My first ever visit to the Peak District! After a beautiful start hiking up to Middle Black Clough Waterfall, the weather took an unexpected turn for the worse up on the moors - resulting in my toughest pitch yet. It took me 40 minutes to get my tent up in the maddening winds, as the light faded and it started to rain, and I was thinking that I might end up having to emergency bivi under a rock for cover. But back in the valley, all is forgiven with a lovely refreshing morning swim in the peat-stained waters of the river :D
Apologies for the wind noise, up on the moor it was relentless and difficult to film in, despite wind muffs on everything 😬

Claire, a word about strong wind: Places that look sheltered can be deceptive. The higher you go, the stronger the wind is likely to be. Also, any solid structure that reaches high above ground will disrupt the higher-speed airflow up there, pulling it down to the ground, and then sideways. This is where those sudden, random gusts come from. You can demonstrate this on a windy day by walking in an urban area among high-rise buildings. At some point, close to a tall building, you are likely to get near blown off your feet. Yet on the same day, out in the open, whilst the wind might be strong, it won't be so overpowering, more likely steady, and from a stable direction. On this trip you made a special effort to reach those rocks up on high, in order to reach shelter. Drawn like a magnet, this might have been the worst place to pitch! Compounding matters, those rocks had gaps between them, and you pitched in line with a gap funnelling the wind right at you. It seems something similar happened at Cnicht. You chose a place high up, next to a vertical rock outcrop for shelter. While pitching, a huge blast took your hat for walkies. Next shot, another blast hit you from the opposite direction. This was a sign of downdraughts and turbulence, whether from the rock wall, or the mountain. In both cases, it might have been better camping at lower level, away from rocks or structures that could play tricks with the wind. Trees and bushes filter the wind rather than blocking it completely, so just tend to reduce its intensity, but come with their own problems. Hope that helps.

"....it mellows rapidly into a fond memory." This is the gift of challenging yourself. A friend referred to this as type 2 fun. Type 1 fun is the obvious fun stuff. Type 2 is when things go wrong, and you get through it. Then looking back, it is always the stronger of the two experiences.

I can deffo see that! 🙂 Funny you should mention, I was flicking through the Alpkit catalogue thing that I got in the post today, and it said in there about type 1 fun, type 2, type 3. definately, superficial "fun" often comes at little or no cost, it isn't earned, most of my fondest and strongest memories are of things which often sucked at the time, but i can now look back on with a smile and perhaps a little pride.

The Peak District is my back garden, as I live relatively close, it’s tougher than people think, large open moorland, plateaus, peat bogs, waterfalls and wind, did you notice the wind 🤭 is arrives without notice and can stay all day, bloody well done you, I know exactly where you were and you picked the best place to camp for a modicum of shelter, there is nowhere else up there in the wind and not camping in the dips and gullies was a smart move, they can get pretty soggy pretty quick, we’ll done you 👍

The outright honesty of your channel is refreshing, I’m finding watching blokes they are just a lot less happy to reveal what they struggled with and probably would have never admitted to spending so long setting up a tent or having to need a plan B. It’s always tough pitching a tent in high winds, especially finding’s the right place to pitch it. I always take a few of the screw in pegs that I can use as an extra level of wind protection to make me feel a bit more secure when it’s needed. It’s worth reading the two books of the first unsupported crossing of Antarctica by both Ran Fiennes and Mike Stroud. It makes putting up a tent in winds seem easy compared to the storms they needed to do it

I use it to fill with stones and use it as a ground anchor towards the wind so that guy rope wont budge. The bag has the heavier type para cord so it wont break. All in its very light and you are guaranteed one good guy rope which really helps in strong wind. Great channel please keep it up- you are a legend 👍👍

When the wind really wants to know why she is there...buffet the tent...make me start a worry but not. Your poetic words paint a vivid picture of a tent being buffeted by the wind, evoking a sense of wonder and a touch of apprehension. It's as if the wind is curious, questioning the presence of the tent in its domain. This kind of natural interaction often leads to a mix of emotions - a little worry stirred by the power of nature, but also a sense of awe at its sheer force and beauty. It's a reminder of how we are a part of nature's grand tapestry, sometimes at its mercy, yet always in the midst of its splendor. Thanks for the camp among the hills and wind...

An absolute Delight, this video. I could not imagine being there and I kept wondering if you would be blown away in the night. Fortunately you were still there in the morning. I was on a mountain years ago and lightning was unbelievable. Scary, but worth it. Thanks for the adventures.

I love your videos. Please be careful out there. Being injured is no fun. Being injured where it's difficult to communicate and be reached is a lot worse.

Paul Messner country, he's your man for the Peak District. Good effort. I'm pretty pragmatic in my approach to life, expect the worst and hope for the best. My back up now is a hammock, a tarp and a small single tent, I'm going to get more tent pegs though - bigger and more sturdy, my little titanium ones are okay but there's always that time they won't be., I saw those that Gaz & Zoe had on their recent video and they seem sensible.

Great video loving the waterfall the Peak District can be a wild place especially in wind and rain but you showed us that it can be done and it's these moments struggling putting the tent up that you will remember in years to come and think I did that. It all adds to the adventure and like you said pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can be a good thing from time to time. Looking forward to the next video.

Stumbled across your channel. During calm times I must say you have an ASMR voice. I live in Northern California with a 14,000 ft mountain in my front yard. I am impressed with your grit and positive attitude. As an outdoorsman the best piece of advice I can give you is NEVER panic when faced with adverse conditions. Panic leads to poor decision making and will make things worse. Enjoy your adventures and I look forward to more of your videos. Take care.
