I am good friends with a guy named goggin and in boot camp he responded to a simulated attack at night and got caught in the constantina wire. From them on he was known as goggentina. The point of the story is what he told me is the wire doesn't only just slow you down but at night when you cut it it's extremely loud and it reverberates around the entire band. That's what caused him to respond and told him that lesson although he screwed up oily they had to cut him out. The North Koreans used to cut through their wire all the time at the DMZ and they could tell what it was coming from by listening. Another thing people don't realize this but in the 80s the DMV was not a safe place. I know one tank Commander that was shot. My buddy was usually in a bunker providing OverWatch and they would circle the bullet holes with chalk at night so in the morning they can see how many new holes were there. Then the North Koreans kept building these tunnels that are big enough to fit tanks through and they were constantly blowing them up. One time I don't remember why they went down in this place but it was like a sewer and found hundreds of RPGs and AK-47s and machine guns all wrapped in plastic. Oh he's actually one of the guys that captured one of the migs that defected and landed on the highway. The South Korean showed up and they wanted it and their orders were to shoot anybody that got near that plane that wasn't an American including South Koreans. The other thing is this happened during a party so they were all wasted on soju.

Yeah I got to admit it's shocking to know someone actually carried such setup lol. I know it was popular for snipers/marksmen to carry SMGs as secondaries, I also know of guys in Pacific carrying BAR+shotgun setup, but BAR+Thompson has to be biggest overkill, especially considering those are two of heaviest guns of their class in WWII. BAR weighted ~8.5kg, Thompson 4.9kg, and he probably used it with drum mag which made it even heavier (at least that's the logic I'm guessing here seeing that other Rangers sported drum mags too on this action; he probably carried BAR for long range shooting and Thompson with drum for extra capacity in CQC). This guy must have been of top athletic condition to keep it up like that.

I am from Oran (the city depicted here). And my grandmother who was 20 at the time of the assault recalled vividly the bombarding of the Mersa El Kebir port and subsequent parade of Yankee soldiers, they were clearly different from the occupying French forces (friendlier) and they didn't mind the attention they were given by the locals (especially the Algerians).

From a french viewpoint, the upsetting part about all this is that the anglo-saxon leadership just decided to not tell De Gaulle they were going to land in french territory. De Gaulle being the clever political animal he was, officially supported the landings as soon as he was aware, but in private, him and his followers were, understandably so, furious.

This song is engraved upon my soul. When you said Operation Torch, this was the first piece of knowledge that immediately came to mind. I was stationed at Ft. Hood when I first heard it played. "No Mission Too Difficult, No Sacrifice Too Great-Duty First" -1st ID Motto "The Big Red One" march was composed in the summer of 1943 at Constantine, Algeria by then Captain Donald T. Kellett who was hospitalized and recovering from wounds suffered during the battle for Hill 609 at El Guettar, Algeria. It was dedicated to Major General Terry Allen, who commanded the Division in North Africa and Sicily, and who awarded Kellett the Silver Star at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia. Kellett, who retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel, became widely known throughout the Army during his 30-year military career for his marches. Colonel (Retired) Donald T. Kellett died in 1991.

@MrRikouz
@MrRikouz 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobdewey2053 That's really not what he said though. But about what you said, I'll be really curious to know why you said that "a lot of people seem to want to pretend a majority of France was involved in the resistance". Being French, I've never heard anyone who ever pretended that. The French population is rather well aware of what it meant back then to live under Nazi rule. Most of them have family stories from the occupation, it was 'only' 80 years ago. And as any other countries occupied by the Germans, the resistance has never involved the majority of the population. So who are those "lot of people"? And in France, it's also rather well known that the claim made at the liberation that France was resisting more than collaborating was a political move by de Gaulle to prevent any more popular executions of suspected collaborators and war profiteers, and get the country together to move forward after a dark era for the prestige of the nation. Not to say that no one resisted, a lot did in fact, as in all occupied nations. But never a majority as you don't fight an army with only rifles, and with innocent civilians at stake. Each occupied nation has its own names to refer to. And a large part of those resistants did not see the end of the war. As it was far more risky to be a resistant than a regular soldier. And the first assassinations of German officers in France were retaliated by the execution of 100 civilian hostages. Therefore, anyone with common sense would know that it was not a regular thing, but rather sporadic. And nobody claim it, there is no national narrative or myth about that in France. So it's rather boring to see that every time someone talks about the French resistance, there is a guy like you who need to get off topic to say that they were not the majority of the population. We all know that.

France was in the allies from september 39-June 40 then after being conquered it split in three Vichy France served the German occupiers a little like the militaries of Luhansk and Donestsk in ukraine serve Russia today. Initially Germany kept it neutral abroad in the hope that by being neutral it would prevent the US and the UK from entereing the mediterenean frok north west africa. Then you had FFL Free french of the Exterior led by Degaulle who fled to london and made an appeal for free frenchmen to join him in June 1940. in France you had the FFI Free French of the Interior/ the resistance. they weren't very united initially butwere united under Jean Moulin , he was eventually tortured to death by the gestapo but the unification held. They did hit an run attacks on German units like delaying the arrival of german panzer reinforcements towards d-day. After the liberation of Paris the FFI and the FFL unified and by 1945 the French were the third largesst allied army on the western front as they went for the invasion of germany. The americans here attacked troops of Vichy France.

"How U.S. Rangers beat the french in 1942". That's one way of looking at it. Another one would be "how Rangers part of a US landing against an underequipped, neutral french garrison, which radio coms toward command was often "what idiot gave the order to fire back ? They come to liberate us !" and got even more frequent with time, did beat some french". But i guess presenting it like they were fighting a regular enemy force instead of a reduced force doing a half hearted fight while discussing orders with their superiors would look less badass to beat for the Rangers. Especially considering in other sector american troops seemed to have still been put in some trouble.

Churchill vetoed 200.000 French soldiers from taking part in D-Day. A way to punish De Gaulle, because the Frenchman simply refused to be his puppet. Imagine that 40.000 French soldiers gave their life in Dunkirk fighting the Germans (I'm German by the way) while the British were getting on their boats.... Without the French sacrifice, the British army would be been destroyed or captured. And that's how Churchill thanked the French. Imagine the total pettiness of this man. He vetoed French engagement in D-Day (violating all agreements between the Allied) for political reasons. And the British have mocked the French for decades. "surrender", "white flag"... If I were a Frenchman, I would just hate the British with a passion. The British are very treacherous and petty and they have the audacity to accuse the French of their very own sins.

You make a video entitled "how the Americans and the English overwhelmed the French" when it was not even a battle, there was no resistance and the French were all on the side of the allies... I don't really see the point of this video, except to prove that the Americans are capable of launching an assault against the allies... A video on the battle of Bir Hakeim (3500 allies against 37 000 Germans) would be much more interesting.

It's a pretty dumb take to state that Vichy France was "on the side of the allies". At this point, there was active resistance, and it wouldn't be for another 2 days that the Vichy forces in North Africa actually submitted to the Allies. Over 1,000 Vichy troops died during Operation Torch. The fact that the assault on Arzew went so well for the U.S. was, if any one thing, down to complete surprise.
@WWFanatic0
@WWFanatic0 2 жыл бұрын
Vichy France was not on the side of the allies. They surrendered as the allied force had surprise and overwhelming but only locally. The French garrison in Tunisia let Germany reinforce and land tens of thousands of troops in the opening days. Even though Admiral Darlan had ordered a ceasefire against the US and UK, he didn't order the garrison to fight the Germans. It would have been easy as shooting troop transports out of the sky who are trying to land on your runways isn't that hard. Had he done so, the Germans would have had no ability to reinforce in Tunisia and the North African campaign ends months sooner. If the commander in North Africa refused to order the French to fight the Germans and if local commanders refused to order their men to fight the Germans, then by no means is it accurate to say that Vichy France was on the Allies side. They spent two years collaborating with Germany and their inaction/cowardice enabled Germany to prolong the campaign in Tunisia.
@WWFanatic0
@WWFanatic0 2 жыл бұрын
@Voltigeur That does not change the fact that Darlan didn't give the order. Maybe army units wouldn't have followed it, but there was a period where he was okay with ordering the troops to stop fighting the Allies but wasn't willing to order them to fight the Axis. It's also endogenous to the problem of his support: his commitment to the Vichy regime and half-hearted support of the Allies earned him detractors. Had he not continued German inspired laws of discrimination, the interment of resistance fighters, and his lack of remorse for supporting Vichy perhaps fewer Frenchmen would have wanted him dead. That said, his assassin was part of a monarchist plot to put the self proclaimed pretender and "Count of Paris" to the throne and not really part of any major power structure or entity within the resistance or French government in exile.

@@dwarvensphere1094 For the good sake of the operation, the French Army of North Africa couldn't be informed that allies would come. Defeating the French isn't a military accomplishment 🙄. Do they not get a class in basic training on how to surrender? Do they not get a white cap to use as a white flag incase they forgot their surrender flag? Doesn't the French flag have white in it for them to cut and use as a white flag? Do they not bring a white flag as part of their military kit and issued upon graduation from bootcamp? Do they not have a foreign legion made up of mostly foreign men (Officers are frenchies) because their own men will surrender? Is the foreign legion not their only legitimate fighting force? 🤔 let's speak facts mate.....
