even have him somehow _still_ have him, _Fortunate Son_ and _Jazz_ are pretty much Batman In Name Only, just barely keeping him connected. Also, love how we see the extent of the 'I Am a Man' punch. XD

Batman (Linkara): "Okay Robin, in this variation of scenario 46-D, a jazz demon will launch shards of glass out of his saxophone at me." Robin (Linkara): "Okay. Batman, this is getting ridiculous!" Batman (Linkara): "Shut up, Robin! This is totally possible! Now, in scenario 47-A, a super-intelligent emu will use its psychic powers to mind control me..."

I was getting sick of this crap already, but when the writers threw in a quick jab at artists who sample music, I lost all patience. These writers are pretentious music history snobs who take analyzing music way too goddamn far. From an outsider's perspective, what's happening here is that Blue Byrd is a rather messed-up person who's too self-absorbed because of his music and the inherent "meaning" behind it because everyone else is too entranced by it to see clearly, and as a result he did some horribly self-serving things, particularly faking his own death and leaving his family and friends behind, that everyone he directly harmed and neglected is giving him a free pass on because they're too entranced by the music's "message" too see the situation clearly. ....so, in other words, he's the Jazz-musician version of Goku. Oh, SNAP! He's capable of doing this one thing apparently so wonderfully that everyone around him takes way too goddamn seriously that they forgive him for all of his crap, unable to realize that their lives are being ruined for the exact reason that they're all spending too much time psychoanalyzing musical interpretations and not enough time living their goddamn lives ....yeah, didn't this happen in Batman: Fortunate Son, too? Linkara mistook the entire thing as an indictment against musical culture because everyone in that comic was acting dangerously insane for *precisely the same reason*: spending more time thinking about musical interpretation than living in reality? You know, that same thing that the writers are apparently really in to and what drove them to write these comics containing these characters that do this thing? ....Ya know, at some point, you have to wonder if this is not about Batman and is more about a round-about cry for help.

It does have that self-preachy quality that hangs around works by artists with mental problems and waaaay too much investment in their bullshit. NGE, Cerebus the Aardvark and the Adventures of Sonichu are interesting comparisons, as they have that quality too. You gotta wonder how these writers are doing now. And now I have another entry on my "crazy bastards' weird fanfiction" list (should I be scared that I can narrow it down into a Top 10)

@hitomisalazar4073
@hitomisalazar4073 4 жыл бұрын
It does in so far as Goku is obsessed with fighting. For example when the Namekian Dragon is given a wish to teleport Goku to Earth he says no. Why? Because he was busy learning cool techniques from an alien race and exploring his Super Saiyan capabilities. Rather than you know... go back home with his wife and son and be a family man. Similarly when he's dead after Cell killed him, he gets a chance to come back to Earth for a day. What does he choose to spend it on before everything goes to hell? Not say, helping guide his son, or reconnecting with his wife, or anything like that. Nah. It's to participate in the World Martial Arts Tournament so he can have fun. Heck even take the fight against Cell. It's up to Piccolo to tell Goku that he has massive fucked up and is going to get his son killed because his son isn't a combat maniac who is going to unleash his untapped potential just because a good fight is being offered. While Goku went first just so he could indulge in the best fight of his life before handing it off to his son. The comparison fits because Goku is to fighting what Blue Byrd in this comic is supposed to be to Jazz. Someone who based his entire life around it. Is consumed by it. Is some natural genius at it without compare... and who even if they might be a good person at heart will completely drop and fail people just for the sake of indulging in it. More akin to drug addict behavior of self destructive choices and failing everyone around them to get their fix.

Okay... in between his career as a comic book writer and his current status as an inmate of the state of California for child pornography, Gerard Jones was- among other things- a music critic. I believe he dabbled in music himself as well. But here's the thing that has started to irk me as I watch this review... and Fortunate Son: The idea of 'the special artistic genius who is almost unearthly good at it are the only ones who are really people not in spite of how creepy the world thinks they are... but because of it'. You see it a lot with well... people with Jones admitted predilections. Now, it's not as creepy here as it is in some of Gerard Jones other work. He didn't create the idea of Hal and Arisia being a couple, he did get them back together and this time she was back to her 'true age'. And there was a lot of icky in stuff in his run on Prime if I remember correctly. Not it's not as blatant as a Victor Salva movie... but it in hindsight it is all kinds of 'I need to vomit!' Oh.. and the irony... some of Jones best received non-fiction was a true crime book. Oh the irony.

To be fair, even Kingdom Come isn't what one would call a Superman story. He's the main character and key to the story's themes (primarily passing values onto the next generation and the ways one should use amazing power) but it's also, for want of a better term, an "anthology." It's more of an intelligent deconstruction of superheroes and how power can corrupt but one should be altruistic.
@lorddrayvon1426
@lorddrayvon1426 3 жыл бұрын
The problem comes is that such a story needs a good focus like Kingdom Come or you get what happened here. Either focus on the main character or make a story that justifies the main character being essentially the audience self-insert (ie the one experiencing the events new like the audience). This and Fortunate Son are some of the worst examples of how badly doing it poorly can go.

Here’s the thing, this story could work as a music murder mystery. Let’s take this back to the drawing board. It’s Gotham City in 1947, Batman is out on patrol when a scream rings out in the night like a shrill violin. Batman runs over to the scream to find a small group huddling over a body, a jazz musician named Charles “Blue Bird” Birdside (In this version, he’s not the creator of Bebop, he’s just a good musician who got merked). Batman decides to solve the crime as he feels that there’s more to the murder. While investigating, a group of hitman posing as jazz musicians confront Batman and they get into a fight. After interrogating one of the thugs, Batman learns that Blue Bird once worked for Carmine Falcone. Bird was once an opium dealer and he decided to keep his share of the money instead of giving it to Falcone. Now much later in life, Falcone finally got to Bird. Batman confronts Falcone and interrogates him, stating that he may not be able to get him for his other operations but he can get him for murdering Blue Bird.

Oh, and "expose the dark soul of this country"? I've listened to Charlie Parker's Sessions album, and there was no expression of sorrow and shame in there. I mean for gods sake, Coltrane break through record was a covers album titled 'My Favorite Things' and Louie Armstrong's biggest hit was a show tune. How are they expressions of depression and the darkness of the soul?

I like how the countess character keeps trying to make it a white/black racial thing. Where white musicians stole his music. So we then find out instead of being dead. He was studying modern composers.....in Europe. Kind of curious if that plays a part invthe story. Or was some real bqd oversite.

This seems like something that should have been a short story in Batman Black and White, not a full fledged comic.

It was a story in Black & White (sort of.) While the story did revolve around jazz and a myth around a famous musicians trumpet, Batman was only really in it during the end. Still a great story though.

Owen Fournier Yeah I read that and it was done much better than this. Which is why I said it shouldn't be a full fledged comic.

I think the rhyming the Jazz demons due is related to a trope in DC Comics where rhyming demons are one of the lowest classes and they have to ear the right to speak......they can also get it as a punishment

8:12 Ah yes, because the GCPD, known for it's corruption and godawful maintenance of their city, would _totally_ search for a random black man. (I'm Black, btw. I'm just pointing out the Countess' train of logic is just plain stupidity.)

Hey, I know it's the kind of mistake you said would be easy to make w/out a background in Jazz (and I'm really not trying to be pretentious like the writers of this Batman story are) but you played "Classical Gas" over the "Batman Jazz" intro... Eh what do I know, I'm just a third generation jazz/rock guitarist/vocalist who's grandad was a Luthier (that doesn't make me better than anyone, it simply gives me a solid background in these genres). And my family's not religious, so t's honestly a little bizarre when I hear someone doesn't know their modern music history because it was so inescapable for me growing up. Music probably served the place of religion for me... Feel free to ask where I got my morals from growing up; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

NU121493255 Perhaps, but I didn't think Dick Greyson was Robin at the time, he'd become Nightwing by then. I could be very wrong on this, but I think that is the case.

+CheeseCrusader42 Batman: Jazz was published in the mid 90s, I think. Tim Drake would be Robin then. Jason Todd was long dead, and Dick Grayson had been Nightwing for about a decade.
