Welcome to this week's catamaran build episode! Today we have something quite different for you- a comparison between hull #1 (Supernatural) and hull #2 (Ruby Rose 2). There are quite a few differences between the two boats, some aesthetic choices, some specifications, and some simply changes to the build decided by the manufacturer. Strap yourselves in for this two-parter as Nick and Mike Rees take us on a deep dive, starting with hull #1.

Loving the way this model of boat looks now that it is completed. I'm also glad you recognize the importance of drilling air holes for ventilation in the drawers and storage areas where you may be plugging in and charging electronics. That is the type of minor but critically important safety feature that cannot be overlooked.

One thing I would change is the deeper drawer under the nav station desk and make it flush with the shallow ones. I have a desk at home like that and I banged my legs so many times in that bloody sharp corner bellow that I can feel the pain only looking at the video. Other than that, everything looks real nice.

Supernatural is going to be a great boat, and I'm sure the owners are going to be very happy with it. But, as you've repeatedly stated, RR2 is going to be a world travelling yacht, go anywhere, do anything, home for you and Terysa. So, I'm interested in seeing what is different on RR2 to meet that requirement of a full time floating home.

I've bought a few small USB powered fans that are great for moving around to where you need them. They come various sizes but I like the smaller 5"-6" fans and place them near me. Mine also have retractable cords and small stands. Wonderful in hot weather when you're not near AC or a bigger fan.

They cram the boat full of heaps of storage at the expense of livable space throughout. I myself do not want that much crap on board so I would want to reduce the storage so a guy could walk around not having to turn sideways to have to walk through every passage way, especially the mid ship... The sale rep guy is not even a big man and he is tight in there

I cant imagine having to service or replace those engines through those tiny openings. It looks like the boat was built with the engines in place. Thoughts the flooring in the cockpit… whilst flexiteek (and some other brands) delay fire.. these soft Floors ( at least those we tested) burned like crazy .. something to consider. Loved your question… is there a manual override? … that’s why you don’t have it I presume. Is an override even possible for that? Unless you hook up a second system…or can disengage the motor.. Other thoughts? The boat looks okay, I think it’s too small and those beds way too high.. Storage is being sold as “soo much” but personally I think it’s just normal, which is great for a holiday.. like you we live on board and that adds up. Also in weight. Whilst you may have volume you don’t want to overload.. in that perspective ..you will have space in the wrong places.. and lack it where you want it.. this all comes from thinking the boat is large, but that only applies to close quarters, budgets and costs.. on the ocean all boats are small, this being no exception. Having said that it looks mostly well made and I am sure you will have many great journeys on RR2.

So, the lithium batteries that caught fire were not the marine lithium-iron-phosphate batteries mounted in the boat, but external gadget batteries? The chemistry here is a huge issue, and to my knowledge, LiFePo4 batteries are nearly as safe as absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries.

Minuscule detail, but...the cup holder look like small diameter. Also could be just the camera view. The US sailing chanel Sailing Zatara who is a strong beliver of the 2nd amendment did a piece on this and said its largely a waste of time to carry a fire arm. Also in many countries you will have to surrender it anyway and if they find it and you lied, its not a fine its jail. Moral if the story, largely a waste of time.
@Centurion04
@Centurion04 Жыл бұрын
@@four4xxxx Not entirely accurate. Most countries will allow it to be impounded onboard in a secure and locked box that they will put a customs seal over, though some countries will demand it be turned over to the local police and return it upon departure. For the case of Zatara: his main concern wasn't that, it was that he didn't like the idea of a shootout while having 5 other families members onboard, since bullets whizzing around would increase the likelihood of someone getting hit. I love Keith, but respectfully disagree with him there, though I understand his concern.
@four4xxxx
@four4xxxx Жыл бұрын
@@Centurion04 that was Keiths point. Its in a lock box out of use, so benefit limited to at sea where less likely to have an issue. Keith has now sailed the world, obviously avoided many bad locations, however collectively we also have Delos, Florence and others who have sailed globally and not faced a issues requiring a gun. I think this goes to demonstrate the world isnt the US and guns are not an automatic solution and i tend to agree, going for a shoot out in a fibreglass boat at sea....
@Centurion04
@Centurion04 Жыл бұрын
@@four4xxxx Nobody ever said guns are an automatic solution. Nor is there any sense in saying "the world isn't the U.S." because awful people aren't limited to the U.S. and situations where one might require the means to defend their family are also not limited. Ask the people of France right now. For anyone who actually paid attention and saw the horrific videos coming from that terrorist uprising, the means with which to defend one's family, self and property are not something that should be prohibited as an option. As I said, I respectfully disagree with Keith and pointing out Delos and the rest of those purely anecdotal examples does nothing to change that opinion, since you never need to defend yourself until the moment you need to defend yourself. It would be like saying you don't need car insurance because you've never totaled your car and none of your neighbors have either. Only the stakes here are much higher than losing your sedan.
@four4xxxx
@four4xxxx Жыл бұрын
@@Centurion04 a quick check and i found alot of the "cruising countries" visited by many of these KZfaq channels (globally, not just Carribean) require surrendering during visit with significant penalities for failing to do so, with lock box for smaller fire arms. Reviewing forums suggests US registered boats seem to be or at leaat feel this way a target of more in depth searches by border forces, maybe they have higher suspicsion of their being a gun on board, no idea. Keiths point was if its in a lock box or surrendered the point is the same, its not available. So you are then limited to only having access in international waters where you are far less likely to need it. I also agree that a GRP boat with your family on board is not a place to start a gun fight, especially if the agressor is seriously packing with automatic weapons they dont need to hide from border forces. Some reasearch on this topic also seems to suggest that where cruisers have been killed, it was because a gun was drawn on the boat and suvivors seem to indicate this caused the escalation to lethal force by the "pirates". Hard to know facts or detailed survey though, especially if no survivors. Overall i fell the best approach is to simply avoid areas of concern.
