These are used lithium batteries with 2/3 life left in them. I bought them from Battery Hookup. In this video I tear them down, wire in a BMS, and capacity test. I think these batteries are best suited to home backup systems. Where you are on grid and won't be cycling them daily.
Lots of details on how to wire in the BMS.

I wish he was my neighbor - I NEED HELP... @DavidPoz NO MORE 10% OFF????? WTF’s up with them??? @@alext8828 Naw not like that at all LOLZ. IDK what tube is talking about... But he still gets the 10% an ya they kind of did go corporate in a sense, They got Flat shipping rates $350 that lowered cost's ( I spent as much on shipping as I did my first pack $1200 lol) They are doing more testing to all cells now, An they give 5% off to all orders w/o YT codes... They did change when you put the code in tho... It is no longer at cart but during check-out.

Dave you've (an the peeps on the Facebook group) done all the work that I was about to do but got sidetracked by a handful of bad batteries that were sent me. I will say that BatteryHookUps response was top notch. They immediately shipped me 4 replacement batteries without being asked, compensated me for my time and the supplies I had to buy to package the 4 batteries up and ship them back. In BatteryHookUps defense they would not have known that there were issues inside the pack because I was the one that broke the screw locker on all 4 packs that had issues. A minor annoyance that set me back a week or so but has now been resolved - the new batteries were delivered yesterday and going forward when these are in stock again they will open and inspect every pack before shipment. When they are back in stock I will for sure be buying some more. Thanks for the great video as usual!.

One thing I found with my larger LIFEPO4 pack is even though I purchased them as a matched set, they can still deviate. I run a High current balancer in parallel to my 200A Daly BMS. This makes sure that under high loads I can keep them balanced better to prevent those super low cells. This 200Ah 12v pack is used in an RV that usually sees very low load, but my 2kW/4kW inverter can cause a sag that triggers imbalance protection early, also my truck is equipped with dual 330A alternators to a high current bus, before the balance board was installed, the high current to top off the battery when towing (trailer can get up to 150A through my Anderson aux cable and DC/DC controller) would trigger the BMS to go into imbalance protection, now I have to pull 400A to even see a variance in cells, but the daly only lets me do that for a few seconds.

Excellent video, as always -- clear and concise. I love seeing the step-by-step tear-down (and re-assembly) -- it takes a lot of the mystery out of these things. And I am envious of your workshop -- nice setup! You answered a lot of questions, raised one or two more. You mentioned these might be good for backup (which is what I'm looking for). I'm guessing they would be stored/maintained at a storage voltage of ~3.7V per cell until needed. In the event of an outage, they'd be put on line (either a manual or automatic transfer switch), and the charging voltage set to full (4.2V per cell). And once the grid is restored, draw down to 3.7V per cell, and then taken off line. This is assuming that Li-Ion batteries lose capacity of stored for long periods fully charged (like the LiPo batteries I use in rc airplanes). Is this a sensible line of reasoning? Thanks for the excellent instruction -- you've been a great help to get me started in this game.
@DavidPozEnergy
@DavidPozEnergy 3 жыл бұрын
If I was using this as backup, and it will be sitting long periods of time, then we have a dilemma. You are correct, that 3.7v per cell is considered the best long-term storage voltage. But, on the other hand, in the event of a power outage you will want as much stored power as possible. Personally, I'd probably set my charger to 4.0 volts per cell (56.0v) for a good balance. I'm also the type of person to test my equipment, so I'd probably do a full cycle (discharge/charge) every 6 months or so.

Paralleling multiple packs is what I did with my bank I built from the A123 36 volt packs I got from them. Currently have 10 packs with each cell group in parallel, and I converted them to 16s 48 volt packs by breaking apart a few packs from 12s to 4s and then adding those 4s packs to the complete 12S packs. Built out I have a 100ah 48 volt 16s pack and they are good for several thousand cycles. Just ordered some more of them and will expand my pack to 16 in parallel. By doing so all the groups are very even, none are drawing any sort of high c rates for charge or discharge and they are performing amazing compared to the BYD packs. If I were to do it all over again I would have never bought the BYD packs, I have 2 of those and while one of the two was in quite good shape, the other one is a mess of varying weak cells. I've had to add additional cells to each of its cell groups to balance it out and get it closer to the first pack. Setting up the A123 packs was more time consuming but it's performance is just so much better.

Great video David! Thanks for tearing this module down for us. Did you determine if the balance board (BMU) was active when not plugged into the higher level system? Also, since you scrapped the BMU could you salvage the mating connectors fron the circuit board and solder those to the new BMS, thus avoiding having to tear into the factory wiring?
@DavidPozEnergy
@DavidPozEnergy 3 жыл бұрын
No, I never did test to see if the BMU was active while it sat there. I've spoken with computer guys who install this type of system and they tell me "no". But I can't confirm it one way or the other. Could you salvage the connectors? Sure, I guess. But then I'd still have some jumper wires coming off to go to the JST connector, which is the one on the BMS. So I guess I don't see the point. But to each their own.

David, Your videos are always so complete and clear. A question you may be able to give me some guidance on--I am completely off-grid and currently use 2 ea propane 5,000 watt portable generators giving power at 30 amps and either/or 120 or 240 v ac single phase. My goal is to purchase some thing like in this video but I need to have an inverter (I think) to transform voltage to allow use of pumps and motors at above conditions. My use is nominal 8 hr/day at 50% of capacity (wattage) and 10 hr/dy. Until I can get solar I plan on having making the battery source transportable about a half mile where I can access power to recharge from the grid. Your comments are appreciated--thank you.
