With absolutely spectacular winter weather I drive 2hrs east to the Battle River Trestle near Wainwright Alberta. This amazing bridge built in 1908 by the Grand trunk Pacific Railway is a testament of engineering.

It is wonderful how the 4K and the white snow background makes the colors of the trains pop. Also noticed the tire and tread tracks in the river bed below the trestle. ATVers and snowmobilers having their fun.

Great video, thank you for encoding in 60fps. This bridge is amazing to me from a civil engineering perspective. if you can somehow get a hold of Grady at civil engineering on youtube, I would love to see him do a video about this bridge. There's NO WAY the weight of a train doesn't cause the height to sag down at least a little bit, and in the wind, how did they engineer the trestles to handle the side load of a windy day (on the train). How do they inspect it to know its safe? This thing is an engineering marvel. I love watching any videos about it.

Thank you, They inspect this bridge quarterly and they have wind sensors on it and if the wind is above 45mph there is a speed reduction that is automatically placed on trains with a white signal at both approaches of the bridge about 2 miles back. some empty grain cars were blow right off this bridge on a train 5 years ago so it can be pretty bad.

can you imagine seeing this view of the river and trestle bridge, as a steam locomotive went across on a winter's day? as much as i love railfanning, i'd kill to see an old steam engine go across that bridge. I've stopped there at the visitors lookout many times, and it never stops taking my breath away with the sights

It truly is an engineering marvel and yes seeing a steamer go across that bridge would be spectacular. I really hope that CN 6060 gets running again and maybe they’ll do a cross Canada trip with it. One can only hope.

Another great video !!!!!! I see on Google earth they call it the Fabyan Trestle bridge. I love how they built an actual viewing area for it. It looks to be the same design, and time period as the abandoned Mintlaw Trestle Bridge just southwest of Red Deer.

@@TonyVRailfanning it's off the C&E trail between red deer and penhold. It's pretty hard to see now due to tons of residential development, and you can't get close to it anymore, but you can still see it for a quick bit from the highway, and get a great view of it if your going down the river.

Great video Tony and love your stuff. Just a small point of clarification, CN's Little Salmon River bridge at mi 173.20 Napadogan Sub in New Denmark NB is 3920 feet long and would be Canada's second longest bridge. It is also 195 feet at its tallest.

Hi and thanks for commenting. That Salmon river Bridge has always caused confusion. I am aware of that bridge and the numbers speak for themselves however because the wooden trestle is still burred under the west embankment. Some still consider it part of the bridge. Is the Salmon river bridge part of the CN mainline?
@KevsRailfanning
@KevsRailfanning 2 ай бұрын
@@TonyVRailfanning I took another look at the Battle River bridge and while it is similar in construction to CNs Little Salmon River Bridge it does appear to have a trestle section. The Little Salmon River Bridge has trestle style bridge bents but are not connected just at the top with through deck girder bridge sections. And you are right. everyone has a view on what is a bridge or a trestle and even what to call them at times. The Little Salmon River bridge is on the mainline for trains heading to and from Moncton and the rest of Canada. CN Napadogan sub mainline actually crosses two different Salmon Rivers. The timetable page in the Canadian Trackside Guide shows where both of the bridges are on the Napdaogan Sub,
