But in any case, they've already lost once Barbarossa failed so it was hopeless anyways. Best thing they could've done was to go on the defensive, preserve as much manpower/equipment/resource as possible and make the Soviets pay dearly for each attack. The Sovjets didn't repair tanks very often. It was one- way material. Like their tank crews. And now you get, how they lose so many men...

You get me wrong. On the march, they left the tanks mostly and give the job, to the third line troops. About the german tanks: Of course the were repaired, if it was possible. Very often, they were send back to the Reich and get upgrades. And what is this bullshit, about they were unable to repair their own tanks. German engineers and mechanics are allways in the top of the world. What for a kind of nonsense, do you wanna me convince of?

Yep! It was about 600.000 Reichsmark. In comparison to a Panzer III, it was more than 5 times expensive. And nearly 7 times more, than a Stug III. But in this case, it isn't a question of the money. They enemies had such a favor in raw materials, that make it senseless, to fight them with a shear mass. The idea of the tiger was to fight the enemy first. And if they close enough to repeat, shock them with your heavy armor. This works very well, with enough support by Panzer IV- H and/ or Stug III- G. Btw. In the battle of air North side was always contested, that means Germans didn't had air supiority, in the South After couples of days Germans had air supiority, thats were most of russian tank losses come. Just cause russians had 2 mln. troops doesn't mean they were all active on front. Germans quickly used all their remaining reinforcements in first days. During offensive stages they probably had more troops in engangement front than russians ones. The whole engagement probably took more than 2 months. Soviet counter-offense went north of kursk , it would had been easier to push germans in south, because of terrain. But pushing south doesn't give soviets strategic front advantages. While pushing north(which soviets did), gived them 2 options for next offense going south for romania oil or middle to cut german front in two pieces.

the failure to give replacements to army group B in operation fall blau and stripping 9 divisions from the southern front when it was the main focus in 1942 was the biggest mistake, Stalingrad should have been an easy capture but 6th army received nowhere near enough replacements when they were available and as such ran a deficit of 50,000 men this would have won the battle and then the 6th army and 4th panzer army would be able to swing south and complete the operation for the caucasus oilfields. This would have changed the war as these two extra armies would have enabled the Germans to destroy the entire southern wing of the red army

That's not correct. The rate of suffering losses in batteles becomes the crucial thing, in other words, the ratio of losses to the initial forces. The greater that rate or ratio is, the more likely you're gonna lose the battle/war.

That isn't true. Ukraine is a counter-example. Zhukov was a master of combined-arms, had a chess like understanding of the battlefield, and his philosophy was altruism; not nihilism.

Ic ive found a fellow tik viewer! yeah im pretty sceptical about the 50 soviet tanks killed by planes claim (7:50) im pretty sure the Soviets lost only a few tanks or none at all in that instance. Air power really only had a morale and disruption effect on tank columns without knocking out many tanks due to the inherent inaccuracy of dumb ammunition.

At the end of the battle, the Soviets reach the German rail heads. Apart from the rolling stock, they capture hundreds of Knocked out German tanks. These were waiting to be transported back to Germany. These are not recorded as losses by the German army. Similar are the Ukrainians [hiwi's] attached at Corp level in the German army, these helpers are said to have run off during the battle, when in fact they were drafted into the combat units to replace losses. Again, the Division ration strength does not change, so the losses to grenadiers and infantry looks lighter than it actually was. There were thousands of Hiwi's attached to the German Corps at Kursk.

@@KingsandGenerals The biggest tanks battle by a total number of tanks in the world history was near Brody(Ukraine) in 1941, thousands tanks more near Brody comparing to Kursk, so the Kursk battle in 1943 is the second biggest battle by number of tanks. Soviet/Russia tried to wipe out from history the Brody battle, it was an epic soviet fail, mostly all heavy loses related to the exceptionally bad general Zhukov(after Brody soldiers gave him nickname Butcher) command skills and attitude towards subordinates, and, of curse, lack of dozed thousands experienced Red Army officers been exterminated by Stalin before WWII. 2500+ tanks were lost by USSR and/or captured by Germany near Brody and about 8000 tanks total loses in Ukraine in consequent battles in 1941, all in a few months. And my relatives took part in WWII in Ukraine in 1941.

don't know if you're from the US, but they propogandized our history lessons a bit. My high school history materials don't even mention the Battle of Kursk even though it was either the 1st or 2nd most important battle in Europe in WW2.

The main reasons were: 1) It was the beginning of the war for the Red Army and the tank crews did not have any experience. Almost all tank drivers had just a small experience (2-5 hours of driving). At the same time, nazis had a huge experience which they got during the Blitzkrieg. 2) Most of the Soviet tanks were not modern and even modern ones like (KV-2 and T-34) could be easily hit by 8,8 cm FlaK 18/36/37. That was the main reason by the way. 3) Crews did not have enough armor-piercing shells because of the chaos in the Red Army which nazis made in the first months of the invasion. The reason why russians don't like to mention this battle in their history is simple it was the epic fail and they lost everything, the root reason was the Stalin's Big Purge murdered 30000+ the most qualified and experienced soviet officers in 30th, those commanders who could implement USSR advantage in this battle in 1941, more over russians don't like to mention this battle because it was literarily bloody and personal general Georgy Zhukov fuck up which lead to loss most than millions soviet troops and most of the artillery, tanks, aviation and so on.

Kursk and Stalingrad were the most important battles in Europe in WW2. By far.

3 MILLION overall troops on this particular battlefield, and HALF A MILLION dead when it was over. The Soviets won these battles at one of the heaviest costs of any nation in history, it's no wonder Russia has population issues to this very day, they were often phyrric victories in some ways. There's a reason a grim saying goes "World War II was won by British intelligence, American steel and Russian blood".

It was huge but not decisive. The German was already on the back foot before Operation Citadel. They just had to attack for the sake of attacking without much hope. Thus that is why it was the last offensive the German made on Soviet Union soil.

Good point, although you could also add the Balkans campaign of 1941 where the Third Reich (following Mussolini’s Italian failures) invaded and occupied Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece for the Axis Powers, with the first great paratrooper landing in history on Crete. It’s incredible to think this happened the same year as the push for Leningrad and Moscow in Operation Barbarossa, as well as the British led Operation Crusader in the North Africa campaign to cross the Axis powers’ line of control along the Egyptian border to relieve the siege of Tobruk in Libya.

Fascists don't think rationally. Imagine seeing the world through the lens of the movie 300. The Nazis thought they were Spartans, the ubermensch fighting the sub-human Persians (Russians). Of course the Nazis would attack, no matter the size of the enemy army. To leave the Russian campaign unfinished would be for the Nazis to admit the failure of their own propaganda.

@@Edax_Royeaux To be fair to the Germans, in WWI they had actually defeated Russia and annexed Eastern Europe. Hitler probably thought he could do the same thing and that Russia would just tear itself apart again under the might of the Nazi's. They should've focused on making their intelligence better, German Intelligence was notoriously awful that when the Americans allowed the Nazi spies in Eastern Europe to remain but work for them, they got nothing useful out of it. That way they could've tried to promote internal conflicts. Of course, Stalin had already been busy nipping at the bud any possible threat to his rule through shit like Holodomor, executions or forced deportations, so this would've been very difficult.

@@TheDirtysouthfan Germany had defeated Russia through espionage by using Lenin to overthrow the Russian Empire. Through force of arms, Russia was kicking Germany's ass. And even though the plan to get Lenin in power succeeded, this also bit the Germans in the ass because now they had a huge Communist threat next door to them for the coming decades.

They got bogged down in Leningrad and Stalingrad which managed to withstand offensive after offensive, soaking up resources the Nazis really needed. If anything the Nazis were the Persians, stopped at Thermoplayae and Artemesium, gaining a win over Athens at last but ultimately losing at Salamis and then later Platea. They ultimately lost it all to Alexander the Great, a foreigner who imposed his culture on his new kingdom,like how the USSR occupied eastern Germany and Berlin.

I tend to agree. The tanks were the main strength of the German army, losing them broke them.

Its said that the lost at Stalingrad made that the Germans lost their last opportunity to take the Caucasus, the only decent source of oil in Europe. Without this (and the lost at North Africa) the army must keep minimal motorized units, and the Lufftwaffe was nearly abandoned since it consumed so much, and then everything goes on a downfall... Germany's oil factories were also being targeted, so even fewer resources for them. On the other side the allies had nearly infinite amount of oil, so they could build and maneuver with their tanks, and had trucks to bring supplies and everything. Winning at Kursk would only delay the inevitable, since the Soviets could just fall back and continuer mass producing and bombarding his cities, but at Stalingrad they still had a chance to win the war.

This battle was anything but a turning point.
