Led by the determined Sultan Abd al-Malik, defeating the the Muslims would present the greatest challenge yet to the Portuguese overseas expansion...

Kholat, my tribe participated in this battle because it took place on their lands. They displayed great courage and ferocity against the enemy, which led the Sultan to take half of their horsemen and incorporate them into his army as a reward for their bravery.

It's amazing how dying sultan could personally rally his soldiers in a fierce battle. A true leader, I'd say.

The fact that morocco didn't fall to foreign rule between early 16th and 15th century is astonishing, that period knew civil wars and turmoils, and complete unstability.

I learned about this historic battle when I got curious about how and why Portugal was absorbed by Spain at one point and proceeded to do some research. It led me all the way to this battle, which decisively weakened the royal family and the country of Portugal, triggering succession crisis and civil wars, and ultimately allowing Spain the golden opportunity to exploit the situation and take over Portugal. On the other hand the battle strengthened the Moroccan Saadi regime which then began its, albeit brief, ascent to regional power status. Thanks a lot for bringing this pivotal battle to attention. This battle deserves to be much better known.

The battle of Alcácer-Quibir was a devastating moment in Portugal's history, but it had significant consequences. The victory of Felipe II of Spain allowed him to become king of Portugal, beginning the period of Iberian union. With the Iberian union, the Treaty of Tordesillas was annulled, which made Brazil's territorial expansion possible.

What a king "Abd al-Malik" was !!! Despite he knew he was dying of a severe disease , he put the faith on his man to fight for their lives and their beliefs, that triggered them to win the battle vs the christians and after the battle he dies accomplishing his destiny..... Imagine what would have happen if "Al Malik" was allied with the Ottomans in Algeria at that time....

Troops became disenchanted with the stalled crusade. Sound like every crusades .

Absolutely fascinating battle review , Sebastian and Abdal Malik , 2 badasses till the very end .

There were also Ottoman janissary soldiers and a small number of Turks in this war. Most likely, these janissaries were the soldiers with rifles. Because the main weapon of the Janissaries was the rifle (arquebus)

Only two kings...the Moroccan mercenary who came with the Portuguese was not a king at all, and the number of his men in the Battle of Wadi Al-Makhzen was 300 mercenaries, all of whom perished along with 80,000 to 100,000 Portuguese and their reckless king

Sebastião after the battle was uncertain since no body was buried and due to that, during the subsequent Iberian Union, a "prophecy" surged where on a misty night D. Sebastião would return to Portugal atop his white horse to liberate the country from Spanish rule.

Caesar: Strech the line, cavalry is used to tie down enemy cav, infantry charge, the 10th easily wins their engagement and carry the day. Enemy surrender.

Reminds of the Battle of Carrhae and the fall of Crassus. Similar tactics were used by the winning and losing sides.

The tragic thing about King Sebastian is that he had been a good king before this dumb disastrous campaign. He reformed thr army to match the Spanish tercios, built hospitals for the poor, made some good reforms and genuinely cared about the well being of the average person . There was genuine hope that he would save Portugal's future, sadly he had also been raised by Jesuit priests who put bad ideas about crusading in his head and doomed him and his nation. Even though Portugal reclaimed its independence part of the country's soul died in Alcacer Quibir never to be recovered.

A great perspective of a moment of significance in the Portuguese expansion. It was the end of the most advanced Empire.

Minor tactical error! Sebastian's best strategy here was to form a cohesive line as the terrain provides difficult flanking moves.His better trained and equipped infantry could theorectically hold off many waves.Victory still seems impossible so a stalemate was the only option he should take.

Imagine you're a young man and you just became king of a country, only to go off to invade your neighbour and lose your first battle and die. Strategically and tactically, Sebastian was a terrible commander who made every mistake in the book.

Feel like Sebastian tried to go a bridge too far here. As had he stayed near the coast and besieged the remaining none held Portuguese cities on the coast, would remain close to supply line and reinforcements and make enemy come to him. By plunging recklessly into interior in pursuit of decisive battle, gives enemy advantage, which the morrocans used expertly to gather a huge army and prepare tactics to blunt the effectiveness of the enemy’s main battle winning weapons.

Most of the crusader army of 1578, consisted of 125,000 men, was not all frol Portugual, but rather a third of it was Spanish, sent by Philip II the King of Spain, who is the uncle of Sebastian, King of Portugal in exchange for Sebastian marrying one of Philip daughters and giving Spain a third of the spoils of the campaign and a third of the coasts and ports of Morocco ..also There were a large number of Italians and Germans in the Crusader army of 1578
