Battling wind and rain on a cold solo wild camp in the Peak District, Kinder Scout, Wool Packs

A Trick of the Trail

Күн бұрын

Join me on a cold, wet and windy 13 mile hike in the Peak District, followed by a wild camp at the Wool Packs on Kinder Scout. I also try out the Waymark Embr 60 litre backpack for the first time and we take a little look at the features of this backpack.
The hike started at Hathersage, although I was supposed to catch the train to Edale and do a much shorter hike. However the trains weren't running that day, so I had to do it all on foot instead. This wasn't a problem as I took my time walking along the River Derwent, up Win Hill and then onto Kinder Scout.

Any channel with a Genesis album pun in it gets my subscription. Plus I'm a wild camper so whats not to love. 17KG sounds about what I end up carrying around Dartmoor. Looks like the Trekology hiking poles that I'm using as well. Great video mate.

Ha ha, you're only the second person to get that reference. Clearly a fellow music lover. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to get my bag lower than 17kg...must be all the beer. 😬 I've just got those trekking poles. I actually have a set of expensive Lekki poles also, but they are too big to attach to my tent vestibules to add strength. I plan on doing a video comparing the two at some point, as I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with them. Are these expensive poles really worth the money. 🤷🏼 Thanks so much for watching, commenting and subscribing mate.

This is a great video mate. The editing that's gone into this is fantastic, really good job fella. With your sleep system, I was always told to let your bag or quilt do the work - ie - sleep almost naked. I always use a liner, whether it's a light silk liner or a sea to summit reactor of some description. The coldest night that I ever had on trail - I was wearing all my down gear in bed! Really great video though fella, you film details that I really couldn't be bothered with, and it's great to see - keep it up!

Thanks so much mate. Means a lot. Wish I could get the channel to gain more traction, it just seems to struggle to get views and subs. 🤷 I enjoy it regardless though. I remember you telling me about sleeping in the buff in the bag. I'll give that a go next time, maybe just put my base layers on. I guess I'm just nervous doing that because I do sleep cold. Will try next time out for sure though. Thanks again matie.

Ah, thanks so much Sarah, that means a lot. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the video. Yeah, the Stone Glacier is a cracking tent. Seen me through some tough conditions. She might get another run out in Wales this coming weekend. The weather is looking a bit grizzly though.

Spot on mate, some good new gear there, I love using quilts, but I’ve now put it away and got the bag out, as you said when you’re turning during night you will feel the cold through gaps, the pad looks a bit of a faff deflating without a dedicated exit hole, but the big Agnes pads are really comfy to sleep on👌, love the look of the new pack too, looks like you can get a ton of stuff in it, looks solid and well made too, great camp mate, atb Mick 👍

Thanks mate. Yeah, I might have to put the quilt away now and go back to the sleeping bag. Which is a shame as it's so much nicer than a bag. The Big Agnes is a super comfy pad, but does have some flaws. I don't think it lives up to its R rating and the deflation is a bit of a pain. I think it will be my go to pad for warmer conditions, but I'm hoping to get my hands on the new Nemo Tensor Extreme soon. Hopefully that should keep me nice a toasty. The EMBR seems great so far. I'm hoping it'll do me well on over the coming years. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Mick.

Thanks mate. I know...I'm a right walking disaster area. Well, I'm heading out this Saturday, either the Peaks or the Berwyns, probably the Peaks as the weather looks nicer. You're more than welcome to join me pal. If I go to the Peaks I plan on heading up to Kinder Scout. If not, then yeah, we'll get something else sorted for sure. 👍🏻

Good to see a vid from u Mark... Great spot there u had, think I'll go there too. Think it's probably both the quilt and the pad making u cold. I don't use the quilt if it's under around 8 degrees, I have a similar sea to summit pad to yours.. Don't use that under about the same temp The xtherme is the only pad I use in the cold and you're not going to like it...... A sleeping bag..... Great vid thanks enjoyed it. 👍
@trickofthetrail
@trickofthetrail 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Mick. Yeah, you are probably right about the quilt pad combo. I'm going to give the quilt another chance in cold conditions and then if it's still not keeping me warm, I'll go back to my sleeping bag. I'm hoping to get my hands on the new Nemo Tensor Extreme soon, which has an 8.5 R rating, so that should do the trick.

Another nice one, Mark. Anything you need a STS minibiner to do can be done by an ITW Grimloc; 40lb hold strength, 1" webbing slot for mounting to straps or MOLLE. Never had one break or fail in 10 years. Tactical Kit has them locally.

I reckon if you’d put the foil mat over your sea to summit mat you would probably have been warmer 🤔 if not so comfortable lol 🤷‍♂️

Great Vid as always, I dont really watch non UK backpackers, but I do wonder if they also bring beer and give reviews like so many of the UK folk :) you arent a UK wild camping youtuber withought the beer it seems :) you mention you were thinking of taking your x-mid, can I ask, what conditions are the tipping point for switching it out?
@trickofthetrail
@trickofthetrail 8 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks Stu. Ha ha, I watch a few US backpackers and no, they don't really do beer like us Brits. I think adding an extra kilo or two in beer would be a bit alien to them. 😆 Beer and wild camping in the UK does appear to be synonymous. Well, the conditions in the video would have been fine for the X-Mid, but I would be nervous taking it out in high winds, especially in exposed areas like I was camped in. Although I've not tested it in 25-30 mph gusts, I think it would handle them okay, but I don't think I'd have a very comfortable night. I know my Skyscraper is up for the job, so would feel much safer. If the forecast said 30mph + gusts, I probably wouldn't take the X-Mid. Having said that, I do want to push the limits of it one day, but I'll only do that in a safer environment. Somewhere I can get back down to the car easily if things took a turn. Kinder Scout isn't really the place for that. Cheers so much for watching and commenting mate. 👍🏼
