I got to say that Miller was right in regards to Jason Todd's death. Having hotlines for people to vote on whether a teenager lives or dies is, in hindsight, an absurdly cynical move on DC's part.

That's one of the reasons I love Brat Pack, dark and brutal as it is. The whole thing starts with a radio show jokingly having a vote as to whether the teenage sidekicks of the city's superheroes should die... only for the main villain to reveal he started the vote, murdering the teenagers and holding the whole city in some ways accountable for it. It's a great read if you want something unflinchingly and brutally dark

It's something I'm conflicted over myself. Like at the time Jason Todd was really unpopular in the fandom but a minority of writers and fans really liked Jason Todd from all I've picked up on it. The idea of throwing out the story to a bit of democracy was fair enough as I see it. You have a very contentious point and compared to things like: "Lets reboot the entire setting so we can do things like make Starfire a Sexual Goldfish" and all... well I appreciate they cared enough to actually ask before just ham fisting it. But it also had a problem of the fact that the poll got more popular than the comics at the time. With a lot of people thinking it was a poll to kill Dick Grayson, Age 12, not even knowing who Jason Todd actually was because Jason Todd never entered mainstream pop culture, or why anyone would want him gone. Though some things in the eventual fallout of the event that were checkered. It came out with probably my favorite Robin after all, Tim Drake. But it also started the point of The Joker going all the way Murdering Psychopath Without Jokes sort of stuff...

Re, the Pearl Harbor metaphor - the person who made that "hard choice for the greater good" was the President. We choose the President in part to make choices like that, and Presidents are, at least in theory, accountable to us. No one elected Batman. It's the same reason why Batman can't kill. Society hasn't given him that authority, as it has to judges, who are, again, accountable to the people.

9:45 I believe you misread the scene where the two Mutants decide not to kill Bruce Wayne because they "Can't do murders when they're into it", they didn't back off killing him because he was willing to fight back; they decided not to kill him because Bruce WANTED to die; and it took away all the fun. Bruce's pose isn't of somebody ready to deliver an ass-whupping, the way he's kneeling and his arms are folded shows he's all like, "Let it come. Just get this over with, I no longer have the will to fight back anymore.". This tracks with Bruce's character arc, during his fiery crash during the drag race in Issue#1; he says, "This would be a good death... but not good enough." By this point in the story Bruce is tired old man with a death wish who has lost all purpose in life, and by the end of Issue#4 he has found a new lease on life when he speaks the last lines in the story: "This will be a good life. Good enough."

@@alimowla3204 I enjoy Batman Beyond and the DCAU as a whole, but it's treatment of Batman's end of the road leaves a lot to be desired. He becomes so cynical and jaded that he effectively pushed all his allies away and was living as a grouchy old man until Terry came along. Now I do like Terry McGinnis as a character and the mentor-apprentice dynamic he shared with Bruce, it's just getting to that point that I had a problem with. And then they revealed that Terry was Bruce's biological son and as such was always destined to be the next Batman (screw Dick I guess) and I guess that Amanda Waller counted on Terry and Bruce having a chance encounter in the future. Boy that would have been awkward on Amanda's part if that never happened. Also, speaking of screw Dick, there was that whole relationship between Bruce and Barbara which... yeah... I've always thought Batman referring to his partners as his "soldiers" was his way of putting emotional barriers around himself to hide his vulnerability. He hasn't been truly vulnerable since his parents were killed, so he tries to distance himself from his closest friends and allies so he doesn't have to feel that kind of pain ever again. I think he truly thinks highly of his friends, probably even going so far as to call them his family, but he either won't or just doesn't know how to express that after years of dealing with some of the worst of humanity. But keep in mind, I'm only referring to Dark Knight Returns Batman. I don't consider DKSA or Crazy Steve & Robin to be in the same canon.

About Batman shooting at the mutant: Granted, you can’t see the target’s eyes, but the mouth gives the impression that the mutant is in a state of shock - aghast at the very idea that *anyone* would fire bullets near her, much less Batman with a five-round burst from a machine gun. One of the things that Miller brought in here is the idea that, even though Batman hates guns, he *does* know how to use them and actually has fire discipline. As in, he can place a shot pretty close to the target without actually hitting it, on purpose. It’s one of the reasons why the picture of him carrying a rifle is a shock, even though it’s revealed it’s a piton gun. Miller’s Batmobile design has also been influential on future portrayals due to its quasi-military nature (see Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler).

@@comithologia I mean, to me, the real Batman will always be the former - the Heroic Dark Detective - no matter what BS Writers try and have tried to pull. Batman is my favorite Superhero of all time. But that's just the Point: My favorite SuperHERO. Batman as a paranoid paramilitary violent Vigilante, as you called it, worked for me in ONE Story: Infinite Crisis and the lead-up to it. Mostly because 1., we got some actually justifiable Reasons for him being paranoid and 2., the entire Point of his Arc in this was realizing he had gone too far, admitting that he had gone too far and had been wrong both to himself and others and resolving to do better in the Future (even if Future Writers screwed the pooch on that one). The Batman who trusts those he considers Friends and Family. The Batman who honestly calls Clark Kent/Superman his best Friend. The Batman who confronts Problems and solves them through legitimate cleverness and resourcefulness, not just because he's DA BEST EBAR!!! The Batman who is both capable and willing to work with his fellow Heroes. The Batman who, when confronted with a dying psychic Girl that threatens to destroy the World in her death throes, sits down next to her to soothe her mind and keep her company until the end. And the Batman who tries all in his Power, both in Costume and as Bruce Wayne, to genuinely make the World a better place in both big and small ways, even while risking his very life, soul and sanity. THAT is what Batman will always be to me. Dumbass Writers and Editors and moronic Stories exalting Violence, Edgyness and the ABHORRENT concept of the "Bat-God" be damned.

I'm also surprised that Carrie hasn't become a part of the main DC Universe yet. I'm still waiting for her to appear in the Batman Beyond comics and reveal to Terry that she was Bruce's original successor after he retired or something. All art is political and all art is commercial. This is an undeniable fact of humanity. Art sells ideas, even a drawing of "Little Debbie" is trying to sell you an idea; the idea that kids will enjoy sweet treats. However, unless an artist is using their work to preach a political idea, the artist has the right to not have their work used as a political cudgel. Some art is created to be pure escapism, and if it is earnestly trying to only be that, let it be that. That said, however, you're not wrong for reading DKR via a political lens.
