Kings and Generals

6 жыл бұрын

After a long discussion, we decided to start making documentaries on the modern wars, and the first one we are going to cover will be the battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943 that was fought between Germany and its allies and USSR within the World War II. This battle is considered one of the most decisive in the second World War, as it worsened the situation of the Wehrmacht and allowed the Soviet Red Army to start counterattacking all over the Eastern Front. This battle is also symbolic, as it was one of the rare battles where the egos of two rulers - Hitler and Stalin clashed.
We are planning to release more documentaries covering the modern conflicts, so stay tuned.

Its wild how in the west we talk about the encirclement at Dunkirk at the beginning of the war, and D-day and the battle of the bulge near the end as huge events. Meanwhile the eastern front was just dozens battles back to back far more brutal and desperate and on a much larger scale.

@@Rostic1983 Nice generalization numb nuts. The US would have joined eventually if Pearl Harbor hadn't happened. The USSR couldn't be allowed to take all of what Germany was in control of. Because they definitely wouldn't have given most of it back. The US did nearly all of the work in the Pacific. The Brits abandoned their colonies and the colonies wouldn't have been able to go on the offensive due to a lack of military structure.

“The street is no longer measured by meters but by corpses ... Stalingrad is no longer a town. By day it is an enormous cloud of burning, blinding smoke; it is a vast furnace lit by the reflection of the flames. And when night arrives, one of those scorching howling bleeding nights, the dogs plunge into the Volga and swim desperately to gain the other bank. The nights of Stalingrad are a terror for them. Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; only men endure.” ― Max Hastings, Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945

Honestly, Zhukov is such a badass. If you read his entire life, it's one badass episode after another. The guy annihilated the Japanese at Khalkin Gol, defended Leningrad, encircled the 6th Army at Stalingrad, pushed the Wehrmacht all the way to Berlin, basically pioneered armored tactics in the USSR, was probably the only guy to stand up to Stalin and call him an idiot to his face and live, and he basically dragged Beria out of power after Stalin died.

There's a myth among German generals that said Hitler's from Bohemia while in fact he's from Austria, Paul von Hindenburg and Paulus are the most examples to call Hitler like that, maybe that's because Hitler's birth place somehow have the same name with a small town in Bohemia where Von Hindenburg ever cross during Austro-Prussian war, i think that's where the mistake came from.

@@antoinemozart243 Germany lost 27,074 dead during the battle of France,(basic wikipedia) and took control of France. Fighting for Pavlov's house took 60 days of heavy fighting in Stalingrad and Germans did not take it. One can argue about the exact casualties that Germans sustained, fighting for a very strategic point, losing 30k soldiers in 60 days is reasonable, so point made by me in original message is valid. Germans lost more soldiers trying to capture one building (Pavlov's house) than they lost in the entire French campaign.

@@antoinemozart243 Entire French campaign was won by Germans in 46 days. 58 days the same Germans were not able to take one extremely important building in Stalingrad. if you would like, i can quote German generals and their opinion about French army and campaign, but it would make it even worse. When Keitel was signing capitulation he was shocked to see French, so much so, that he said:" oh, these guys also won?" I do not mean any disrespect to people of France, but to the rest of Allies their army was as useful as Italian army to Germans. Wikipedia is a basic source that anyone can have access to and there you can find in reference the source and check it. Point why i used it. I can get numbers from books i have, whether it would be Tippelskirh, Liddle Gard, or soviet historians. I can through in opinion of German Hans von Luck who was fighting on both fronts. And so on and so forth. However, not to be bias, can you please enlight me on the German losses in campaign of 1940 in France as well as sources.
@maximmatkovsky6490
@maximmatkovsky6490 3 жыл бұрын
@@antoinemozart243 That is not the answer to how much Germans lost in 1940 France campaign according to your sources. I have provided a commentary that made sense, even backed it up with source which you did not like, offered plenty of other source choices, as if this is not youtube but university of some sort. During this you called me idiot and ignorant, (while not stating credentials, so wiki basics shall be ok) i offered you to provide information with some sources which would prove me wrong, instead you gave me excuses that only are not making any difference as i am not comparing whole of French campaign to whole of Soviet campaign, i was comparing and talking about entire French campaign and just an episode of one of the most fierce, long, massive and pivotal battles of entire war battle of Stalingrad. My point was proven by me. So i suggest that you either provide what asked for as well as an appology for personal statements. My original point: Germans lost more soldiers fighting for Pavlov's house than in entire French campaign (of 1940). Here you go, prove me with sources that Germans lost more than 100k soldiers killed that campaign i guess.

Your graphics never looked as good as they do in this vid. It has such an immersive feel that the vid drew me in, despite me not being particularly interested in Stalingrad (as it has been covered to death before). Great job! I've read a book by Saul David before on military disasters and it pointed out that the Stalingrad offensive was supposed to be just a sideshow for their attack as their main objective are the Baku oilfields as Germany was facing shortages of it. So the attack was more economical rather than tactical in nature. That Hitler forced his generals to change their plans to concentrate on Stalingrad speaks more as to how he's starting to lose touch with reality by not concentrating on strategic targets that served him well on their earlier victories. Propaganda also had a lot to do with the attack, as levelling the city of your rival will make a great propaganda piece. In the end, it proved to be Hitler's undoing.
@KingsandGenerals
@KingsandGenerals 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, my friend! Indeed, the fact that 2-3 armies were kept on Don is a proof that the attack on Stalingrad was not a definite goal. Taking Baku and the Caucasus was important not only due to the oil, but because the Soviets were receiving most of the Lend-Lease via Iran, so cutting off this lifeline was important for Germany.
@nikolalesov8359
@nikolalesov8359 6 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with Saul David. The Germans made mistakes during this operation, but that was not the concentration of force against Stalingrad instead of against Baku. There were not so many troops of the Red Army there as in Stalingrad. So if the Germans were to push towards the mountains with their main forces, the mass of the Red Army in Stalingrad would of swipe the smaller force in front of them, and the main German forces would of ended in the biggest encirclement in the history - Black Sea and Kaspian Sea at their sides, the defenders in the mountains in front of them, and the mass of the rest of the Red Army at their back. The result would of been even worse than the clear defeat at Stalingrad! :)

Hermann Goering, chief of the Luftwaffe, said at Nuremberg trials when asked about Germany not using chemical weapons, that they didn't use them, because their army logistics heavily relied on horses and any retaliation from Allied forces would drastically reduce their capabilities. Some extra facts I feel should've been in the video. First, Army Group B had from July to November 150,000 casulties but only got 100,000 replacements. Meanwhile Army Group Centre had 146,000 casulties, while getting 192,000 replacements. In fact all Army Groups did the get enough men to replace losses, except Army Group B. Across the entire Eastern Front there was more replacements than there was losses, but not by much. Meaning that Army Group B and all other Army Groups could've replaced every lost man, but instead Army Group B got shafted. A net loss of 50,000 men would've been quite significant. Secondly, in mid August, Army Groups A and B had 11 division taken away, 6 Infantry divisions, 1 Jäger division, 2 Motorized division and 2 Panzer divisions, only to be replaced with 3 Italian divisions and 4 Romanian divisions with 8 more divisions due in early September. Having a net loss of 50,000 men and losing 11 divisions only to be replaced with inadequate and fewer divisions would have been a major blow to Army Groups A and B fighting capabilities. Bonus fact. It wasnt Göring that convinced Hitler that the 6th Army could be supplied by air. Because at the time he was chairing a petroleum conference in Karinhall. Hitler as the Chief of Staff of the Luftwaffe, General Hans Jeschonnek, if it was possible and Jeschonnek said yes, as long as the Luftwaffe retined control of foward airfields. But during a telephone conversation with General von Richthofen, Jeschonnek was convinced it was impossible and tried to dissuade Hitler only to be brushed aside. Göring arrived 22 of November and felt compelled to say it was possible, even though he had had not oppertunity to calculate the tonnages, because he didnt wasnt to go against what his generals decision and more importantly Hitlers decision. Hitler after Jeschonnek innitial assesment refused to change his mind and we all know the rest.

Aragorn195 Yes. The video would have been much stronger to include that broader context. Other points that could have been made is Stalingrad wasn’t the primary object of Fall Blau but was only a secondary objective. Related to this, AFAIK, Stalingrad was the first time the Wehrmacht had been engaged in intense urban warfare in place of the “war of movement”. On the air lift, the Luftwaffe had successfully supplied the Demyansk Pocket in February and May earlier in 1942 over a greater distance but supplying fewer troops. The major difference in the Stalingrad pocket was the effectiveness of the Red Army Airforce. The possibility of a breakout was, according to Glantz and others, nil. The 6th Army had little mobility as they had shipped out most of their horses in anticipation of the coming winter. The lack of supplies and the need to conduct an offensive while simultaneously defending their flanks and rear meant a breakout was impractical. Finally, was Operation Uranus the first really successful application of “Deep Battle”/“Deep Operation” and a crucial lesson in how the Red Army could beat the Wehrmacht on the battlefield?

Assumptions were made on the total weights for the airlifting of supplies and foods...but for the food supplies an error was made in terms of not realizing that it was less dense and took up more spacing on the relief planes. In other words for food it wasn't a question of weight but how much of this less dense supply could be physically fit into the cargo planes resulting in less food that could be channeled.

The battle of Moscow, the battle of Stalingrad, the battle of Kursk, the defense of Sevastopol, the defense of Leningrad, operation Bagration, and others were part of the great Patriotic war. I am 0:03 seconds in. I expected this to be, obviously demonitized, but from 0:03 seconds, I am already confident I will like this, and liked, and I am fully confident that this will be equally good quality and more or less perfect. I will give a running commentary of particular points I liked. KEEP IT UP BROTHERS, YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWEEEEEESOME! Those graphics of cities and the oil fields make it feel like Hearts of Iron 3/4 awesome Rivers, Maps, Armies and commanders, as well as the territories taken up to that point are very accurate. Particularly the maps, which are very hard to get that accurate! Army composition is good, as well as the map of Stalingrad and I love the unit symbols, again, brings back the feeling of my playing HOI4 Artworks and clips are awesome, Good job! Nice mention of the railway station! Those bomb blasts graphics are awesome, wish there were more for the Henkel111's and maybe lowering slightly their sound, as it competed albeit not impeded narration. The music is very good, bringing memories of the scenes Soviet Storm and the episode of Stalingrad. Nice job! Perfect ending. Thanks also to your sponsors and patrons!

Kings and Generals totally agree. I only think it's a shame many portrayed Soviet soldiers as cowards that won't fight unless there's a gun pointed to their head. I think most of the German and Soviet soldiers fight for what they truly believe. It's unthinkable they are more scared to their superiors than facing tanks and bombers.
