Well done for videos. I personally think that Romanians are more connected to Slavic than to Roman(Latin) nations, just check out those names, Vlad which is actually shorter version of VladiSLAV - means ruler on most slavic languages, name of the city T(a)rgoviste means place where you trade, literary city center, you can find many more evidence that prove my point. Keep going more great clips!

Damn, what he did to Dan III was utter humiliation and must have been really satisfying for Vlad. Having the murderer of your father and brother defeated in a duel, then having him dig his own grave in front of his men before cutting his head and impaling them all. That was some "Count of Monte Cristo level" revenge.

Vicent Lazar Besides, massacring civvies? What the fuck, Vlad?? On another point, why didn't Dan the IIIrd's soldiers try to at least fight and sell their lives expensively?
@vicentlazar8816
@vicentlazar8816 6 жыл бұрын
It is extreme by today's standards I agree, but back then such things were usual. He understood psychological warfare and wanted to send a message to his other opponents. Killing civilians was acceptable even in the western code of chivalry. Knights had no problem massacrating peasants. Only noblemen were spared if they could pay. Look up chevauchée s. Dan's soldiers were probably heavily outnumbered and surrounded. They probably hoped they would be spared if they don`t fight back.
@butcaruhristu4561

It's about sending a message, plus they were traitors, and Vlad didn't like traitors. During his rule there are a few tales. The first one is the shortest, In Targoviste if I remember right, on a fountain there was a golden cup, which is said that during his rule the cup was never stolen. And the secound: A merchant lose a bag of 1000 forints, he came to the king and asked if anyone finds it to contact him, and the persone who finds it will recive 100 forints. After a while a man finds the bag, and brings it to Tepes, he contacts the merchant and is brought in front of the throne, to ensure that it is his, when he counted he tried to trick Vlad and the person who find it, and said "Oh I see you have taken your cut, ok then I will leave". But Vlad stoped him and asked if the man really took his cut from his bag, to which he replied that he didn't. Seeing that the merchant wants to trick him and the good person who helped him said :" Then this means that this is not your bag of forints, so I will keep it here with me until the real persone who lost this comes and claims it, and don't worry we will notify you if we ever find your bag of forints.

A history fact is that Vlad the Impaler was actually a role model for Ivan the Terrible. Ivan was a great diplomat and some of his cruel and diplomatic actions was inspired from Vlad. Another fact is that when Ivan was a child he was asking stories about Vlad and he was very impressed and excited. The best part is that Stalin was considering Ivan the Terrible the best leader that ever exist.

Holy fuck this dude just decided battles by cutting people in half during duels, sent heads as messages to kings, impaled whole armies, burnt alive the homeless, killed everyone who opposed him, forced people to dig their own graves, made infiltration operations by himself and took the fight with one of the mightiest empires of that time... this is both more brutal and epic than any fiction I know. Vlad Tepes, Janush Hunyadi, and Skanderbeg are the medieval Ghostbusters that helped slow the advance of the Ottoman menace. They were all in correspondence with each other and if they were able to unite their forces the Ottomans would have been finished in the Balkans. This was a well put video and popcorn worthy. Bravo!! P.S. Since your interested in Balkan history you should look into Skanderbeg since there aren't that many pieces on him and I think you'd be interested.

Whether you consider his actions murder or justice, one thing is for sure - this man didn't waste time sitting on his hands! He could have ruled Wallachia and grown fat while doing absolutely nothing. He had high connections with all his neighbors - the Moldavian warlord(a man of legend himself) was his cousin, the Hungarians saw him as a loyal servant and he rubbed elbows with the Turkish sultan since they were children, being more like brothers rather then rivals. Instead, he chose the path of action...
@HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 6 жыл бұрын
^This. That's why I think that, while Vlad's rule was brutal, it wasn't because he was inherently a brutal man. In choosing to attempt to set Wallachia on a new course, he considered the brutal measures as a necessary evil for the benefit of Wallachia

An excellent video but your 'opinion' that he was not by nature a cruel man is absurd. In a time more brutal than most his example of TERROR was exceptional. Even the Turks, the standard bearers of cruelty, saw him this way as in the end did his own people. Effective yes. Stalin was too but VERY brutal. Why the reality denial?? Don't reinforce today's resurgent ignorant reactionary nationalism and bigotry. (NOT cool, anymore than anti free speech Liberal PC is).
@autnocens
@autnocens 6 жыл бұрын
It seems only empires have the monopolistic right on efficient terror. Well, I'm sure Vlad learned first hand, from the Ottomans, how to do it, only he did it better. He went to both the Sandhurst and School of the Americas of his time simultaneously and apparently graduated first of his class, arguably besting even Stephen the Great or Michael the Brave in military strategy and tactics. You are wrong, Mago is not Romanian, so the "resurgent ignorant reactionary nationalism" is only in your head. The standard bearers of cruelty... hmmm, you probably never heard what crusaders did in Palestine or when they sacked Constantinople, to mention just a few examples already happened in Vlad's time. There are so many more, many without any military justification.
@MegaRaven100
@MegaRaven100 6 жыл бұрын
*autnocens* Vlad did learn about impaling from them but they used it as a SPECIAL punishment for traitors, Not en masse As for Crusader insanity I get accused of anti West propaganda even though the majority of evidence for Christian insanity (Jerusalem) and slaughter comes from the Christian writers of the time. Lastly i never said Mago is Romanian but this history attracts the worst sorts See other comments (see all the WW II neo Nazi fans)

Brutal but great man, a Liberator for the Bulgarians, if he had received help from this damn Matthias the First of Hungary things would have gone very badly for the ottomans

@@adrianmarina3278 Hungarians were long traitors, their engineer, Orban helped the ottomans to have access to the Dardanelle Bombard, some Hungarians nobles sided with the ottomans, not heloing the Wallachians also did helped the ottomans, these guys didn't own the right to have an independant country!

Fought two duels sparring his army, personally tricked ottoman garrison force giving his men an easy victory and tons of loot. This is how you make your forces fanatically loyal.

If you're looking for feedback, I really like the design, organization, and content of the graphic at around 3 minutes. It's extremely clear and easy to understand, and it's a good counterpoint to the non-military aspects of this slice of history.

Always looking for feedback, positive and negative, keeps me on my toes. Thank you. I agree completely with what you said. Presenting certain parts of the story in that way allows for more info and details to be added and connected with the rest of the story.

Thank you sir. Been researching a lot for part 2 already, and I've just received help from a group of professors from the Justus Liebig University in Germany. They've sent me their research papers, one of whom spent the last few years in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, going through local sources while researching this very topic. So I hope to re-shape my script and put in as many interesting details in the video from their work.
