The numbers to this battle were actually 4,400 British Regulars against 1,900 French Regulars and 1,500 Militia.

Battalion : + the French arrogantly celebrated the victory the day before. Most of the soldiers were still drunk on the battlefield. (that tale is told since several generations in my family) The calculation might be right if U include the Algonquin & Iroquois allies.

@@phillipbouchard5083 There must've been a lot more militia, I remember reading a book wherein it did state the regulars were called off to France to assist with fighting there. Prussia, France, Britain and Austria at war. And Spain was gonna join. Real risky eh, then.

@@heavenlytroopers4081 Where does it say about 10,000 native American allies? I'm doing a paper on the seige of Quebec at the moment and the total number of French troops is between 12-17,000 in total with about 500 native Americans and 3-4000 regular troops. The British force was 9000 but Saunders navy numbered around 18,000. At the actual battle there was about 4500 British with slightly more French though much of Montcalms forces were militia as he had placed most of his regular troops in the command of Bougainville.

I was thinking about this today, and I came to conclude that if the French had maintained all of their 13,000 troops near Beauport or Quebec, their chances to win were there. As the advantage Britain had was the ability to deploy troops at a point of their choice. By spreading thin the French troops, they negated the advantage of numerical superiority. Yes, Britain could have just sieged and waited a few months until France surrendered. But there was little to gain to check where Britain landed its troops, rather than assemble all troops together, and guard the city of Quebec.

This is just an overview of numbers. In fact the British had an army composed of professionnal soldiers and the french had a few soldiers with a core of militia and some natives. The french army had multiple chances to win the war but wasted them. They sent dummy ships to burn the english fleet by night but they lighted them up too soon, giving enough time to english sailors to repel them before they did any damage. Then they sent a 1000 volunteers in a night attack to destroy the english canons who were raining fire on Quebec from Levis but the french militians got scared and started shooting at shadows and panicked. They tought that british heard the turmoil and aborted. In fact the canons were protected by 100 soldiers who never woke up and would have been overun if the french had came through with the attack. And then nobody will ever know why Montcalm attacked the english on the plaines d'Abraham, as his backup was coming from behind the english forces, he had the high ground, a fortress to hide behind him and the english army had came through climbing a very steep slope during the night and it would have been difficult for them to resupply or to flee. Wolfe gambled and won. Wolf died in the ultimate battle but he had written that should he fail at capturing Quebec, he would send his soldiers to burn all the unprotected farms and slaughter civilians, to starve the frenchs.

By winning the Battle of Quebec, the English won Canada but ultimately lost the 13 Colonies. I don't know if they won on the exchange. What is certain, that the British government lacked common sense and foresight, but they were blinded by an anti Catholicism and an exacerbated nationalism, they wanted at all costs to do battle with France. In the mid-eighteenth century from the English point of view, remaining at peace with France was out of the question, as English superiority was evident in America, whether in demographic, military or naval terms. Remained in peace, was equated with treason. The reality was that the French were not a serious threat to the English colonies because Canada, unlike the 13 colonies, was sparsely populated, and the royal navy, which dominated the sea, could at any time isolated Canada by blocking it. help that France could send. On the contrary, the French had their uses in America, they were like a scarecrow! In so much war, by isolated raids, (which had no influence on the course of the war) in the company of Indian auxiliaries, they put pressure on the colonists by spreading death and terror, constantly reminding the colonists that they needed the crown. This terror allowed the unity of the settlers behind the king. As long as the French were there, the settlers depended on the king for their protection, the fear they inspired and the military dependence of the settlers ensured the complete loyalty of the settlers. You make this fear disappear, you also make their dependence and their loyalty disappear. Because no longer having a French threat, the king and his soldiers were no longer useful to the colonists, on the contrary even by prohibiting the colonists from settling beyond the Appalachians (royal proclamation of 1763), by attributing the valley of the 'ohio to the French of Canada and by claiming taxes to cover the expenses of the war, the crown had become an obstacle and an unnecessary burden that they no longer needed to bear. If the British had not gone to war against France or if Wolf had lost the Battle of Quebec it is almost certain that there would not have been American independence and the thirteen colonies would have remained English colonies like Canada or Australia until the beginning of the 20th century.
