After the Battle of the Wilderness, Ulysses S. Grant, George Meade, and the Union Army of the Potomac disengaged with Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and began to move toward Spotsylvania Court House. What resulted was the bloodiest battle of the Overland Campaign. In this episode, more troops rush to the battlefield and Union Corps Commander John Sedgwick is killed.

It sounds like Grant was staying focused on the strategic situation, while pretty much letting Meade determine the tactical aspects of the engagement.

It would so seem that Warren was not proving himself to be the best choice for commander of the V Corps, and he was an engineer, and like McClellan, was by no means aggressive. Looking forward to the rest of the battle and the campaign.

Sedgwick's death used to make me sad when I read about it. Meade felt horrible because his last exchange with Sedgwick was an argument. Even Robert E Lee was saddened at the news.

I've always thought of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania as discrete, separate battles, but it seems it was all just one long running fight.

It truly was. Doing this animation, I'm more of the impression that the entire Overland Campaign was one battle and the battlefield was hundreds of miles.

Honestly I don’t think I’ve heard much about this battle since I read Chamberlain’s book many years ago. I was always aware of it and read snippets here and there in CWT and MHQ.

Until now I've always felt that Warren was very harshly treated by Grant and Sheridan after the Battle of Five Forks, relieving him of command and effectively halting his military career. Now that I learn how slow he was at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, I can understand how that happened. He had a history and while what happened after Five Forks may have been an overreaction on Sheridan and Grant's part, it didn't come out of the blue.

Exactly, Warren turned in poor performances and sometimes outright refused orders to do simple maneuvers.

The earlier Battle of Fredericksburg, where he was Commander of the Army of the Potomac, and the later Battle of the Crater in the Petersburg campaign are what brought down his reputation.

So about that Eustis fellow, was he properly shot for dereliction of duty, during combat!? Dismissed at least?
@spacehonky6315
@spacehonky6315 25 күн бұрын
Haha, nope. Henry Eustis was moved to a different brigade for a month but resigned in June 1864 when his "health" problem (opium addiction) prevented him from performing his duties. He was hired to teach at Harvard and died in 1885 as the Dean of Engineering and Sciences.

@spacehonky6315 incredible. A drunk and a junkie. In charge of men in battle. Thank you.

@@Necron990 I wonder if whoever reported his drunkenness might have mistaken the symptoms for opium stupor. Or maybe it was professionally more acceptable to be drunk as a skunk instead of high as a kite? 🤦. I got all that info from wiki, and no, I didn't check every reference listed. It did say he graduated first in his class at West Point, and taught there after graduation. Very bright fellow. Sorta. Except that whole opiate addiction. Now I'm curious what really happened. Did he defeat his monster, or did he struggle forever while teaching at Harvard?

@spacehonky6315 a shot or 2 before battle, 1 can understand. But being shit faced and or high on top of that? Inexcusable as a senior officer. His staff had a duty to relieve him of command, not follow his orders
@spacehonky6315
@spacehonky6315 23 күн бұрын
@@Necron990 of course! I'm surprised he even made it another month. I forgot if it was Sedgwick or Meade that found the Eustis brigade in shambles? If Sedgwick, it's understandable why the Eustis retirement was delayed since Sedgwick's head was apparently the size of an elephant that day, and he ended up shot in the face a few hours later. Worst final last words in history. Smh🤦
