Behind the smiles and jokes lay a dark secret. Today, I talk frankly about battling my mental health demons at Beeston Castle in an open and honest vlog about depression, suicidal thoughts, and autism.
We travel from Christleton, just outside Chester, to Wharton's Lock. We pass Egg Bridge at Waverton, telling the story of T.W. Cubbon's 'Only A Little Cockboat' before passing Tattenhall Marina.
After mooring at Wharton's Lock, Colin explores the Sandstone Trail and climbs the rocky crag to visit the breathtaking Beeston Castle - prepare for some amazing shots!

Colin, I can empathize. I got fed up with myself and suicide seemed not just an easy way out but even an attractive solution. I survived a massive drugs overdose. Notice I did not say fortunately because I eventually woke up with maybe more problems than before and I still have severe bouts of depression. If I tell you I like hearing from you about your travels (and problems), and if I tell you I find Shaun a real tonic with his infectious laughter, and that Otis is a great pooch, then maybe you will realize how important and needed you are to so many people. Stick around mate, we all need you. As always to all. xxx

@@FoxesAfloat when you shared the manchester episode and shared how much support there is for LGBTq+ people there and everywhere, i literally cried SOOO much, tears of joy, tears of pain, tears of living a life in denial. Honestly that episode was one of the handful of things that helped me finally accept and be open about my sexuality and I finally came out to a friend in real life, toward the end of pride month. It also helped me accept I dont fit the stereotypical gender binary, and now I am growing more than ever and exploring my gender identity. Your videos have brought me so so so much joy and happiness! its helped me accept myself. and seeing y'alls amazing relationship has helped me accept my own bisexuality! What I am trying to say is... THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! Love you!

Sometimes you just can't TALK. Write yourself letters. I did that when I was on the brink (laid off, my children would be better off without me (with life insurance money), pity party, I am not good enough for anyone). Not something that can be conveyed to ANYONE. I am glad you hung around again, Colin. You are an amazing videographer. Connecting with high earth is extremely beneficial. Virtual hugs from Florida!

Dear Colin. Thank you for your honest account of the ravages of depression. I suffer as well. And, I continue to fight that black dog - and, stare it down. There is no need to defeat the depression. It exists. But, I let the black dog pass, watch its path, and try to steer clear when it tries to grab me into its maw. One day at a time. Much love to you and Sean. Have lived with anxiety, panic attacks, feeling I am different, 'not in a good way' for just over 60years now. During that time I have felt that I have let myself and others down by not being 'normal'. Have thought more than once, it would be better for the people I let down due to my fears, if I wasn't here. Then I managed to push the thoughts into the cupboard at the back of my mind and lock the door. Then all is well again until the next time something opens the bloody door again. Love your honesty and always love your vlogs, brightens my day. Lovely just lovely. Thank you and best wishes

I just wanted to thank you for your honesty and to tell you it has given me some peace in a way. My brother took his life 18 months ago. And all that time I have been berating myself for failing him. Why did he leave me why didn't he let me help. If only.. your honesty has made me realise he didn't leave me he left the pain and agony he felt. He didn't reach for me because he was overwhelmed. I will always miss him but maybe now I can start to live with his choice. Maybe also I can offer you something too. There is a third choice in the burning building: take the fireman's hand or jump into his net. Don't be scared to take the hands held out to you. They belong to the people who love you and they are strong. You won't pull them into your agony , they will just hold on to you until you find your way back. This world is a wonderful place but better for you in it. Long may silver fox cruise the cut with her wonderful honest caring crew. And thank you.

Dear Colin, wow, I just felt part of my heart would be lost had you left us…. I cried while hearing your words and it was good to hear you also say you want to live. You are such a light in our world! Thank you so much for the explanation of how you felt and the analogy of the bldg on fire, that helps so much to understand it. I have no expertise or words to help but want to send love and light and let you know I, like so many others, am so glad you’re here. It makes me wonder if the energy of the city is also too much…. It’s too much for me sometimes and I don’t have issues as you. You love the outdoors and nature so much… it soothes and feeds your soul clearly. Shaun and Otis love you so much and although I understand love isn’t enough at times I’m hopeful it’s a thread to hold on to when needed. 💕💜💕

I have been there too Colin and got through it. As you say you can have plenty of people around you but unless you have been there it’s very hard for them to really understand how someone really feels and what they are going through. It’s good to talk to others that have had similar experiences of dark times and how they have got through them and spot the signs early on to avoid falling backwards again. Stay strong and enjoy your life.

Hi, Guys! Colin, on the morning I viewed this video, I had awakened with the same thoughts stream you experienced. I 100% agree when we're in this way, "talking to someone" seems pointless. We cannot see any hope on the horizon and, yes, it feels as if our family and friends would benefit from our absence. When you spoke these words, I began to weep. It was as if your words described precisely what I was feeling. All at once, I knew if you could hang on and ride it out, I could, too. The very next day, I felt so much better! It takes tremendous bravery to speak about this and know this: Your words may have saved lives. Kisses to you, Shaun, and Otis from Southern California. XOXO

I am glad to hear that you are able to express your feeling on a public forum. The face of mental health is for the most part hidden by the weight of embarrassment, and the lack of acceptance by the community. Unfortunately the amount of time and money given to this type of health care is affected by the same perceptions, bringing out into the public will help show that there is not only a need for mental health care, but also it is not to be feared. Thank you for your willingness to be counted and I do hope that by doing so you are benefiting from this exposure and release of feelings.

This is my selfish tiny bit angry comment. All this talk makes me think of Anthony Bourdain. He was my hero. He took me places I'll maybe never get to see and told me things and introduced me to amazing people and a bit about how to navigate the world outside of my bubble. You two do that as well. Every Friday at 4 we get a little bit of adventure and learning and some dirty jokes and bad puns. Bourdain gave up. It got to him. I haven't been able to watch a moment of him since. We al love you and Shaun and Otis and Dillon and the Silver Fox and this lovely thing you've created. Make the thing that comes to your head first be, "Don't quit now- there's magic left to do."

Firstly: I'm so grateful you felt able to talk to us about how you were feeling. You can always talk to us. I'm so glad and grateful that you're in this world and that you're vlogging. We love watching every week. Secondly: I assume that "to have a skinful" would have come from when alcohol was carried in pouches which would have been made back then from animal skins. I'm not 100% certain but it seems the logical explanation.

Colin you are a brave man to fight through those overwhelming feelings to get to the other side where the sun shines again and sitting on top of hill on a castle wall brings you joy. Shaun, you are a brave man to take the journey with this lovely man who occasionally gets lost in his wilderness of darkness. I so admire you both and love that you return to us with a smile, wonderful historical stories and joyful silly jokes. I always love your outtakes that make me grin and sometimes laugh loudly out loud. I send you both much love and light. I am grateful for you both - Lucy

You are needed. When things get hard, remember how much harder they would be, for the people who love us, if we were no longer there for them. It's easy to forget that we can connect to forces that strengthen us as well as the ones that push us down. I just discovered you two tonight, and I can imagine, Colin, that many people adore you. Their lives would be so much darker, without you in them. Keep finding the sources of light, please.

Poor little Moorhens. Oh, how desperate you must have felt Colin, thanks for sharing - its impossible to know how you felt but however terrible it must have been at the time just please, please, please remember that there is one thing that is special and it is this, you give us all so much, everyone that knows you, everyone that views your great vlogs, your humour, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, you give, just, "yourself". Remember - there are so many that love you to bits and love to look forward to another vlog. And its not "only" that - its all those things that haven't yet happened in your life that you must live for. Perhaps - how can I put it, perhaps we are only borrowing our life, we might bumble through life and rather like a maze of canals we spend our time taking another unforeseen turn and meeting different people, some who touch our senses more than others, some who you will touch and bring a sparkle even though you might not realise it, different experiences, like your "new" doglet Otis who popped into your life, what will the next ten, the next twenty or 30 years bring, well, many happy times and you must experience them all, you have been given your life by another hand and you must use it to the fullest. If another dark period envelopes you please notice that very tiny glow of light so far off, its not some daft bugger with a torch bringing you more ruddy work, its your life being touched by so many people that love you, that need you and you need to hold that in your sight and watch it grow into a sun soaked time of warmth and superness! In a dark time you just need to cry some and realise that there is so much more to do, people who life you might touch and bring them sparkling moments, and the one or two who flippin' well deserve to be pissed off and you are the one guy to piss 'em off! This is old Frank signing off, and I maintain that at my age there is no point in getting older if you can't be a complete nuisance to at least one person every day! So much to do and enjoy, keep on "bumbling" along young lad!! Smiley face here!!

There is an Irish guy who has just walked the entire country and blogged his journey. Over the years he also walked the Camino, the PCT (west coast of America) and cycled through Africa, all these journeys after his parents died within months of each other. Along his walk in Ireland he spoke of his anxiety and why he takes the trips he does. He also talks to the camera like you do and feels better a few days later. Anxiety and depression is tough but if you can fight those thoughts and remind yourself that people love you ❤️😍👏💪😊😊

Even after over twenty five years together, I still have moments Of feeling like that. It has taken me a while to be able to allow someone to hug me as normally I can't handle being touched. You know you have the most beautiful partner in the world but sometimes the desolation gets so bad it feels no one understands. I eventually come back to the living. Then I'm alright again. I try not to think about the possibility of when it will happen. Knowing it will happen. You and Shawn have helped me so much to have something to grip on to, on the days when I'm home alone. My corgi also helps me through the blues and seems to know when I need attention. I know Kevin would agree with me when I say this. We love you both, and feel blessed to have found your channel.

Hi Colin and Shaun, I am just so captivated by your videos and lifestyle. I marvel at your courage to leave everything behind and embrace a big change that you embarked on and are living today. I am nearly half way through your videos but playing them randomly. Stumbled upon this one today. Colin, your courage to be open about your struggles is very commendable. Makes me feel proud of you. I am currently going through a difficult time in my life and your videos are a soothing and a calming experience to make me feel comfortable and in peace.. Thank you so much for being there for us. Soon enough I will become a patreon to give it back. Thank you for the amazing content, clever film-making, wonderful narrative and the historical and geographical twist along the journey. You hand picked music is very symphonic and in tune with everything that you show us as well. Having had a partner(with autism in the family) for 5 years from Littleborough(Rochdale Canal) near Manchester and Yorkshire, made me fall also fall in love with the canals of the North and the boats. That's how I found you here on YT. I literally know that area inside out but you were still able to add more to my knowledge. I will be waiting for you "chaps" to make your way into that canal and also show us a bit of "Hebden Bridge" through your eyes. Thank you once again for all the love, enthusiasm and joy you give us. This was my way of talking to you and it certainly helped me. You are never alone. Hope this feedback helps you back.

Early methods of storing and carrying liquids including intoxicating beverages was to store them in a stomach of an animal typically sheep but also horse, camel, cow, deer and other animals harvested for their flesh. These were often covered in the hide or "skin" of the animal they came from and could be quite large holding several liters. Drinking a skin full of wine or meade would almost certainly leave one severely inebriated. So when someone has had a skin full it means they'd a lot to drink.

Thank you for that bit on depression. It was a good explanation. It is hard to describe and you did a pretty good job of it. The worst is having a panic attack during that kind of mindframe. The only times I almost killed myself was then. Took all my concentration to not. Even had a knife in my hand a few times. I'm much better these days because I'm learning how to control the anxiety better and the depression a bit too. Everyone puts it on the depressed/anxious person to reach out but you feel like shit and super low and it can be really hard to even want to talk, even if you feel a little worthy to share. It's why I tell people if they really want to help suicidal/depressed people, check in occasionally. Help us get out of our headspace or give us a hug. Develop trust and communication and figure out what they need and help them with that.

Admirable how you are so honest about your mental health problems. I spent many years when I was younger dealing with depression and still, although I know now how to deal with it, the memory of that darkness can be overwhelming. I take time out to walk in the mountains, as I now live in the Italian Alps! Second thing of note from this lovely video is, I was born in Tattenhall, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Those of us outside the depression often think there are simple solutions, not fully appreciating the inner dynamics. It's so difficult when brain fog, anxiety and distorted thinking reduces your ability to think rationally. You can't see the woods from the trees. Thank you for taking the time to talk about your thoughts Colin. Having been in situations similar many times and masking how you feel is incredibly painful, but talking to and hearing from people who are in the same mindset as you is a great way of helping to find that spark to slowly come out of a dark place. Brought a tear to my eye but makes you realise that no matter how isolated you feel, you are not on your own. You two, Dilon, Otis and your videos over the last couple years have brought so much joy to people and for that we say thank you. Take care and know that everyone watching is here you for!

When seeing this video, and listening to Colin speak of suicidal thoughts, I can feel an ache in my center. I have been medicated for depression for years, and I remember the feelings without meds. For me it’s a chemical imbalance….and if you can get on the other side of that……wait it out, meds, sleep…wait…. It has always passed. There is love, and people and dogs and sunshine just waiting around the corner. I would hate to turn on this channel and find a world without you and Shaun. Take special care.

How nice to see Steve with Smudge (Four go Narrowboating) on Amy Jo beside Egg Bridge. I agree that people need to slow down and realize that they are the visitors and to be mindful of the wildlife they are impacting. It was nice to see Gary on Chugabug........you had two of the four on camera and I know you will be on their channels as well 😁. Colin stay strong and the three of you healthy and happy. 🇨🇦

With you both making these videos, you're saving people's lives without you knowing it. Happy, positive, funny, educational. I have/had no real interest in canal boats but KZfaq introduced me about a year ago and you're both infectious - i can't stop watching. Keep being you 💪 i wish Ronan Keating didnt say it, but life is actually a rollercoaster - sometimes we have to hang on to enjoy the nicer bits 👍. See you next Friday.

Hi Colin, thanks for your frank and honest experience of mental health and suicidal thought. My cousin took his own life at the young age of 27. 24 years have gone by, and we miss him every day. Please promise me, that if you feel so bad that you are contemplating something final as taking your life, talk to Shaun, or Samaritans. This world is all the better for you being in it, trust me you nearest and dearest will be devastated if you were not around. I have suffered with mental health for years and understand where you are coming from. My hubby Sean and I so look forward to your Friday vlogs, please keep up the good work and big hugs to you both and Otis xxx Mark.
