To be honest, Vlad the Impaler will have a better story (if he is portrayed as Vlad the Impaler not as Vlad the Vampire) and he is more popular. Also in that period in Hungary was Matia Corvinus and in Moldavia Stephan the great, all of them were so fucking badasses, and i find those guys better generals than Mihai. The intrigue and betrayals will make game of thrones to be seen as child play (Vlad was nice, Stephan and Matia were assholes).

@Calin calinn Voievod used to be a cneaz that was elected in times of peril to fight an enemy. This word was adopted from old slavic. In Romanian it means Prince (Warrior-Prince). The word for king, in Romanian, is another old slavic word, Crai, Krai or Kraj. The word Crai was never used to identify a Romanian ruler, just the foreign ones. The Crai of Buda (King of Hungary). The Crai of the Port(The Turkish Sultan). For their own rulers the Romanians used the title "Mare Voievod" (Grate Voievod). This title became the name of the Heir to the throne, during the Romanian Kingdom, under Carol II. Amusingly, the name of the heir was also Mihai.

10.000 Subs With No Videos, well said. But I think that even if he hadn’t been betrayed, mihai would still have been defeated eventually, because he lacked the resources to resist his rivals. Although he was ambitious and courageous, he was cruel and overconfident and his people suffered under his rule. But when an historical figure is important to a nation identity (in mihai case, Romania), they are often portrayed as one sided good guys, while in reality, the situation is almost always more complex

Francisco MM Interesting points indeed. As the narrator said I think in the long term the people would suffer much more under the rule of the Ottomans or any other power, as they would’ve been exploited for money, being given heavy taxation perpetually. Obviously no one knows what went through Mihai’s head, but I would like to think that him taxing his people was an emergency reaction to the fact that it was only a matter of time before he was invaded, which he then was, and then when things became more stable he would return to status quo

The Balkans from the peloponnesian war, to Alexander the Great, to the Roman conquest of Greece, the eastern Romans and the rise of Bulgaria, then to the almost 500 years (overall) of conflict with the Ottoman Empire. (Actually I think I got that information from a misleading Ottoman documentary) P.s. of course I know about the Cumans, but a... the rulers of Wallachia were never described in documents as Cumans (but Vlachs), there was probably a marriage between a Cuman noble and Vlach , from which probably the Draculesti / Basarabs emerged. @@williamkartatar4759 Well thanks, very interesting information which I've missed until now. But a ... yea , Romanian is not a turcik language, and Bassarab means absolutely nothing in Romanian, its a family name, a big historical House, and also geographic regions (like the Basarabia aka Republic of Moldova today). But yes I did know that its a Turcik word, meaning leader, or how you said it "grand prince-nobleman". Also Boyar / Boier (romanian) means nothing specific.. doesnt have any other use, its just a representation of a medieval noble. We actually also have the word "nobil" in Romanian, but this was not a title used in medieval times. But from what I know, "Boyar" was used in many countries in the East. And thus ends the story of the last of the Draculeans. Mihai the Brave was the last in a long line of Wallachian voivodes from the House of Drăculești, a house thus named because its founder - Vlad II Dracul - had been a member of the Medieval Order of the Dragon. In medieval times, "drac" was the Romanian name given to dragons (and devils), though the meaning changed over time to mean devil only. Centuries before George R.R. Martin thought up House Targaryen for his books, history gave us a real House of the Dragon. Also, Vlad III Țepeș aka Vlad the Impaler aka Vlad Drăculea was also a part of this House. So now you know where the origin of the name Dracula comes from :)

Peace was not fashionable back in the day. If you didn't have Mongols or Turks invading, come spring you'd fight one of your neighbors. Or your brother. Europeans kept warring just to keep fit. Mihai was the kind of leader and general that would not even shy from attacking the "ottoman capital" as in one of the first episodes he came really close to Constantinopole, but didnt receive any support. Instead he had to spend the rest of his time on this rock... fighting his other christian neighbors that saw a strong unified Romanian territory as a threat rather than something good. While he was brilliant on the battlefield, he couldn't have possibly won back then against all these political schemes, he did do well for a long time but, its way too complicated, the time was not right yet. But he literally created a Blueprint variant of the future. He recreated the old Dacia for a brief moment ...like a little drop in an ocean , insignificant at first...yet the ripples would continue to impress and inspire Romanians and possibly other peoples as well, including our neighbors with which we are mostly in very good relations. RIP Michael the Brave, Duke and... King. RIP Mihai Viteazul.

@ww ww Your English is great, don't worry. If Austria lets him be independent, then there's not a very strong argument as to why they should help Michael. The region might fall to the Ottomans or the Polish. Or he might find help from the Polish or Ottomans and join their team, ultimately turning against Austria. By making sure it's under them, Austria protects itself by making sure they won't be joining or falling to the other team and it generates revenue and manpower for Austria.

Truly an awesome series! It really made me appreciate and respect Michael. It's great that you are spreading the knowledge about historical figures that aren't widely known. For me though the bast part was that it's the first anglophone video I know of that mentions the Chancellor and Hetman Jan Zamoyski. He was a fascinating figure too. He was a politician first and kinda an intellectual known for his oratory skills. Thus when he was made the Great Crown Hetman in 1581, without previously serving as the Field Hetman or having extensive military experience in general, it was viewed by many as a purely political nomination. A popular joke even suggested that he would be more fit to become a priest (using a derogatory term "klecha") but he turned out to be a competent commander, first making a great team with King Stephen Bathory, later doing pretty well on his own, as we could see in this very video. Fun fact: a major part of his legacy is creating from scratch the private city of Zamość, a pearl of Polish late Renaissance, the little "Padua of the North" which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List.

Czytałeś opracowanie D. Skorupy "Bitwa pod Bukowem 20 października 1600r." zamieszczonego w zbiorze Staropolska sztuka wojenna, tom V pod red. M. Nagielskiego? Opis tego historyka, bazującego na bibliografii zawierającej polskie i rumuńskie opracowania bardzo się różni od tego co zaprezentował autor filmu. Stosunek sił 2:1 i brak artylerii w armii Michała?

13:27 STARINA NOVAK (Romanian: Baba Novac, meaning "old Novak") was a Serb hajduk (brigand and rebel) who distinguished himself in many battles against the Ottoman Empire. Novak was born to a lower-class family in 1530s in the village of Poreč (today ‪‎DonjiMilanovac‬, ‪Serbia‬), Ottoman Empire. Novak's parents on his father side were Serb, and according to a legend, his mother was Romanian, a descendant of the Basarab family. He studied at the monastery of Poreč and was fluent in both Serbian and Old Slavonic. He also spoke Romanian and Greek. He began his career as a hajduk at an early age after he was imprisoned and beaten by Turks. At some point he had to take refuge in the forests of Timočka krajina where he quickly learned the use of weapons and military from a harambaš Hajduk. He soon formed his četa (band of hajduks) and started a violent fight against the Turks. He joined the forces of Michael the Brave in Banat with 2000 Serbian hajduks for the liberation of the Vlach lands and was made captain of the Brigands. His forces participated in the seizure of Călugăreni, liberated Târgovişte, Bucharest and Giurgiu in October 1595. He also fought the Turks in Bulgaria and liberated Plevna, Rahovo, Vratsa, Vidin and Florentin. He was accused of treason by ally-turned-rival Giorgio Basta and was sent to the Hungarian authorities in Cluj (Kolozsvár), sentenced to burning. He is venerated as a Serb hero in the Serb epic poetry and in Romanian tales. A tower in Cluj-Napoca (Baba Novak Tower) and streets in ‪Bucharest‬, ‪‎Brasov‬ and ‪Belgrade‬ are named after him. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obJyp9N01KuxZ58.html

Definitely lacked political sense or something. Battling his way through all this to fail to achieve his aim. And didn't do much for the state of the local population either. They weren't happy about the taxation (fair enough)... and great Mihai made it all far worse.

Great end to an awesome series. Maybe do a series on Albrecht von Wallenstein, from his expulsion of the Protestants from Bohemia to his assassination in 1635.

I would like to thank you for making this, we were always ruled by other empires be it Roman, Austrian, Ottoman etc or controlled indirectly through vassals, me and my people would like thank you for covering our history, as a lot of people see us as just another unimportant eastern European nation.
