Still calf was lucky else if they were hyenas or wild dogs then they would start eating him alive.. Lions at least kill their prey before having their meal.. Yup it makes us sad yet nature has its own law.. If someone wanna live then other has to die.. I saw videos of komodo or wild dogs or hyenas ..they r ruthless..too hard to watch those sorts of scenes

@@dheeraj2377 No. Lions often eat their prey alive as well. Especially if they are in a group and not solo hunt, where it is more obvious that they have to go for the throat if the prey is not paralyzed. In other case, usually one goes for the throat, and the rest start to feed before they prey dies of suffocation. :) Funfact: They prefer to go for the genitals as these are the softest parts and testicles are actually full of nutrein.

@@saintbutunholy True 100%. Earlier I used to think lions kill before eating. But as you said in a pack, one suffocates and the other starts devouring and goes for the testicles. Most lions do that ....

Apart from being a very sarcastic comment it doesn't quite work like that in nature. On the African plains all the large mammalian herbivores could kill all the large mammalian predators if they ganged up together and just trampled or gored them to death. And then what? With no predators the herbivores would have no predation and they'd 8ncrwae in numbers eat all the food and starve to death. So better save flippant comments to humans who'll understand the joke not to animals who can't think like humans in order to save the species rather than the individual.

Great post, Matt. I think the reason is because generally calves are easier kills, and they don't stop and think about exceptions like this - but the way you explained it makes sense. I'm not sure how immobile the calf was after the first attack, but by the second attack, it certainly looked like it wasn't going to move anywhere, any time soon. So there was no good reason for the lions to not do what you suggested after the second attack on the calf. My guess is that they are just used to taking out the calves first, and in the heat of the moment, had a hard time going off-script.

If there was a male lion there, I think both of them would have been killed. The adult buffalo can do serious damage to the lioness if it catches it with its elk. And there were only 3 lionesses there. Definitely not enough to take down the adult buffalo. Just getting the calf is good for them at that time, they will get more food if they need it later or tomorrow.

They aren't human. If they had the brain power to do as u say then they may not be in the bush but living in houses instead. Buffalo do quite well in their defence despite having the size of brain they have now. They rescue many of their kind from lion attacks.

Si un león estuviera al frente de una de ustedes solas, serían su presa. Así funcionan las cosas y la compasión no impera en el equilibrio natural.

Entonces (cambiando la palabra) es demasiado iluso pensar en rescatar al "pequeño bufalo" cuando este ya estaba herido de gravedad, su madre lo había abandonado y los bufalos al ser territoriales no lo aceptarían (Y eso si considerabamos el "milagro" que se salvara tras rescatarlo). Esa pretensión humanista hacia las reglas de naturaleza es hasta ridícula y enfermiza.
