While its pretty much a fact that Zero 2 was an unequivocal upgrade, one cannot deny the sheer awesomeness that was Zero/Alpha when it came out, and later on the Saturn. It really was THE fighting game and kept me hooked for ages. This game carries such strong nostalgia for me its astonishing, ;p

In some ways Street fighter alpha 2 was a downgrade from Street fighter alpha. Replacing alpha combo with custom combo in Street fighter alpha 2 really ticked me off but I will say the stages and overall character roster was a definitive upgrade!

The Sega Saturn is the console to own when it comes to 2D gaming. Interestingly, when the Saturn and PlayStation 1 first got released in Japan back in the mid 1990's, the Saturn was selling better than the PlayStation 1 for a while. However, in Europe and the US it was the opposite due to people wanting more and more 3D gaming. There are loads of Saturn games in Japan that sadly never saw the light of day in the West. Back then the only way to play them if not living in Japan was to either get the Saturn chipped or use a Universal Cartridge for the cartridge slot to enable to play import games. I remember getting the Universal Cartridge for my Saturn and I also remember getting the game Astal on japanese import which I really enjoyed but I couldn't understand why it didn't get a UK release as the game also got released in the US and it's a really good game.

Yep, that is so true. The Saturn was out selling the PlayStation at one point in Japan but never in the west :( I still stand by my belief that if Sony never had Namco and psygnosis at the beginning then the PlayStation would have not been as successful as it was. After all, it was Ridge Racer and Wipe out and destruction Derby that sold the machine in the west. Everyone had those games.

The Playstation version is actually polygonal characters with bitmaps, that overall look like the arcade sprites. It helped overcome some techincal issues. The PS1 CPS2 conversions all use this technique (unsure about XMEN COTA because Capcom didn't do the conversion for PS1) It's also why, no matter how clear your display is, you can NEVER see the faces 100% pixel by pixel, like you can on sprite versions. The technique is much easier to see in Marvel games, Gambits idle animation and his coat in XSF, you can easily see it's polygonal and a lot of animation is simulated by warping the polygons. Not so hidden in Alpha 3 with hit sparks.

Yeah, the funny part is, that guy (Nick Rox) had NO CLUE about how the Saturn's Super shadows were solid blue when the music was set to 'Original' (instead of 'Remixed'). The Saturn simply had an exclusive edit for those shadows when you used Remixed BGM, whereas the PS1 just didn't have the option at all. In the end, Nick was just a fanboy of PS... and he showed it on many an occasion in his "contributions" to gaming media during those years.

The arcade version along with Mega Man: The Power Battle arcade, comes with 2 different soundtrack formats: YM2151+OKIM6295 and Q-Sound. Many may like the louder MIDI sound module style Q-Sound, but the other sounds more nostalgic in a good way, making me like it a bit more.

The PS2 port puts them all to shame--including the original arcade version. The only downside to the PS2 version (part of SFA Anthology) is the lack of the option for the arranged soundtrack, but it sort of made up for it by including the option for the CPS Changer soundtrack and made the arranged tracks available in the sound test for listening).

I just learned that the SH-1 and 2 chips used in the 32X were also used in Capcom's CPS-3 board. The CPS-1 and 2 used a 68000 and almost the same Yamaha sound chip. So if Capcom wanted, they could have easily ported these games to the 32X. In the case of the CPS-1 game, the 32x is far more powerful and has more memory so arcade perfect ports would have been elementary to implement. Que sera sera.

@@RetroCore There's wasn't any point because the absurdly powerful 32X was announced as obsolete by their own management, just like the Saturn was, rather than keeping it supported long enough for it to be profitable and not given good 1st party games, just like the Saturn, in the US at least. The 32X could have been choc full of arcade perfect games. But then, so could the Mega Drive but you can't make developers release quality. I just played the worst version of Missile Command ever on the Mega Drive which I'm pretty sure can handle a perfect version of Missile Command.

The Sega Saturn really seemed to handle 2D games better than the PS1, it's just a shame that 3D games were being pushed so much that people/game developers forgot about that. I remember finally being able to play this via game via emulation in the months leading up to CPS2Shock getting past the CPS2 copy protection, because someone hacked the CPS Changer version to run in an emulator back in 2000. The Gameboy Color version is a lot of fun, despite its limitations. Thanks for another great show.

There's a hidden game in Street Fighter Alpha Anthology called Hyper Street Fighter Alpha that allows you to play as every Street Fighter Alpha character in one mode including the ones from Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold. You just have to get an ending (Getting the bad ending in SFA3 counts towards this) in all of the games included in the collection.

***** Yes, many conversions of the time for the Saturn are great and technically impressive, but still not arcade perfect. I know it may not be noticeable to everyone but if you are interested in competitive play, even the sightliest change in speed can ruin or buff a character/move or the like. The closest you'll ever get to the arcade on console is the Alpha Anthology for the PS2, which is emulated.
@m.jordan5181

*@OldGraFX:* Since you've brought up emulation, I'll go you one better and kindly tell you that playing Capcom CPS2 fighters via Final Burn Legends on a 1Ghz+ original Xbox >> your Sony emulated "Anthology" from both a technical AND arcade accuracy standpoint. It's the closest thing we've seen to arcade perfect emulation yet (and that includes any of your other ps2 ports). Input response/delay, frame perfect links, even arcade exclusive "glitches" all check out. Only the most hardcore Capcom fighting enthusiasts are up to speed on this.

We're talking about official releases though. The XBOX or most other systems running homebrew emulators unfortunately will still not render the games in native resolution. I personally don't mind emulation, but if you want almost arcade perfection the best thing would be a PC with a CRT EmuDriver compatible ATI video card connected to a real arcade CRT RGB monitor. It's the closest you can get to the original arcade.

Retro Core It's really down to the fact that they hadn't developed the technology in time for Alpha 1 to release on SNES (In this case the special chip in Alpha 2's cart) to make any meaningfully sufficient port, like which was available for the SNES by the time Alpha 2 rolled along. Let's be glad they did it the way they did as well since I'm sure none of us can imagine a stock SNES version of Alpha being much worth playing the way the absolute marvel of a version that the Alpha 2 release was for the SNES in 95... Sucks that the chip was only ever used for just SFA2 AND Star Ocean as it clearly had the potential to stretch some impressive 2D games out of such an aging piece of technology like the SNES was in 1995...

@@sega32xxx14Alpha 1 has even less characters, animation frames and stages than SSF2/SSF2T did, it would’ve been trivial to fit it on the cartridge. The real reason was that Capcom was already prioritizing development for PlayStation and Saturn, with the Street Fighter Zero staff deciding to change plans from porting it to the Super Famicom, and opting for PlayStation and Saturn instead. Good thing too, because the PS1 and Saturn versions have very little gameplay differences from Arcade, a few console exclusive combos here and there, as opposed to the substandard SFA2 ports on those consoles and especially the slow, busted SNES port.

Street Fighter ZERO Ratings: Arcade (CPS2): 9.5/10 (The game is good, however there are two things that prevent it from reaching a perfect 10 stars. 1. The voices are so cringy and don't feel like they should be there. And 2. The gameplay (as to be expected with early Capcom games) is a hard sack of crap. That's not to say it's bad.) Arcade (CPS1): 8.0/10 (The CPS1 version is basically the Elite port of Space Harrier: A ruined version of the CPS2 port. The music is bad, and I mean MS-DOS SF2 bad. The day I start liking the CPS1 is the day when they actually *upgrade to a better music board.* But trust me, that day will never come.) Mobile Java: 0.0/10 (What even is this?!?! This port is horrible, unredeemable, and the music is crap! What also blows my mind is that they had the balls to use the Street Fighter ZERO 2 music for the title screen. This is not a good port.) PlayStation: 7.0/10 (Again, good effort, but the sound effects sound like they came out of a '30s flick. And I wasn't even born in the 1930s! Also, the loading time never disappoints in the crap factor.) Game Boy: 1.0/10 (Oh, god, please do not make me go insane again... God damn it, Tiertex...) Windows 95: 8.7/10 (It's good, but the intro is trash. The intro must've came straight out of the 80s if it looks this bad. However, I can't forgive the fact that they had to use the PlayStation version.) Sega Saturn: 10.5!/10 (Yet another port that breaks the 10-star mark... And deservedly so. This port is perfect. There are no errors I can spot here.) In short, the Sega Saturn is awesome and the Mobile Java is crap.

+Retro Core We all know emulation doesn't guarantee a perfect experience. In the case of SNKs collections/anthologies for example, many of the US versions (most notably the KOF games) have sound issues and the like. So I think it's still worth it to check them out. Alpha anthology luckily it's considered to be practically perfect by many high level/tournament players.
