The Floating Castle (のぼうの城, Nobō no Shiro) is a 2012 Japanese historical-drama film directed by Shinji Higuchi and Isshin Inudo, starring Mansai Nomura, and adapts Ryō Wada's novel (2007) of the same name. Set in feudal Japan, the film is based on the Siege of Oshi and depicts the struggle of Oshi's villagers in defending their fortress against Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign against the Hojo clan. Against insurmountable odds, Narita Nagachika, the fortress's castellan, leads a group of 500 men against 20,000 men led by Ishida Mitsunari, part of Toyotomi clan's greater army of 20,000 samurai.

Hojo(Hohjoh/北条) was not a clan but a family name, and belonged to the Taira(平) clan or Hei-shi(平氏). Japanese clan name was mostly given by the Emperor. But, in the late ancient age, same clans were everywhere. So, in order to distinguish a family from the same clans, family name was created, based on the place name where they lived. Hohjoh Sakyohdayuh Taira-no Ujinao(北条 左京大夫 平 氏直) was the name of the last head of the Hohjoh family; Hohjoh/北条 was his family name. Sakyohdayuh左京大夫 was a Kemyoh/仮名, a name commonly called, that usually showed his nominal status in the court of the Emperor's. Taira/平 was a Sei/姓, clan name, that always followed by a postposition of "no" which connect in between nouns. So "no" can be a marker to distinguish the clan name. Ujinao/氏直 was his Jitsumyoh/実名, his true/real name or Imina/忌み名/諱, his name must be hidden.

Yeah Hojo are my favourite Sengoku clan to be honest, a lot of it because of how benevolent they were compared to other clans. Hojo Ujitsuna is said to have established a reasonable tax rate and financially supported temples and shrines across his domain, he also rebuilt Kamakura after it was basically burnt to the ground during the chaos of the Muromachi and early Sengoku periods. Also like his wife was said to be from the original Hojo clan who ruled the Kamakura Shogunate as regents so from Ujiyasu onwards, the later Hojo were ruled by someone who's had the blood of both Hojo clans in him.
@novrinkov00536 ай бұрын
There were many other benevolent daimyo. You guys only know famous fighting daimyos, so you make that mistake. If tkey lose the trust of the people and accumulate dissatisfaction, they will not cooperate in times of war. Citizens of good daimyo volunteer to cooperate in times of war. If the people were to suffer due to bad politics, the peasants would often rebel. Daimyo did not only cause suffering to the people. If they only do such stupid politics, the country won't last long. The basics of governing people is not to accumulate anger among them. War cannot be waged without the cooperation of farmers. If daimyo torture them, the peasants will flee to other territories. Without farmers and people, there would be no way to go to war with other daimyo. Gaining the trust and cooperation of the people is the basis of being a daimyo.
@novrinkov00536 ай бұрын
(Tsuneie Kikkawa) After being surrounded by Hideyoshi army, he committed seppuku on the condition that he would help his soldiers and people. (Singen Takeda) Takeda carried out wonderful flood control for the people of his territory. (Ujiharu Oda) Even when the castle was occupied, people fled the territory because they only recognized Ujiharu as the ruler of the territory. When Ujiharu regained the territory, all the people returned. (Mitsunari Ishida) Records show that Mitsunari also practiced good government and was admired by the people of his territory. Mitsunari Ishida wrote seven oaths. It is written to the land inspector to be kind to farmers. It also says that even if there are farmers you hate, you should survey the land fairly. (Nobunaga Oda) Nobunaga allowed the people of his territory to do business freely(rakuichi rakuza). Until then, people could not do business unless they belonged to a group or paid taxes. The checkpoints were abolished and the people of the territory could move freely. Nobunaga enriched the people of his territory and was well liked. Yoshiaki Mogami was also loved by the people of the territory. There are many other stories like this that were loved by the people of the territory. Daimyo were not only fearsome warriors. It is inevitable that cruel episodes occur during times of war. If they had been born in peace time, they would not have shown such cruel side. If they are not strong, other daimyo will attack them and their people will starve. Sometimes they had to do ruthless things to protect their people and vassals.
Something film makers don't know: reality. I blame fanboys.
