I missed what was supposed to be the final premiere this last weekend but I really wanted this series finished in April so instead we're going to have a midweek release. Apologies to those of you who would have liked to catch the finale live but now can't make it. Thanks for all of your support throughout this project. Hoping to get another video out this weekend, which will either be the first instalment in the periphery mini-series, or the compilation video of the entire Second Succession War.

It's precisely because I only missed one that I'm so frustrated about it. Video was pretty much finished two weeks ago but I wasn't happy with the ending. Ended up just scrapping it and using the normal outro sequence.

It has been amazing...and while this is the ultimate chapter in the Second Succession War, I am hoping that you will do the Third and Fourth eventually! Until that point, I guess I'll have to content myself by going back and rewatching all the preceding Chapters...AGAIN... 😁

Interesting to see that the Second Succession War even caused such losses in the Periphery states, despite none of them being directly involved in the fighting in any way. It makes me wonder if those units were mothballed or even sold off during the war as the Periphery realised they weren't in any risk of being invaded, or if their units were or became mercs who went to fight for the Successor States.

Thank you. The plan is just to subtly start ignoring the Capellans as we get closer to 3057 and then after that just always have the map zoomed in on the northern half so they're cropped out. Don't think anyone will notice.

Your coverage of the Succession Wars has been utterly phenomenal Sven. I love how you constantly try to emphasize the true horror of these campaigns. It's so easy to get swept away in the torrents of blood spilt during these conflicts, especially for the Successor Lords and their Generals so far removed from the killing. It really grounds the whole thing and focuses the perspective to that of the common civilian. It's an aspect I wish more war-torn settings explored, so Thank You for your hard work and dedication!

War aint got time to wait for weekends, Tuesday it is! Thanks for all the effort you do Sven, this whole series has been incredible, resourceful, and will stand for a long time as the hallmark of taking something that might be considered unknowable to anyone except deep lore divers and instead has introduced it into something anyone who enjoys this universe can enjoy and for that, we all owe and thank you Edit: will say, the music seemed abit too upbeat for /just this episode/, overall been great, but the final number reads and world counts, thinking about the deaths of billions, the lost languages and cultures, the entire storylines of humans concurrent for hundreds of generations played with a track i would expect to be playing when listing battlemech statistics. Also: do whatever you need to stay away from burnout! Take a VERY well deserved break!!!

Well, I kind of missed the weekend so I guess "peace" had to wait until Tuesday. Always enjoy introducing people to some of the early history that rarely gets discussed. It's been a learning experience for me too and I was not at all expecting to find the 2ndSW. Thanks for the feedback on music. I think this was simply a case of "it's the last piece of music I downloaded which I haven't used yet and I just want to get this one finished already." Probably wasn't the best fit as you say. I might alter that for the compilation.

I am very glad the algorithm brought your BT videos to my attention initially; I have enjoyed every installment. Given my familiarity with the 3rd SW, I am looking forward to it, especially to learn the things I wasn't aware of. Do you think a "side" video about the rise of mercenaries, a typical experience for the majority, and the "second string" units worthy of mention would work? I am sure most people are familiar with the Wolfs Dragoons, the Kell Hounds, the Eridani Light Horse (et al), but, maybe not so much Hansen's Rough Riders and such. Try to not be so hard on yourself; it's a good thing you're improving as you continue on.

Cheers for the support, MKang. I'm glad you've enjoyed the series. A few people have suggested looking at some of the merc unit histories but it's not really something I want to get bogged down in. There are so many of them that once I start down that path, there's not really any end point to it. Most mercenaries don't have more than a single page of info, so either I'm covering multiple in a video that's not really focused on anything, or its just a endless stream of 2-3 minute videos on minor players.

If I've learned anything from this series so far, its to never trust a wizard in a pointy hat! ;-) All seriousness, great job and awesome presentation. I started playing Battletech many years ago via Mechwarrior, and when I hopped in the timeline was just ending the Refusal War and Operation Bulldog was about to kick off. I had no knowledge of the lore or history, and I often wondered why the Successor States hated each other so much. Now I am beginning to understand. :-)

Thank you so much for all the work you put into this series, it’s great and hugely appreciated! I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit! Honestly you’ve captured not only the details but the hopeless grinding tragedy of it all. Before the succession war series I was genuinely a pretty firm believer in picking one of the great houses and being a patriot fighting for your county. But after seeing all this I start to see why so many both players and characters in the world were just disenchanted with the houses. It feel like a massive bloody waste for nothing. Which makes me understand why so many players prefer their own mercenary units. It it helps me understand how so many people could turn to groups like Comstar or even the Clans without much resistance. Also reaffirms my love for the Periphery! On that note! Thank you for considering doing a video on the periphery and especially for one of the Aurigen Reach! I wish that they would make it fully canon, I love that Battletech game and I enjoy the lore. It would very much cool seeing you do a video on it.

I think the Succession Wars become a lot more believable as a fictional history when you consider the reality and the circumstances of technological decline in the real world, where it is usually a product of general decline of population and organizational capacity. From a standard techno-optimist viewpoint it seems inconceivable that the output of so many hundreds of worlds can result in a mere 3000 mechs apiece per state, but it isn't that knowledge was sucked out of the heads of people and they randomly became ignorant, the assembled groups of engineers and scholars and so forth who together were able to assemble factories and research technologies were scattered by the loss of hundreds and thousands of jumpships, and died off in the slow collpases of dozens of worlds. The funds to support them likewise dried up from loss of revenue from population declines, ear-marking of funds for local defense forces, devoltion of taxation to local nobles and so on. Examples are not hard to find, ancient Roman aquaducts are still used in some cities to this day, and the last American attempt at a Moon landing as of my writing this ended with the lander breaking apart in space as I recall. Suffice it to say, knowing What is not the same as knowing How, much being able to actually perform the How to get the What.

Well that's kind of what's happened here. When the war resumes in a couple years, it's at a much smaller scale than the previous two conflicts because there's barely anything left to fight with.

Been a fantastic series sir and again your work continues to improve with each one. As for suggestions for future improvements… coming into stuff like the end of 3rd and especially the 4th, maybe bring back some of those voiced quotes again from not just guests but Patreon fans or such - especially since we get so many good quotes and discussions by people in many of the books and minor novels that it be a shame to essentially miss them but also it helps to provide insight into how people are thinking/making critical military and life decisions for their merc, house and nation units. As for other small things, maybe a small series going over notable units when we push into the 3rd and 4th, covering some of the notable merc units who’ll pretty much go onto have major roles across the era - Wolf Dragoons, Kell’s Hounds, Northwind Highlanders, Eridani Light Horse, Blue Star Irregulars, Waco Rangers and McCarrons Armoured. Plus maybe some house units like the Davion Guards, Crucis Lancers, Sword of Light, Lyran Guards, Ryuken, Genyosha, Skye Regulars, Legion of Vega, etc. Might be a nice thing to be able to do small easy content vids on these units, how they may act and their military structure and triumphs… but most importantly, it’s a way to get people nice and easily associated with the primary characters who’ll pretty much centre the next few decades of story on themselves.

Are you planning to cover the relatively smaller conflicts that led up to the clans formation? SLFD exile civil war, Operation Klondike, Wolverine Annihilation etc? And/or bring scale down to planetary continent level for them Op Klondike in particular?

Having finished the First & Second, I'm starting to realise that the Galtor Campaign is probably the largest battle of the entire Succession Wars era. Think there are ~8 regiments of 'Mechs on each side. It's definitely getting it's own episode.

Well best of luck with that. I'm still lacking miniatures myself. They do appeal but I'm aware that collecting would leave me less time to read the books or make videos as there's only so many hours you can dedicate to one hobby.

The periphery doesn't really play any import part in the Succession Wars until the Andurien Secession in 3030 so they're not really gonna feature. However, I do want to give them some coverage so I'm working on a side project that looks at some of the minor factions in detail. Hoping to get the first instalment of that out this weekend.

few things 1.I agree, more music is good, would love to hear more Duane Decker (mechwarrior 3/4, mechcommander 1/2) as the era's he made music for get documented 2.While I agree that you have gotten a lot better, there's something about your age of war series that I really like 3.I don't remember if you've addressed this topic are you going to go back and cover the clan homeworlds? 4.I'd say that if the "up to the 31st century" video is looking like it's going to seriously exceed your normal video length you should split it up 5.hell yeah minor periphery powers!

I associate a lot of those early soundtracks with later points in the timeline. You'll probably see a few sneak in as we get further into the history. I am planning to cover the Exodus and Clan History but only after the initial Clan Invasion is halted.

Sure. From the Mirror's Edge: Catalyst soundtrack I used (in no particular order) Back in the Game, Benefactor, Faith, Fly Trap, Icarus, Prisoner X, Sanctuary, Thy Kingdom Come and Vive La Resistance. The outro music is A Second Life from MechWarrior 5. I also used a couple tracks from MechCommander during the Military Overview.

That hasn't happened yet. The refugees that form the League flee from the Archon's Military Disaster Act in 2866.

Makes sense that the 3rd war has so little in cannon, that's where the game begins. its stories were suppose to come from the players for the most part.

Well there's plenty of stories set in the 3000s but most are just too minor to be worth including in a history. It's the first 150 years of the 3rdSW that we know comparatively little about it.

I'm definitely going to cover it eventually, but my plan has always been to introduce the Clans in 3050 and then go back to fill in their history afterwards.

Your content was excellent when you started and has gotten better ever since. I've recently discovered Jason Skye, he does synthwave compilations and bases it around Battletech factions. Check him out, maybe he can help with music selection or editing. If you're going to start a different lore series, may I suggest doing something light-hearted like CritterTech.

Can you please remind me what the "GVRE" abbreviations in the force listings are for? As well as the light-colour, dark-colour, white, grey, dark-gray colour scheme? I admit to being a bit confused. Thanks!

It's quality and loyalty respectively. Green/Regular/Veteran/Elite and Fanatical/Reliable/Questionable. The colour represents house troops, the grey is mercenary. I'll try to remember to add a key before I upload the compilation video.

That about sums it up. There's not one mention of ComStar being present in any sourcebook I've read, so the failure seemingly lies entirely with the Successor States.
