The closest Rusty Wallace ever came to winning at Daytona/Talladega. These tracks always seemed to bedevil him.

I thought the same thing. I loved this race because it was the first time I could ever feel happy for Mikey, which was needed for a long time.

Man, I forgot Geoff Bodine made such an awesome save; I should've put that into my James Finch montage.

You really get to see how Darrell feels for Mikey at the end of the race when he really doesn't much until Mikey crosses under the checked flag. He knew what happened the last time they both were there and it was great to Darrell that way.

We were on the backstretch for this race and I remember once we knew it was ending under caution, we left. I remember people booing and throwing stuff. I didnt, and I was probably madder than anyone because Rusty actually had a shot at winning this race had it gone green again. Oh and gordon had to pit right before a restart and my friends and I had fun counting down how many seconds he was away from getting lapped.

This Happened When I Was 9 Years Old Between The 3rd Grade & The 4th Grade When Todd Bodine, Geoff Bodine & Ryan Newman Who Had Tangle One Another Almost Cause A Multi-Car Wreck Coming Across The Start/Finish Line,It Was Live On WFXB FOX-TV(Channel 43).

The Commentators did not notice the drivers were banging into each other like a lap before the wreck happened. They were going at it.

It was disappointing to see it finish under caution, but I'll admit I was also a little relieved, because I was rooting hard for Michael.

I remember being at this race on the frontstretch and seeing all the debris from the stands on the backstretch flying onto the track. Never saw that coming but I did understand why.

Did anyone notice that at 2:15 Jeff Green was already spun out when Dave Blaney hit which makes it look like he was spinning about the same time Ryan was which means there were two separate crashes happening at the same time. I also can't believe that no one noticed that Elliot Sadler hit Goeff Bodine in the back going though the tri-oval at 1:52.

No NBC did the '02 Daytona 500. Allen Bestwick gave the finish call.

Rusty would of won this race if not for the caution. He never won a restrictor plate race, but he was right there in a number of them. I truly thing had that caution not come out, he would of won.. this race along with the 1999 Daytona 500 are 2 that still haunt me as a long time Rusty Wallace fan.

Yeah Iw as on the front stretch. It was kinda funny that not many people threw stuff on our side.

@robmerrill888 actually it would've been the same result for him or even worse. I know everyone wanted Jr. to win it (even me) but It was best that Rusty stayed on the bottom and be sure to get a second place for himself. The DEI cars were just too good.
