There's very little to misunderstand about Injustice. They needed an excuse for the heroes to fight each other for their fighting game. They decided fridging Lois was the best option. The story as a result is fucking terrible and has only been kept going because the game itself was successful and no other reason. I don't like Injustice, just so you know.

@@FNGLHR Yeah, but it's also character betrayal for Superman, implying that losing everything in one fell swoop like that would nearly instantly turn him into a dictator. The comics tried their best to make it work, since they showed that Superman didn't have Lex Luthor as an enemy and stuff as an example of corruption to fight against, but they could only do so much. That's part of why I liked Brandon Routh's Superman in the CW Crisis, since he had lost most of everybody in a similar manner(through the Kingdom Come backstory), but he chose instead to immortalize those he lost by refusing to be corrupted. It could almost be seen as a direct criticism of the Injustice idea that has been going around.

@@gregorymelissinos337 And when they did the Justice Lords plot, it wasn't just evil Superman for evil's sake. It was exploring moral questions about superheroes with people like Shazam, Green Arrow, Amanda Waller, and even Batman causing the original members to reevaluate their worldviews and have room for character growth and introspection about using the incredible abilites and powers they've been gifted. But also, the Justice Lords arc was really all about the importance of Wally West to the team since his death by Luthor is what triggers it. It causes both the League and the audience to reevaluate a character that has been mostly the comedic relief of the team. The Justice Lords arc show what happens when the heart and moral center of the team is absent.

With all due respect I disagree, Steve is a good person and certainly Sam is too, but as it is reductant to define a superhero for his powers it is to ignore his story and what he fought. I can imagine why you feel the need to defend this particular case but that's not the reason why these kinds of changes don't work. Batman is Bruce Wayne, despite Azariel and Dick Grayson and others wearing the cape. This is because these characters are not just costumes, gadgets and superpowers. Steve and Sam are different characters, of course, they are different Cap. Comparisons will be inevitable and the original will be increasingly credible due to its history.

@@billymccrary2246 Tim Burton would not be fit to helm a 'Superman' project(Thank God 'Superman Lives' got cancelled!) and to be honest, he's not fit to helm a 'Batman' project either, and neither is Christopher Nolan. Tim Burton made Batman(AKA Bruce Wayne) a killer, depicted the Joker(AKA Jack Napier) as having been the guy who killed Thomas & Martha Wayne, and came up with a bizarre supernatural origin story for Catwoman(AKA Selina Kyle). Christopher Nolan made 'The Dark Knight Trilogy' too grounded, he made it so that Batman let Ra's al Ghul die, which, if you're portraying the Dark Knight correctly, he wouldn't do, since not only does Batman not kill villains, but he also doesn't let villains die if there's a way that he can save them(At least in 'The Dark Knight', he didn't let the Joker fall to his death.), he wasted Two-Face and, obviously, his alter, Harvey Dent, by killing them off, what he did with Talia al Ghul was stupid and a waste of the character, and the way that 'The Dark Knight Rises' ended was stupid. Also, his version of Batman doesn't seem to have genius-level intellect, like the Caped Crusader is supposed to have. After all, when he's portrayed correctly, Bruce is the world's greatest detective. And, Christopher Nolan's version of Bruce doesn't have quite the level of obsession with and drive for crime-fighting that the character traditionally has. After the tragic death of Harvey Dent and, obviously, his alter, Two-Face, Bruce retires from being the Batman, which, in most cases, is not something that he would do. And, after saving Gotham from that nuclear bomb, Bruce quits being Batman again, fakes his death(even to Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox, and James "Jim" Gordon), and starts a new life with Selina Kyle(AKA Catwoman).

This injustice parallel really does highlight how little Snyder understands Superman. In Injustice, the whole League is more willing to be oppressive. Steve Trevor was a nazi spy who only befriended Diana to steal the lasso of truth, leading her to think humanity's nature is to betray and destroy. Then, Superman's dosed with fear gas into thinking a pregnant Lois is Doomsday, flying her into space, and when she dies, Metropolis is nuked. Superman is tricked into killing his wife, child, and everyone in Metropolis including his closest friends. And even THEN, he's only SLOWLY turned into a dictator after being influenced by Sinestro, Wonder Woman, and Black Adam. And even with all THAT, he still is doing it so that humanity is safe from itself. In the Snyderverse, because batman is a few seconds late to save Lois, Superman joins with Darkseid to destroy the world.

If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing But if there is a 1% chance that God exists, and that Heaven & Hell are real, the only viable wager is to spend your life serving God. because if you don't and he's real, you'll spend all of eternity being tortured in Hell, while you could have been chilling in Heaven had you made a little effort during your short existence on Earth. God exists (G) God does not exist (¬G) Belief (B) +∞ (infinite gain) −c (finite loss) Disbelief (¬B) −∞ (infinite loss) +c (finite gain) Magnate Warren Buffett has written that *climate change* "bears a similarity to Pascal's Wager on the Existence of God. Pascal, it may be recalled, argued that if there were only a tiny probability that God truly existed, it made sense to behave as if He did because the rewards could be infinite whereas the lack of belief risked eternal misery. You know, as much as people keep dumping on the Joss Whedon Justice League, at least that movie had in the beginning Superman acting like how Superman should. Ignoring the CGI erased mustache, it had Superman just talking to some kids like a normal person. Rather than him looking depressed and sullen, he actually showed some charm and humanity by casually answering their questions for a vlog. But the Snyder cut took that out, and decided to put Superman in an all black costume(because we don't have enough black colors) and also removed another scene of him actually being Superman with him triumphantly returning in full costume to fight Steppnwolfe. Instead we added in yet another scene of him posing with Jesus symbolism.

Let's not give Whedon too much credit, knowing what we know now. Yeah, he guided that, but it was clearly a mandate set by... well, Warners and DC themselves. Make this Superman actually be like Superman, whatever the cost. They recognized Snyder's plan wasn't working and used his absence as an opportunity to course correct. Snyder unfortunately doesn't see the importance of these character establishing moments. He just wants what looks cool and thinks making references to the comics is enough. The Black Costume doesn't really serve a worthwhile thematic purpose here. It's just there because it's like the comics and Snyder thinks its cool. He might explain a reason "Oh Clark thinks he has to earn the colors back" but it's clearly a BS excuse. Earn them back why? What did he do to not deserve losing them? Dying? Several other reviewers made this point, so I'm just re-iterating it here: This movie (along with its hardcore, die-hard fans) doesn't really know the difference between "Adult" and "Mature." Sure, in some contexts, they're one and the same, and they're treated as synonyms. However, a movie can be adult while not being very mature (cases in point, the slew of "Rated-R-for-Raunchy" comedies, like Revenge of the Nerds). While some movies geared towards kids can deal with mature themes (The entire first act of Up). BVS is a 13-year-old's idea of what "mature" means, and in this case, it's "all the stuff in an M-rated video game." It's the cinematic equivalent of watching someone who just turned 21 go on a bender. They *THINK* they're being "mature" by doing all these "adult" things, but the dramatic irony is, it's making them look more immature as a result.

I have gotten into an argument with a Snyder fan about the scene of Batman killing people. I don't get what makes people think that is somehow deep or insightful. Batman is goes out of his way to cause as much damage as he can, this causes a conflict Superman, and it doesn't go anywhere. It's just there for the sake of violence, but Snyder fans act like its deep. That person also went and compared it to Obi-Wan slicing a man's arm off in the bar. Yes they both resorted to killing, but Obi-Wan was a hero fighting in a war. And yet he tried to talk down the situation and only drew his lightsaber when the idiot pulled a gun.
@FNGLHR

Yeah, this is one of those "Cynics know better" crap that permeated this film a most media. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but when fans see the character (or protagonist that is originally paragon pathed instead of renegade), they don't call out that characters behavior, they just excuse it and use: You just don't get, man! It's deeper than you think! You have to go harder to fix it! Etc, etc. (Insert Black Manchester, Joker, other edgelord quotes). Cynicism does not equal wisdom.
@dragonstormx
@dragonstormx 3 жыл бұрын
@@battlion507 I have been arguing with someone who acts like he's so smart and throws insults at saying the movie doesn't actually try to make Batman killing criminals look cool. Yeah sure. If Batman killing criminals isn't something we were supposed to be cheering then we would see him called out for it. In fact we do see that form a conflict with him and Superman, and despite it being the reason Superman doesn't like him, it's just dropped after their fight. Nobody calls out Batman for killing Luthor's mercenaries with the scene being designed as a badass flashy action set piece. It's not played for horror or anything similar. If Batman killing criminals is meant to be wrong then shouldn't we see Alfred chew him out for it? Or something? It's clear from Snyder's other work that he just likes flashy violent set pieces. He makes Rorschach's fights in Watchmen more impressive than in the comic, which missed that Rorschach isn't the badass he thinks he is. Actually that nicely sums up his Batman in this movie. He feels like somebody writing Batman thinking he should be like Rorschach.

The funny thing is that according to Snyder's plan, he was supposed to become a" real " Superman only in the final of the whole story, after Batman would have died. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But then into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development: When I was ten I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates the DCEU's foundations. As much as people hate the comparison, when going from Iron Man 1 to The Avengers, the foundation was mostly solid, and audiences knew enough about the characters thanks to how overall faithful their personalities were to establish the MCU going forward. The transition from Man of Steel to Justice League feels like an attempt at deconstructing these characters, these heroes, but a deconstruction only works if you know who these characters are, so to look at the foundation set for Justice League, you get a Superman that doesn't act like Superman and dies in this movie, a Batman that doesn't act like Batman until the end of this movie? Maybe? A Wonder Woman which, credit where it's due, acts like Wonder Woman, 3 cameos that we're supposed to care about, and a stature with three boxes. Throwing in the Snyder Cut, and we get a Joker that doesn't act like the Joker (I am genuinely convinced someone confused Zazz for the Joker). I'm not including the rest of Suicide Squad because they don't matter in Justice League. The whole "It's setting them up to BECOME the heroes we all know and love" doesn't mean much when time that could be spent setting them up as heroes is spent on God symbolism, padding, and drawing out a run time by basically going in circles. The only reason Wonder Woman feels like Wonder Woman is because they made a movie about Wonder Woman, not a movie about how the Greek Gods are dicks and Diana must be burdened to go fight Darkseid by stopping World War 1 which causes the War World to come to Earth.

Your complaints about this Supes not acting like he's supposed to is indicative of why this approach does not work.If your entire plan is basically "These movies are an extended origin story for how Superman starts acting like Superman" you need to make me invested in this character's journey. And the fact is, I'm not. I don't care about this Superman... because he doesn't act like Superman. You want me to go through several movies with this shitty version of this character just to finally get to him SORTA being like him near the very end of your big epic three part Justice League trilogy? No, why can't Superman BE like himself NOW! Don't make us wait five movies until he becomes recognizable! Captain America worked because they trusted him being in character like his comic book counterpart would work. By making Superman's character arc actually BEING him becoming his baseline self, you are essentially telling me you think his original concept, the core of who he is supposed to be... is boring and you'd rather making him a miserable sadsack that has to reach that point. It shows a level of distrust in who Superman is as a character that you have decided you can't just write him as a good person who does good. You have to make him as cynical, downbeat and miserable as everyone else. It's a bad idea for a character arc. You have to make me actually invested in this Superman by making me care about him. I'm not going to be invested in a person who I don't like! And you've made a Superman I don't like and he won't be someone I do like until the very end of a movie that is years into the future. You've decided Superman is only interesting if he's not Superman... what does that say to an audience? What does that say to fans? You're asking me to wait for something that should've been resolved in the first movie! I'm not sticking around for that long, not if I decide this version of this character exists only to drag his fucking feet. Show me why I should care! You never did, Snyder! And here's a point about that montage, it's not just that Superman is bummed out about saving lives. It's that he never talks, reassures or comforts anyone. All we see is people holding him in reverence and fealty. We don't know who these people are, they don't matter, they're just... bugs he has to help. Hell, in the boat dragging scene, there are people on the top of the boat, essentially as small as bugs in the wide shot. The fact is, that montage is a bad example of Superman saving lives. Not just because he seems disinterested and bored, but because every frame seems to reinforce a message of "These ungrateful gnats just do not understand this great God's burden. They should be happy for even the slightest bit of attention he pays them! How dare they expect so much of him! And this voiceover of his critics, how truly this planet doesn't deserve him. Why, he should just shrug them off." This Superman is an Objectivist. That's all that montage proves.

Its my second favorite Superman story after All-Star, i can help but gush about it.
@FNGLHR
@FNGLHR 3 жыл бұрын
@@Vesperitis Alright, but that's a Graphic Novel retelling the origin of Superman. It's not a five movie long arc that only resolves by the end of things to make Superman act like himself. If this was the arc for Man of Steel it would be fine, because Superman would be established as who he's supposed to be by the end. I don't know Secret Identity, but I assume it ends after he's found himself. It doesn't end at the quarter way mark of that development and expect you to pick up the next book in the series where it inches along towards progress. Because you got invested in this Clark's journey it worked. But Snyder was speeding through various popular Comic Book stories just to eventually, after all of them are done, finally get to what should've been resolved in the final act of the first movie. I'm not waiting five movies for that. I can wait one story, one book, not five. I'm going to lose patience fast. I had no time to get invested because Zach never gave me a reason why I should care. What made this Superman worth investing in? What did he do that made me want to watch his journey. Because for most of it, all I see is some mopey kid from Kansas look so depressed and bored over the idea he has to save anyone's life.

@@voiceofreason467 It's the fact that this portrayal of Superman does not feel like Superman. As pointed out in the review, he rarely smiles as he is helping others(which is admittedly a small point), but the bigger point is the one made by FNGLHR; that namely no one wants to wait three (or more) movies for Superman to get to his baseline persona that people like. That the early film montage scenes sends this message of how Earth doesn't deserve him and how maybe he should just ignore them and their struggles. This is a view shared by several critics of the film. Now, I did not say Superman was an Objectivist. FNGLHR stated that opinion. I merely agreed that he should never be portrayed as one. FNGLHR was highly dissatisfied with the film, and I agree with him on many of their points, if not necessarily the sum conclusion of said points. But still, that was a bad take on Superman in this film. If you liked the film, however, that's fine. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I just like to repeat how this is the man, Snyder, who wants to remake (because it was already done once) an adaption of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. For those who don't know, it's a bad take on Frank Lloyd Wright being "misunderstood" while everyone else can't see his greatness and prefer the opinions of some critic who liked a novel that didn't use the letter "o" or "e", I forget which. It also has a rape scene, which is a running theme in much of Ayn Rand's books, but it's OK because she ends up with him anyways. Either way, it "climaxes" with a trial in which the Wright knockoff confesses he did in fact blow up and destroy a building that was still under construction, because he designed it, so it was "his". So of course he was "well within his moral rights'' to destroy the building when they changed the designs on him, which in the building trade happens all the time. It's a change order, and owners have the right to make those. So yeah the main character is a rapist-terrorist, our hero, everybody!

I mean, if Linkara is going to bring up World's Finest so will I; while our two heroes get off to a rocky start in that film, their different methodologies setting them at odds...notice how they're still being a little professional about it. Batman warns Superman about the kryptonite even if he is a bit of an ass about it, and Superman listen and takes it seriously (turning up to the Joker's rendezvous in a lead suit). They might not like how the other operates but they still recognise that they're more or less on the same side and are prepared to pool information. They might not like each other (at least at first) but they can still be adults about it and try to cooperate even if its through gritted teeth (again, at first). Compared to that, the Snyder version of the heroes are a pair of grumpy, posturing children throwing a tantrum, unable to even bother understanding why things aren't exactly the way they want them right now. And its just a shame that "claiming to be mature but actually more childish" just sums up Snyder's filmography as a whole

@@3DSDF if we're being technical, it does a better job of that than BvS. Batman is hardened, cold, and barely feeling any of the compassion he had at the start of Batman the animated series. Not to mention that you could argue that Superman in the animated series has only been around as a Superman in less time than the version in BvS, but he still has better control over his powers and still managed to earn the people's trust by just being a decent person. That's my two cents anyway.

Not to mention, from what we can only assume, Batfleck hasn’t faced metahumans before. He was used to just regular thugs and gangsters. @@3DSDF I wouldn't say that the Snyderverse the more realistic version. I would even argue that Batman and Superman are more adult and realistic in the animated series than in Zack Snyder's films. They actually act like adults and don't waste time trying to fight each other. They have opposing viewpoints but they look past that because the situation they're in during world's finest demands that of them. Also, considering that you brought up Batman in the animated series dealing with metahumans, then we should be able to at least agree that Batman in the animated series has had his world flipped a lot more than the version of Batman in the Snyderverse during the events of man of steel. Another point I want to bring up is that losing a Robin due to an estranged relationship can be just as bad, if not worse than just Robin being killed. Not to mention that we the audience have a connection with Robin in the animated series, while there's no connection to the Robin who died in the Snyderverse. Both worlds may be different, but the Snyderverse isn't necessarily better than the animated series universe.

This isn't a misunderstanding, that's just what Superman is like, here!

Its funny you mentioning the whole, "I don't want to see movies in this universe because this is the same universe with MoS and BvS." As while I have enjoyed some of the other movies in this setting, I GET THAT! Like there is a bit in Shazam where they imply Superman does a VERY Superman thing and takes time out of his day to make a bullied kid happy just cus he's a really nice guy and someone asked him to do a small act of kindness and... I don't believe it. I believe SUPERMAN WOULD DO THAT FOR SURE! But I don't think THIS Superman would give a single, solitary **** about making some random kid feel important and cared about because this Superman seems to think even saving lives is a burden he only grudgingly puts up with! Like... Shazam (and Aquaman to a lesser degree) seem to be taking place in a version of the DCU which is on the surface the same as the Snyder films and Suicide Squad, but tonally, morally, thematically are just WILDLY different! Wonderwoman 1 kind of feels a bit more coherent with the grim and gritty Snyder-verse while not being as utterly nihilistic, but the rest of the DCU seems to either be wallowing in misery or trying to pretend they are part of some other, more idealistic, silly and bright DCU where murder is bad and enjoying being a super hero is allowable.

Honestly. I liked Aquaman, that movie humanized him. His appearance in the Justice League movie, especially in the Snyder Verse treats him like a God of the Sea. It felt genuine, it was colorful, it was a Heroes' Journey for Aquaman to become King of Atlantis!

That whole rant about Superman and how you can't watch these movies without connecting them back to Man of Steel really reminds me of what in particular I hated the most about this movie. Full disclosure, while I grow colder on it more and more, I ultimately still liked Man of Steel and was one of the people that defended choices in it with the idea in mind that this is a movie showing us how Superman started out and was looking forward to the possibility even in spite of what had been shown before that BvS was going to give us a Superman that felt like Superman. Then the movie comes out and Superman behaves NO differently from Man of Steel I feel. In fact there are many instances where it feels like he just outright forgot lessons. For instance, Zod's death was defended by Snyder as him wanting to show Superman taking a life to demonstrate how he'd become so dedicated to not doing that. Arguments aside for how that didn't need to happen, I bought into that. BvS? Fuck it, let's have Superman tackling warlords through walls and potentially killing people, let's have him later on threaten Batman in such a way that makes him look so sinister and let's have him threaten Lex (Yes I know why he did that but seriously that still feels wrong to me to have Superman be portrayed like that.). I probably would've been able to handle a Superman that's not as optimistic, I got that in MoS and thought that movie was alright... but the least, the LEAST this movie could've provided was a Superman that grew since we last saw him.
@ianr.navahuber2195
@ianr.navahuber2195 3 жыл бұрын
RIGHT!? THis Superman feels like he has already been doing this job for decades. while also feeling like scared of people depending too much of him. which doesn't feel at all connected to how he behaved in man of steel. When in Man of Steel he was more in a "journey to find his origins", but still helping people whenever he went but under a low profile (to the point kinda everyone in smallville knew he had powers but just kept it as open secret). and then being forced into the superman role once zod and co arrived when clark has barely learned who he is and thinking about what he is gonna do. here is like they forced superman to behave more hostile so people feared him and batman was more justified to threaten him, while almost having everyone react like superman just appeared NOW, when in theory we should have at least the people lois talked in MoS say clark is just a good person trying to do good.
@DaPopeANata
@DaPopeANata 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Before any of the other movies came out, Man of Steel felt to me like it was the origin of the Superman identity AND the personality. A story of a Clark who had yet to make up his mind what he wanted to do and who he wanted to be as a person. He wanted to help people, but wasn't quite sure how he should do so, and maybe second guessed the ways he had done so previously. Then Zod's invasion forces him out in the open and helps him realize what kind of hero he should be. That he would dedicate the rest of his life to be more like the man we know from the comics, he would undergo training to try and ensure the collateral dammage and villain killing from his first outing never happens again. Which I think could have worked, and then the sequel did none of that. If I didn't know better, I'd think the entire creative team behind the movie changed after the first one and the new people decided to go in a different direction.

@@salvationtime2230 It's too easy to blame Watchmen and postmodernism, (which is in the business of problem pointing) without understanding the intent. Alan Moore was pointing to how Superheroes who fought crime were oppressive to poor people. If you go back to the golden age though, the Superman of the era was far more radical, especially in how he attempts to do things like raise $2 million to save an orphanage, or cause a disaster to force the city government to build affordable housing, and punishing corrupt businesspersons who are exploiting their workers. Plus, there's Namor in the same era, who might have been considered a radical as he takes down cops, saves animals in zoo captivity and breaks bridges for polluting the seas with rust. In the silver age, you have Hulk battling the NYPD, SHIELD and the US army; ya can't get anymore radical than that. No, the problem may lie in how superheroes are less revolutionary, and more reactionary thanks to Frank Miller.
@salvationtime2230
@salvationtime2230 3 жыл бұрын
@@CosmoShidan That's a rather simplistic viewpoint of Watchmen, as the whole novel has many complicated viewpoints. One of which was being a critique towards the Thatcher and Regan era of the 80s. Plus putting all the blame on Frank Miller is also just the tip of the Iceberg, as his star was already fading away by the 90s, in fact many writers after Miller didn't grow up with his work, but with The Bronze Age of the 70s and 80s, which is why we had things like Spider-Man selling his marriage to the devil.
@CosmoShidan
@CosmoShidan 3 жыл бұрын
@@salvationtime2230 That's not a simplistic view, as Moore's critique of the neoliberal order during the Reagan-Thatcher years is what I mean that superheroes at that time would have been seen as oppressive toward the poor. The policies of both Reagan and Thatcher were about dismantling social safety networks in the wake of the previous oil crisis, which the poor are dependent upon, and cracking down on objections to these policies, which Moore accused superheroes of defending. Since you mention the view points of the characters, if you mean Moore critiquing the ethical stances of deontology, utilitarianism and eudimonia, he indeed did an excellent critique of how people act in the real world, as opposed to how the three ethical stances ideally view how people should behave. I'm not sure as the Bronze Age is merely to be critiqued, as real-world issues also appeared as far as the silver age.

In what could've been a tense moment, one that shows Lex's ruthlessness and intimidation, is instead ruined by a woman freaking out over a jar labeled, "Granny's Peach Tea" and is possibly full of urine. Replace the jar with something else and both the actress' reaction and the scene would've been far more effective.
