Cut from Japanese movie "Ten to Chi to" (Heaven and Earth) 1990.
The battles of Kawanakajima (川中島の戦い Kawanakajima no tatakai) were fought in the Sengoku period of Japan between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province in the plain of Kawanakajima, "the island between the rivers", in the north of Shinano Province. The location is in the southern part of the present-day city of Nagano. Five major battles took place there: Fuse in 1553, Saigawa in 1555, Uenohara in 1557, Hachimanbara in 1561, and Shiozaki in 1564. The best known and most severe among them was fought on October 18, 1561, and was only fought in the heart of the Kawanakajima plain, thus being the "battle of Kawanakajima". The battles were fought after Shingen conquered Shinano, expelling Ogasawara Nagatoki and Murakami Yoshikiyo, who subsequently turned to Kenshin for help. The battles became one of the most cherished tales in Japanese military history, the epitome of Japanese chivalry and romance, mentioned in epic literature, woodblock printing and movies.

The Uesugi under Uesugi Kenshin are portrayed very theatrically at the very end ... the Takeda forces open a way of honor for him. It is beautiful but not accurate to say the least. His entire force had to fight its way out of that trap that Takeda Shingen had conceived of prior to the battle. That was very costly for Uesugi Kenshin. The Takeda army was not the only army tremendously weakened at this battle.

Shingen planned an envelopment and an ambush against Kenshin. The problem is that kenshin found out about the ambush and went straight to Shingen. This kawanakajima battle was extremely costly for both sides. Something like 30 percent casualties both sides. A literal bloodbath.

This movie portrays Takeda Shingen as a fool (while he was one of, if not the greatest strategists Japan would ever see), his men weak (while the Takeda cavalry was the greatest in Japan at the time), and Uesugi Kenshin as a cold, calculated killer (In reality, Kenshin had just come out of being a devout Buddhist monk).

In reality he is, Kenshin is also famous for his brutality and extensive massacre, internal purge and slave trading, though it is a norm for Sengoku Daimyo to trade slaves, but Kenshin and Shigen came out on top as the biggest slavers, but it is true that Shigen is not fool, both are expedient ruler who does not hesitate to loot, pillage and sold captives from conquered territory, in Takeda clan's documents captives are referred as human goods, and they were part of the booty during the designated three day loot and pillage period after battle, in which soldiers can freely loot the surroundings of battlefield.

Japanese army would likely to lose due to inferior armour and weaponary (Japanese during the early Muromachi period were still not very accustomed to long polearms like pike, while the prominent naginata and nagamaki are not suited for formations, unlike halberd, which is a major weakness), and the lack of heavy cavalry would be devastating, in terms of firearms, european army would have better artillery but Japanese would likely to have more explosives, but even for late Sengoku army it would br difficult to face contemporary European army dur to the lack of cavalry and field artillery, while the Japanese yari tactics are basically useless against pike formations, the only aspect that Japanese army can compete with were muskets, but to be fair, musket by itself are not very effective, and one thing about Sengoku army is the low morale as most soldier were accustomed to fleeing even before battle, it was not uncommon at the time to see an army of 10000 men when call to arms reduced to few thousand because the enemy was said to be outnumbering.

@@fsdds1488 i agree on early muromachi period when army formations and tactics with great numbers not developed much. but in late sengoku period or 16th century,i think probably only major factor is terrain(in japan japanese would win,in europe european woud win). in close combat it would be pretty much even no european melee weapon can penetrate japanese armour and same with japanese.both armours have almost similar weak points and method of killing a knight and samurai are almost same(subdue your opponent with grappling,find weak spot,take him out with dagger?knife?) europe has artillery and advantage because of more experience and development but in mountanious japanese terrain transporting it and deploying it to effective position is very difficult thats why japan didnt use much artillery(and i admit they dont have raw material for that so they have it with trade) same with cavalry(japan s geography is not much suitable for it) sure,japanese had cavalry but not in great numbers(latest research says takeda cavalry is kinda myth they exists but not in great numbers)and development of gunpowder ended cavalry superiority in europe right? and actually japanese are more advantageous with arquebus(its controversial i guess,both sides claim they are the superior)most of the japan is rainy and japanese arquebus are usable in rainy weathers or atleast more durable to rain. by numbers japan slightly outnumbers european army even though europe has more population since japan would be in at least 200 years of civil war so almost every peasent has combat experience(not necessarily in battlefield,most of them independently fought against other villages for survival,if there is a war nearby peasants arm themselves and hunt the defeated warriors for loot) i know europe is also at war but time to time some parts are safe and peaceful what im trying to say is geography decides who wins in general.(sorry for bad english)

Mid to late 1400s? Not even a fair match. The Japanese would simply get stomped by heavy European cavalry while not having counter-meassures like the English longbow or pike formations.
@Joseph-yt4ir
@Joseph-yt4ir Жыл бұрын
My questions are these: "What era Samurai Army are you talking about?" When I imagine the Japanese art of war at its highest form, I picture the late Sengoku period. If you put a force from that era up against a European army from the mid to late 1400's, I think they might fair better than the other commenters give them credit for. It would not take them long to recognize that the Knights had superior armor, and while that might win the 1st battle for the Europeans, I doubt it could win them the war. There are a number of noted battles where the Japanese employed field-works to negate the advantages of cavalry, creating obstacles behind which arquebusiers and bowmen could cut them down. The other thing to consider is that while movies such as this focus on mounted samurai with yari, a Daimyo could undoubtedly field a sizable force of mounted archers instead. Mounted archers had long been the bane of European Knights, as they could easily evade their charges until the heavy warhorses were blown (out of breath and exhausted). I admit that 14th Century armor is superior at stopping arrows to what the knights of the Crusade-era had, but I would also submit that Japanese longbows had more penetrative power (though certainly not as much as an English longbow). Bullets, however, are another matter... "Where is the European army from?" Not all European armies are identical - an army from 14th Century France is different from 14th Century Sweden, etc, etc. Personally, I think that facing an English army, with its many units of longbows, would prove devastating for the Samurai. But the last thing that must be considered is the critical issue of morale. The Knights were brave (sometimes to the level of foolhardiness) but most of the infantry in the typical European army of the period were ill-trained and unreliable troops. I think the fact that the morale of the Samurai armies was higher over-all, is best illustrated by the very casualty counts reported from this battle (if they can be believed). The Takeda force is said to have suffered 72% killed or wounded, the Uesugi 62%. For a battle where the majority of the losses would have been inflicted in melee, that's appallingly high. To fight on that long without breaking would have been inconceivable for a European force of that period.
