big time wrestling battle royal. Match took place around 1975/76 and not 1980 as the video states. Note too that Andre isn't much taller than Bobo. Bobo was around 6' 4"...making Andre around 6' 10" at best.

Bobo broke down the racial barriers in wrestling back in the Fifties. He went on to have a long distinguished career for decades to follow and served as a role model for generations of kids both black and white. Bobo also had a lot of class too.

The nonsense that killed Detroit was The Sheik's stranglehold on the US title for so long
@ernestcruz6316 Жыл бұрын
@@ememem6 Not just that; the Detroit area's economy was in freefall and still hasn't fully recovered, to this very day. When the auto industry went under, so did the public's ability to buy tickets to the wrestling shows. The Sheik and his booking practices may have been a cause, but it wasn't the only cause.

If you remember the very first time the announcer gave the stipulations, he said _wrestle each other at a later date._ I think later he either made a mistake, or trying to cover what looked like was a change, then had to go back to the _later date_ thing. Or André didn't have the two ring thing down, and he misunderstood. He didn't do English well, back then. Afterall, André didn't stick in a territory for long back then. He was a free agent. Offered contracts for one show or so, then he moved on to somewhere else. Brute and Bobo was part of the Sheik's, Ed Farhat, territory, so they would be able to wrestle each other, while André was somewhere else.

So this is what the early days of Royal Rumble was like - just toss your opponents into the adjacent ring and everything is over within just 10 minutes. Nice.

I saw them both live (but not together) a couple times, in Portland. I saw Bobo Brazil Head Butt a guy so hard, it bounced him (recoiled him) over the top rope and onto his back onto the concrete.

Yes, and Bruce Willis(Die Hard movies) was able to best numerous very bad villains. They were world class terrorists with millions of dollars in funding and all the high tech gadgets and firepower yet he beat them all. So he was one of the greatest police officers ever. Right? The only difference was live performance vs film performance.

This was a set up match for Bobo and The Brute. But since you mentioned classic names, how about The Stomper, Ben Justice, TEX MACKENSIE(my hero), Mitsou Arakawa and Sato, Sailor Art Thomas, Lord Layton, Johnny Valentine.... Todays stuff is too big on the flamboyance.
@DDS0295 жыл бұрын
A friend and I walked, and talked with Tex McKenzie, on the way to his car when he was part of the main event at a show at my high school. He came out of the locker room with his opponent, joking around, but as soon as they saw us, boom, right back into character, split and walked in different directions. Later we saw his opponent get in Tex's car when they thought no one saw them. Kayfabe, alive and well in the 70's. Speaking of his car . . . exactly like stereotypes would have you believe. Big white Cadillac convertable. White, on white, on white. Curb feelers to protect the wide whitewalls, Texas personalized license plate, BIG⭐TEX. And yes, even the bull horns on the front. Just perfect.

this is wrong - andre wasn't eliminated and the brute eliminated himself, thus the winners were bob and andre...

Mistake or miscommunication. André didn't speak very good English back then. Likely forgot or misunderstood the stipulations. Sometimes someone just screws up.
@thomasglunt59253 жыл бұрын
Andre went over the top rope, thus should have ended up in the second ring. Bobo went through the ropes and therefore should have never wrestled in the second ring. The Brute eliminated himself.
