I think my favorite part about the cinematic is, as you say, Anduin can't fight with a sword. His swings are wild, and trying too hard to be strong without skill or finesse. Such a subtle yet quality animation behind his movements conveys so much. Brilliant cinematics as always from Blizzard

In the panel, there were a tiny section mentioning minions of the old gods. My guess is that the old gods are the reason behind this conflict, and all this will lead to the Old Gods revealing themselves at the absolute worst/best time and be like "Sup guise, it was us aaaaaall along" and azeroth is gonna be like "DANGIT". Also this is the intro cinematic that will lead into the new exapansion approximately mid to late 2018. I'm guessing a lot of story will come up in the time leading up to the preexp and exp. That's just my 2 cents tho. Edited: Also notice the lack of external foes, external being the key word here. Definetely something fishy going on

This was really well put together, they established the war, reminded us what a badass Sylvanas is then used her performance to finally show that Anduin is on par with the other leaders and still can improve earlier. I feel one or two people wanted a flashy super smite from him but honestly a mass heal/rez is way more terrifying from a military standpoint, you've essentially doubled the size of your army (for an idea of how powerful it is look at Mercy before she got changed)

Hehe jk on the last part. Either way I believe while old Gods will be a threat in this expac, this will just be setting things in stone for the next xpac.

I just had a thought and it makes perfect sense. Alex said maybe the attack in the cinematic was a response by an attack by the horde. You said yourself it doesn't make sense for either side to attack the other after being semi cool through legion. UNLESS jaina does something to the alliance pretending to be the horde in order to prompt war. She hates the horde and no one agreed with her to banish them. To get the alliance to be on her side, she could do a massive attack that looks like the horde did it. That would be the perfect thing. Re watch the intro and listen to jaina talk. I'm 95% sure this is what happens.

Jo Nobbel! 2 things I see very iconical in this trailer are: - Sylvanas expressions before she attacks till the 'For the horde part' looks like a reflection of the scene where Vol'Jin gives her leadership and she feels surprisely honoured. Now she does the 'for he horde' while thinking back and give the shout real meaning with the other horde factions realising and go full roar! Finaly accepting her as leader even after the banshee mode they would so dislike! - Anduin doing mass ressurect/heal giving a secret smile on her face like she felt that he would now understand the need of 'raising' if what he did was a mass ressurect. Like 'Now you can see we are not that differant. From my viewpoint no matter what way its evil to bring back the dead :P - ALSO WHERE THE HECK ARE THE BLOOD ELVES IN THE TRAILER! Goblins? What I'd like is a month long prepatch event where we just beat the crap out of each other with a way of tracking which faction is winning. The result of the "war" affecting the expansion. At least that's what the cinematic makes me think of.

That look on Sylvanas' face after Anduin's big barrier heal was like, " now the fun begins." There is concept art for what is possibly Azshara, so the Old Gods will start to show later on. I think the faction war starts over something that happens in Silithus possibly.

I will reserve any judgement on this expansion since I have seen more. We don't know how Argus is going to conclude; we don't know the novel that Nobbel spoke about; we don't know why Teldrassil was on fire; we don't know... anything essentially. We have seen the classic old gods-tentacles over on Kul'tiras in them showcasing the island and this is an island expansion with pirates. We KNOW there's going to be nagas involved because of that. Therefore we KNOW N'Zoth is going to be involved some way. And between N'Zoth obviously being involved AND that you can play as a Void Elf this coming expansion... the Void Lords are going to make some kind of connection somewhere storywise. Not sure if there'll be any gameplay-specific stuff but there's going to be quests-galore and lore-galore to explain a lot of things. We don't know anything yet other than that they are trying to take elements from their most successful recent expansions at this point. Not to mention that we KNOW Anduin is neither a fighter nor a fool... so why is he fighting this...? Could all of this, as ridiculous of a theory this is... be a practice session between the Horde and Alliance set up in secrecy between Sylvanas, Anduin and Wrathion? Hell we can make more connections here! Highmountain has connections to Black Dragons, is this the Horde's in where Wrathion gets to manipulate people that way? I am litterally just throwing around random ideas to see what portions stick around because... that's really all we can _currently_ do.

I had to expect a faction war. For the last few expansions there has been no pride in your own faction. This will bring back people who liked PvP and the open-world aspect by shrinking the continents forcing Alliance and Horde to interact even more, and not in a good way. I have to say I am more excited for this next xpac because I really like WoW when it is faction-based. People, up until Cata, used to talk about their faction and diss the other faction all the time and I really miss that. That was what WoW was founded on. That isn't to say, however, that we aren't going to eventually get to the old gods. I can definitely see where you are coming from when you say that this expansion is going to be a reverse-MoP where this time we will eventually move into the new territory instead of it being introduced with the release of the expansion, but I don't think it will be as focused on Jaina being the antagonist as much as it will eventually transition into killing the old gods. On top of that, I can see the Alliance and Horde going into these raids on their own and getting their asses kicked only to realize that they will need the other faction to help them take on the old gods. I really want this xpac to go back to our roots in PvP, then have the next xpac go into the old gods through some resolution of killing Jaina or something like that, but unfortunately I believe it will address the Jaina situation early on, then in like 8.2 introduce the old gods again.

Feeling just as confused. Unless they have a super expansive pre-launch event, this war is gonna feel like it's coming out of nowhere. But at least maybe they're trying this time with the Horde v. Alliance stuff, rather than just leaving it as an awkward afterthought they have to try to rationalize each expac.

Full blown Horde vs Alliance just doesn't make sense given that we're actual literal allies across factions RIGHT NOW fighting against the Legion. Class Halls essentially broke down the faction walls, we allied with each other, fought side by side as brothers in arms, even launched missions to rescue members of the opposing faction in some cases....all out war against each other now just narratively doesn't make sense whether you like the faction war or not.

From the cinematic,the shadow direction suggested that the battle occured around the afternoon,with the Alliance outnumbered the Horde at least 2 against 1,from pure speculation and the preview of the Book Before the Storm,it appears that Sylvanas and the Horde wasn't ready yet when they start their attack to Stormwind,so the Alliance pushed them back,giving Genn at least enough reason to make another war with the Horde(or at least with Sylvanas)

The new continent and races are cool and all but i had the same feeling like you saying but how? and why are we returning to another faction war after the stuff that has happened since MoP, it feels unnecesary and i feel like the horde will once again be put into an evil eye to those not going in depth on lore or being newcomers to the game and thats strikes me badly
