Retrospective/Review of the classic Joss Whedon 2002 Sci-Fi Western, Firefly. Before its premature cancellation, Firefly clearly made a big impact.

@@Vaultboy-ke2jj Which is not a space battle. That battle is happening inside a nebula, which has has the capacity to transmit sound. @@grandoldpodcast I disagree. Partly because I seem to hold his later work in higher regard than you do (even though it's far from perfect, I'll admit that), but mostly because of Tim Minear. Pound for pound Firefly is by far the best sci-fi that has ever been made, the characters are written so well and the cast was so perfect that we shall most likely never see such a fantastic combination again and that saddens me to my core, Most sci-fi is lucky to crank out one really good episode a season working with 20 plus eps, Firefly had nothing but good episodes (14 out of 14) with OUT OF GAS and OUR MRS REYNOLDS being worthy of every award in the verse, I will always be grateful to Joss Whedon for bringing this show to life, I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer but Firefly was his masterpiece.

I would disagree that all 14 episodes are great. The Train Job and The Message were very meh. Objects in Space didn't really grab anything though I feel the movie would really pay off what it was trying to do. Heart of Gold was very generic though solid. It could be said the same about Shindig though I love it. The fact that Firefly came out of the gate with such power was impressive. However it did only get only 14 episodes, looking forward into how Whedon ran his shows I can see firefly definitely getting some hate from the fans. In essence we only got the buildup but Whedon's payoff tend to have a lot of mortality and that brings about a lot of divisiveness within the fan base. I would also argue that Farscape was a better show because it did have more staying power. Farscape did an equally impressive job of world-building. Its reoccurring characters were just as good and continued for longer. Both stand out in there respective theme and genre. But while Firefly can be one of very few Space Westerns, Farscape was duking it out in Space Opera in which Star Wars and Babylon 5 live. That being said Firefly is still awesome and definitely stands among giants.
@dreamingflurry2729

Wow, you've never seen Babylon 5 - right? :( - Seriously, Firefly is lacking everywhere! The characters are boring, the ship looks dumb, the solar system (a system with more than 2 habitable planets makes no sense!) is illogical etc. :(

@@dreamingflurry2729: Yes I have seen Deep Space Nine oh I mean Babylon 5 and just like its Star Trek forerunner it was primarily your standard cookie cutter sci-fi until you got the the Dominion and Shadow wars, Ask anyone what episodes of either of those two shows they remember and the best and most beloved episodes happen during those wars, I will remember pretty much every episode of Firefly until the day i die but you could put a gun to my head and I couldn't tell you a damn thing about the first 14 episodes of Babylon 5 or Deep Space Nine, so its as I said, POUND FOR POUND FIREFLY rules them all, If you can't see that you have most likely taken to many mass driver shots to the head.

@@A2forty: Its about what each of those eps teaches us, for example in The Train Job we learn that Mal is willing to steal to make money but he has a line he will not cross no matter what, also he is not apposed to killing to make a point just ask Crow, can you imagine Picard or Janeway doing that? The Message was about honor and ended with a tragic death, on any other show we would have a soap box speech about morality and the kid would have ended up in jail, Time and time again Firefly did not do what we had come to expect from all the other sci-fi on the air, it pushed the edge with a diverse (as in interesting cast of characters) and not an entire crew of holier than thou SJW's, I would say that each eps of Firefly had AT LEAST one good laugh in it along with a heartfelt moment unlike the technobable that filled most of each episode of Star Trek, Don't get me wrong I love Star Trek (not Discovery, that crap doesn't count) but I am still sad Firefly ended and its been almost two damn decades.

I absolutely loved the series, even with the episodes coming out in the wrong order, rewatching them endlessly on Netflix, but I think what I loved the most about it was the... 'quoteability' of the show. Every episode was chock full of one-liners and seemingly off the cuff dialogue that was infinitely quoted to fellow fans. It also fits with the world-building that many of the best lines in the show almost require a visual element and some backstory. My personal favorite: "You wanna run this ship? Yes! Well... you can't."

Firefly reminds me of the submarine I served on for four years, 1977-81. The characters “outside the box” solution finding personalities remind me of the crew I served with. Firefly and the submarine service both have a mission where they operate independently. As in completely by ourselves with our own ingenuity. No one there to help when problems arouse. Most of the time going off patrol and into port for repairs wasn’t an option except in extremity.

I was immeadiately captivated by the show; the actors, the story lines, the setting, and the incredible dialogue. Where's my gorram brown duster?! I need to be in full regalia for this one... As side notes, "Out of Gas" is my favorite episode of the series and I've always thought the the bounty hunter in "Objects in Space" was related by training or association to the Black Ops Operative in Serenity. As the way they move, fight and the cadence of their speech was very similar and oddly singular when compared to every other character in the series. Perhaps that an improved version of them is what River was being made to become. Am I the only one who felt that there was a hidden story there????????

What I like most about Out of Gas is the fact that the captain chose Serenity himself. The whole time you think the salesman talks about Serenity, so Malcolm got hoodwinked into buying a junker and is now rationalizing it. Alysia Mer David-Wasser, you misunderstand me friend. The words that they used or the thoughts they had weren't the same, I said the cadence of their speech was the same. Slow. Methodical. Constantly thinking. Understood...one was thinking about his beliefs while one was contemplating if it was fair that men are physically stronger than women but only women could bear children. As a military man, I can attest to the fact that you can have two people from two separate places with different backgrounds and thoughts go through training, serve their time and still be individuals. But the TRAINING and the LIFESTYLE sticks with them. You can tell when someone served in the military by their walk, the way they (mostly) cut their hair and some of their militarized colloquialisms. I've had people guess that I was military just because I "Sir" and "Ma'am" everybody regardless of their age. The two characters' race has nothing to do with my observation. And believe-you-me, we have more than our fair share of crazy people serving in the armed forces. Unfortunately, no amount of training can breed out mental instability. Think about it.Both men HUNT the same way. Planning. Research. Calculated movements and actions. The Serenity crew was hounded constantly over the course of the show by any manner of idiot, pirate, thug and rich dandy, and none of them came at the crew in quite the same way as those two did.Both used some form of martial art when it came down to close quarters incapacitation of a target. Other than River, NOBODY ELSE in the show or the movie fought like that.And the Alliance was shown to be focused on "making people better". It's my thought that they wanted to remove some of the individuality, and eventually, any mental issues out of their high end operatives and make them even more efficient at killing. Hence the project that created (or fucked up) River.Maybe Jubal was an ex-operative who was let go because of his broken personality or was discharged "honorably" and fell into bounty hunting because he enjoyed hurting people too much not to. (I'd imagine that the willingness of someone to get blood on their hands would be a sought after trait for a black ops organization and that the stability of one's mind would be secondary. That much is stated in the opening of Serenity by the doctor as he explains to Simon that their subjects minds are often damaged, but when activated "River is a thing of grace".) Maybe if the show had been allowed to mature for another season or two, we would have caught a glimpse of Book falling into his old self in a moment of desperation and fighting the way operatives do, lending credence to my observations. Of course, this is all just the idle speculation of a fan. Who knows? You may be right and I may just be barking up the wrong tree.
@brettbaxter4860

Umm... You do realize Shepherd Book was an Ex-Operative, don't you? The episode where he gets wounded and they have to approach an Alliance ship and present his credentials and he gets superstar treatment when they see them? Plus he does some supersonic judo on the guy that tries to "bind by law" Simon and River. Jubal himself says Book isn't a Shepherd. "That's not a Shepherd. I don't know what that is."

@samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319 5 жыл бұрын
@@brettbaxter4860 We as the viewer know that...but the crew hadn't figured it out yet. And that's the angle I'm speaking from. In the movie, Malcom says that one day Book would have to tell him about himself and Book replied "No. I don't." I was saying that I would have liked to have seen a possible episode if the show had thrived where Book would have exposed that part of himself to the Serenity family by mistake; and in that moment maybe we could have seen something as viewers that would have tied him to Jubal and The movie Operative together in a way that would support my theory. But, thanks for reminding me that Jubal recognized him for who/what he was. I feel like that supports my theory even further...that Jubal himself was likely a former operative. But, like I said, I'm just playing mind games with Firefly. Only Joss Whedon himself really knows if Jubal and The Operative were two sides of the same coin; or if River was really meant to be the next generation of operative. But...all things considered, I'd like to think that there is a lot of evidence to support it.

Hi Thanks for another great video, For me, Firefly is probably my second favourite SciFi show, after Babylon 5. If Joss Whedon had been able to realise his full vision, as JMS largely was, it might have been the other way round. I know some people have trouble with the idea of old west meets outer space, but it makes sense to me. If a new colony is created on a suitable world, they would only have the technology they brought with them, so they would probably fall back on older technologies. Making more horses is easier than making cars.

These 2 shows along with the original trek are for me the highlights of the genre on television. Interesting point about Colonies, my Country had grown from a colony in the way you describe and you could still see the remnants of an older world during my childhood.

If you love Firefly and crave more stuff like it look up RollPlay's TTRPG campaign, "Swan Song" here on KZfaq. It's not explicitly or perhaps even intentionally similar to Firefly, but it quickly ends up with an extremely familiar tone and universe, and a different but similarly compelling cast of oddballs. The show ended years ago and RollPlay is no longer a thing, but like Firefly it stands on its own (if the format doesn't put you off).

American SF is sometimes called the successor to The Western. Starships and aliens replace cowboys and Indians. There's a nice exchange somewhere in James Blish's Flying Cities series where a character asks if The Space Okies are criminals, and Amalfi says they're not, but they're not respectable and the cops don't like them much. The same was true of the Firefly crew.

That is because it didn't have a chance to suck. At the end of the day because of its cancellation what we are left with are a bunch of solid episodes. When you compare though a show with hundreds of episodes verses a show with 17 you realize that Firefly was lucky. It never had that chance to be bad and I'm sure it would had a ton of bad episodes given the chance.

@@jasondiend4248 On the other hand....Most Star Trek shows took 2 seasons to get their traction and got really good on the 3rd season. TNG's first season, for instance had, maybe, 3 great episodes and a whole lotta bad ones. Firefly had its traction by episode 2. Yeah, it might've missed a chance to get worse...but I'm willing to bet it would've mostly been great due to a really good foundation establishing it.

There are fans for Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, And many many other franchises. No other fanbase is as rabid in our loyalty to any show as a Browncoat (Firefly Fan) is. I am a fan of all the franchises I mentioned before and then some as well. But Firefly and its companion movie Serenity are by far my favorite. We hold a fancy dress ball every year in a major city around the USA based on the episode Shindig. It's called the Browncoat Ball and everyone else there is also a Browncoat. It's like hanging out with 200 people you KNOW are cool as hell because we all love Firefly. I really don't see this with any other franchise. I'm not talking conventions because those are everywhere. Even if we've just met, we know we have that one thing in common and the rest falls into place.

While I don't think the Star Wars IP is ruined theatrically , I do think the IP was damaged by the divisiveness of TLJ. And even more damaged by Lucasfilm, Kennedy, & especially Johnson lashing out at fans who didn't care for the film. Movies are subjective, like any creative endeavor and to lash out at those who didn't enjoy the movie as being "toxic" hurt the IP in general. There have always been "toxic fans" in any fandom that have lashed out to people who didn't share their opinions about their favorite IPs. They are NOT the majority by any stretch of the imagination. The difference is that now thanks to social media this small extreme minority of rude people on either side of any anything have their voices magnified to unprecedented levels. It's ok to disagree with each other. It's ok to be disappointed in something. It's ok to voice that. It's not ok to be a rude arse about it. And while "toxic fans" have crossed that line, so to have Lucasfilm, Kennedy, & especially Johnsons as well as some of the their defenders. That being said the TV projects, considering the people involved, looks to be a real ray of hope of lifting the IP back up.

The thing too with Firefly is the "philosophy" behind it too!! And really starting with Serenity (the ship) herself!! In the deleted scenes Zoey talks to Simon and explains to him that the pain during the war Mal and her suffered was so terrible, with the dead bodies of friends and the mental abuses they went through, that Serenity is named after the battle in which Mal and Zoey lived through!! And her words about it was that "Serenity was so bad that you just learn to live there!" Thus states A LOT about Malcom's mental state as he was the one that named the ship!! And further Serenity isn't a "pretty ship" for a reason!! It is old, beat up and falling apart, kind of again like Malcom's mental state!! The punishment of war HAS taken its toll on him!! BUT it has many things about the ship herself most people are NOT aware of!! For starters it is Malcom's last bit of freedom, and it is also his "nothing flashy" look at "get away" with things.....kind of like the Alliance flies right by it (as Captain Kirk would) because there is "nothing to see here" so the ship is "camouflage" of sorts, which when doing crime is the PREFECT vehicle to do that in!! It literally only gets a bad rap because it is "nothing to look at" which makes it an even MORE likable little ship!! Then the major thing people OVER LOOK about Firefly is, that parts of the crew are actually the fractured parts of Malcom's soul!! You have to watch the show a few time through and THINK ABOUT IT as you listen to them, but honestly when you do you really sense you are seeing parts of Malcom's "world" in other characters!! Like Inara is Malcom's lost sense of love, Kaylee is Malcom's lost sense of family, Zoey is Malcom's lost sense of duty and honor, Wash is Malcom's lost sense of humor, Jayne is Malcom's lost sense of "can do" attitude, and Shepard Book is Malcom's lost sense of faith. But honestly it doesn't end with Simon and River either, because has you watch River is the "severe crazy" caused by the Alliance that Malcom knows all to well, and Simon is the "power struggle" to maintain control or River as he tries to figure out WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO HER!! And that same struggle IS Malcom Reynold's in a nutshell which is why he is protecting them, because he doesn't feel all alone on a ship full of people that fail to understand the mental damage the war has caused Mal to be WHO he is!!! And when you have watched it as much as I have you really get a much darker picture of the damage and loss Malcom has been through!! And you see it in HOW the crew reacts to certain things!! In the show Objects in Space when River sense Malcom and Inara talking, Mal is seriously concerned about Inara leaving and asks her "When are you going to tell the others?" and how he says it, it is almost heart broken!! And in one episode at the start you see River and Kaylee playing (fighting over an apple) in the cargo hold has the show opens and Malcom yells "Shut UP" as though they are two kids or at least two of his "kid sisters" or something, screwing around showing his sense of "family"!! I could literally go on pointing out cues like this throughout the whole show...but go back and watch it again and LISTEN close to how things are said and WHO he is talking to!! Even the way those lines are delivered seems to have more "weight to it" the second or third time around!! Though Malcom once told Joss Whedon that "I am NOT that dark of a person" meaning that Malcom's character originally was supposed to be MUCH, MUCH MORE DARK than what we were given by Fox!!! And you really see it in the movie Serenity at the end of the movie when Malcom comes out of the door to find everybody hurt and bloody!!
