My ears hurt from the mispronounced names and some of the facts. The battle didn't decide who conquered New Zealand.NZ didn't become conquered but the rival factions merged under a treaty(NOT WAITANGI, but a second treaty for this war) Cameron didn't have the Pa surrounded, if he did, he would have seen that flag and hit his own men. When they entered, they saw the Maori trying to flee. When the Maori were spotted, they turned back and greatly weakened the enemy forces.

Tauranga (pronounce vowels like Japanese and Pacific island languages.... To spell English words which sound most similar that can help pronounce Tauranga could be "toe- rung- ah" but roll the r with a flick of the tounge) the 3 tribes in Tauranga are Ngati-Ranginui, Ngai-Te-Rangi and Ngati-Pukenga so I forgive you for making the common mistake of confusing the first two names with each other because they sound similar

Nagga tiranggeeey??? It's Nga Te Rangi (pronounced Nhah Tee Rang-i) Gate Pa was part of the Tauranga Campaign and the objective was to suppressed the rebellious tribes in the greater Tauranga region, not 'conquer New Zealand'. The British achieved this after a crushing victory at Te Ranga caused most of the tribes to seek terms. An artillery barrage not seen again until the Great War??? There were only 17field pieces and a heavy naval gun firing for around 8 hours.

Judging by the accent, I'd say the narrator is from the Younee-ted Starts of Aymeer-eeker. Perhaps from the city of Shy-kay-goo, Lows-arn-gheh-less, or Neh-uw-yoh-rek. Certainly he doesn't come from anywhere where there are sources for checking how to say Maori names.

yes and no, the Brits failed to defeat the enemy, though technically they won because at the time it was the army who controlled the land that was fought over. Yes the Brits forces them to flee but they got a mauling. It is the same at the battle of bunker hill, though at that battle the Brits did not panic, just kept coming till they drove off the Americans and took the battlefield. So one could argue in 19th century terms it as a British win. It is now considered fashionable to give the victory to the mouris.

Mmm whats the technicality of when a battle starts and a battle ends? It seems like the British held the ground at the end but took a lot more casualties. If anything it would be a draw.

the english had superior numbers and weapons, but used all their mortar ammo and had to then advance. the maori weren't getting hit, they had built underground bunkers. they were waiting until the english were inside where they could engage the best most dominant military in the world at close quarters where their guns were no longer an advantage and their formations were scattered its how they dealt with any invader. they would build a Pa, force the attackers to assault a defended position, enabling them to fight close quarters which they were better at. after repelling an attacking force they would retreat and build another one. this caused the attacking forces to continuously have to regroup and start a new battle against a new heavily defended position each time. they could build a Pa quickly and easily out of the earth and were the best trench warfare fighters ever seen if it wasn't for superior numbers and weapons, the maori would've won almost every battle i expect......and i would'nt have been born to a maori dad and a pakeha mum :)

This is what happens when you do not have a pronunciation guide with what you're reading. I completely understand why the pronunciation was as it was but I honestly thought I was going to watch a battle on Japanese soil.

I giggled all through the video, with the pronunciation of te reo. BUT, thankyou for sharing the information using map form. It's helpful. (Y) The reason they won... simple. The arrogance of the English, believing they were more intelligent, superior and supreme over the natives of the land. ;)
