There are some Bulgarian sources that claim Kaloyan had a head injury from when he was a young boy which caused him severe headaches and that's when people could really feel his wrath. According to them he was a really tall man, like 203 cm tall (about 6 foot 7') which is almost giant-like for that period and that'what made him look extremely intimidating and scary. Both these theories are based on a skeleton of, judging by the grave, a very rich person, found not so long ago which is presumed to be Kaloyan himself. Anyway, Kaloyan's definitely in my top 3 Bulgarian kings/tsars and I love his nickname.

Great video as always. The State of Nicea it's a later term to describe this state. The Laskarids's Dynasty (one of the greatest Byzantine dynasties, they started from a single city Nicea, and they took back a great part of the lost territory), actually they referred to the State of Nicea as "Ελληνικόν" (Hellenikon). It's basically the first modern greek state. Would love to see at this point, the epic Battle of Antioch on the Meander in 1211, between the forces of Nicea, and the Seljuks, which was decided by a duel between the two leaders the Basileus Theodoros Laskaris the First, and the Sultan Kaykhusraw I. It's one of the rare cases in History in which the battle was decided by a duel between two kings.

@@hellspawn6870 The fluidity of borders and problems with the establishment of stable dynasties during this era makes ascribing names to any of the (relatively) short-lived kingdoms/empires/'states' very difficult. Often it's a case of picking a name that is familiar to modern readers and using that. So it is rather arbitrary and liable to revision. Even long-lived and stable entities like The Holy Roman Empire can get named other things if the historian so chooses and wants to make a point, political or otherwise.

An interesting legend that lives on in Bulgaria about Baldwin's fate, is that Kaloyan's wife fell in love with the captive but he, being an honorable knight, refused the tsarina's advances. Then she turned towards her husband and told Kaloyan that Baldwin had tried to seduce her. Enraged Kaloyan plucked out the eyeballs of the ex-emperor and left him for death in " Baldwins tower" which is still preserved in Tyrnovo. That legend actually holds some merit as later, when Kaloyan was assassinated, his succesor Boril(the tsars cousin) married Kaloyan's wife, which might confirm her promiscuous reputation.
@ramflight
@ramflight 2 жыл бұрын
Unlikely. Marrying the wife of the former ruler is a move to consolidate power, not because his wife was promiscuous lol :D They even mention a similar situation in this video - Boniface marrying the wife of Isaac II, Margaret of Hungary, thereby ensuring the people's support, 05:55 min.

@@ramflight true, but there were many theories that Anna(the wife in question) was having an affair with Boril and the two of them were plotting the assassination of Kaloyan. Now, whether Kaloyan was actually assassinated by the plotters is unclear, it could have been one of the besieged as shown in the video. Unfortunately we do not know a lot about medieval Balkan history as many sources have been lost or destroyed by the Ottomans. So this is all in the realm of speculation.

Kaloyan is pronounced with the accent falling on the last syllable. KaloYAN. It's a slavicized form of the Greek Kalo Ioan, meaning Handsome Ioan. One of the leading theories for Kaloyan's murder was that it was done by a Cuman leader, by the name of Manaster, who was either participating in some Bulgarian courtly intrigue or was being bribed by the Greeks. Also, the portrait which was used in this video is based on a reconstruction of remains found near a church in Tarnovo, where later Asenevtsi royals were buried, however the remains have not been unequivocally confirmed to be that of the tsar Kaloyan. It is possible that they belong to a noble of the same name who was buried there more than a century later. There is a also a tower of the ruins of the Tarnovo citadel which is called the Baldwin tower, where the Latin Emperor died in imprisonment, as the story goes.

Although some contemporary Greek sources claim he was killed by his first general, probably he died from cardiac arrest, as there are not any proves for assassination plot. And the grave of Kaloyan is actually found. He has old injury on the skull. Probably that explains the sudden turn of his behavior. Also other contemporary Greek sources point that Kaloyan felt pain in the chest or head and then died. It is not mention here, but Kaloyan also defeated the Hungarian army and conquered Belgrade. This is perhaps the MOST-needed of all your series! This was a pivotal moment in the history of Europe, of Christendom, but also was a prelude to the Ottoman dominancy. And yet we never get to see what happened the day AFTER Constantinople fell in 1204. Sometimes you see a map of Europe in like 1215 and see "okay, so there was a "Latin" Kingdom for awhile," but it's unclear how successful the Latins were--until this video, I'd always thought they were quite powerful and could only be overthrown once the Byzantines took the better part of a century to regroup! But it seems now that they never fully conquered the Roman lands and had huge threats from all sides AND from within once they tried to turn sacking a city into running a country. Please, PLEASE keep making more of these! I want a play-by-play of everything that happens before Michael VIII takes back Constantinople! I've also love a "where are they now" segment about all the Latin lands that survived, apparently, all the way until after the Ottoman conquests.

The Greek language has always had a presence in the east even before the Roman conquests, Greek in its self was the secondary language of the empire at times even sharing the same status as Latin. The 4th crusade should be renamed the autocrusade since only Christians and no Muslims were harmed in the making of this video. 🤣

It's almost like the Crusades weren't just about showing faith and defending pilgrims and actually more about gaining power.

Fun fact. It is believed that while Baldwin was initially treated as a high valued prisoner by Kaloyan, the Bulgarian Tsar would kill him in a fit of rage, some say it was because Baldwin tried to make moves on Kaloyan's wife, others suggest she tried to seduce him but rejected her advances, thus leading to her feeling scorned and in retaliation went to her husband and accused Baldwin of attempted rape. Whatever was the case, after his demise it was believed Kaloyan turned Baldwin's skull into a drinking cup.

@@markolekic2504 What I believe this video highlights is that it wasn’t simply just the Sack of Constantinople in 1204 that became the beginning of the end for the Eastern Roman Empire it was all these battles and the devastation that came with it.
