This is so much more casual than the way I was taught. We were not allowed any extraneous movement, and when we did kata together, our movements had to approach complete unison. This 'mirroring' was essential to the art, and our progress was graded on our ability to match movement perfectly.

If you're referring to the video, it's not a fantasy, these men aren't reliving some fake "anime" vision. They are living a cultured and traditional way of life of the Japanese people.

Masamune flourished in the latter part of the Kamakura era, and his works are uniformly prized by all the sword connoisseurs for their excellent qualities. As far as the blade is concerned, Masamune may not exceed Muramasa, one of his ablest disciples, but Masamune is said to have something morally inspiring that comes from his personality. The legend goes thus: When someone was trying to test the sharpness of a Muramasa, he placed it in a current of water and watched how it acted against the dead leaves flowing downstream. He saw that every leaf that met the blade was cut in twain. He then placed the Masamune, and he was surprised to find that the leaves avoided the blade. The Masamune was not bent on killing, it was more than a cutting implement, whereas the Muramasa could not go beyong cutting, there was nothing divinely inspiring in it. (p.108) Suzuki, D. T., & Jaffe, R. M. (2010). Zen and Japanese culture. Princeton, N.J: Princeton University Press.

Agree 100%, and slow also shows the quality of the technique. I.e. someone moving quickly through kata can get away with bad angles/bad form because it's too hard for the observer to tell where their lines are. I have been guilty of this :)

I was under the impression that Battōjutsu was the Samurai "wild west era" quickdraw. Battojutsu with Threadgill Sensei of the TSYR .Draw your sword as quickly as possible and engage the enemy before he has drawn his sword. Note that I don't wan't to disrespect the Samurais in the clip. They are awesome!
@netiora5 жыл бұрын
So many damn idiots in the comments talking about how this is not battojutsu, or that it is not fast enough. Battojutsu encompasses the skills necessary in drawing the sword from the scabbard and following up with a cut. Do you see the guy at 1:28 drawing the sword and following it up with cuts? That is a part of battojutsu. Specifically, the Toyama-ryu guys that you see here are from a militaristic tradition so focus a lot more on incorporating traditional quickdraw methods with cutting targets. Battojutsu is not drawing the sword, cutting, putting it back in, drawing it again to cut, and rinse and repeat. That never happened. As far as speed, it doesn't mean shit if you don't do the technique correctly. There is no point in drawing super fast like an anime character if the technique isn't right, and you don't actually cut into the opponent. This is a demonstration of the school's larger organization which is meant to show the techniques of the school. It should be slow! You go to any sport, martial arts, dance, or other physical activity demonstration or seminar, the instructors will at some point, slow and break down the movements so that the important points can be observed by novices. If you think the people in this video are going as fast as they can, you are deluded.

Maybe someone can answer this but why are the swords turned upside down seems it be easier and faster to draw with the tip pointing up or even with the sword on its side rather than down. Not to mention sheathing. Better to cut off some of your index finger rather than your entire thumb.

Just a question, where is common point of balance of a sword like this ? My 1100/1200 style one handed italian sword is balanced a little bit more than one punch from the guard. That point of balance is not needed in a katana since it is more sharpened (actually italian medieval swords were almos not sharpened at all) so I suppose it is around the guard. Am I right ?

Speed may be needed for a combative draw and speed may be needed to execute a technique before a threat can effectively injure you, but, speed with a three foot razor is not necessarily the component required at any given time. These cuts, kiri, are more like cutting with a carving knife than hacking with a hatchet. Yes, speed is a necessary component of this art but finesse of technique is required. The fastest movement in the milky way may not have the technique to cut in tamashiwara.

The local police that that investigated the case suggests that the culprit is Hideo Abe (阿部英夫), member of the same battodo club as the victim. Hideo Abe seems to be jealous to see me contributing to the international battodo competition as an interperter or donating large amounts of money to the association. It appears similar to the Tonya Harding Case that happened in the US. Haha, i'm not saying that I'll make a video, I have no time to play with sticks. :) Also what I said was truth, this is nothing, this is like a karate, that gives nothing, you just show your "skills" that can do nothing to people and you get a medal... So what? In real samurai sword battle, they even wouldn't make the swords come out, real samurai would already get home.

You're already dead lol ive practised this so many times that i wore out my saya laquer from my hands gripping it this technique requires you to work out your entire body to move faster than your opponent swordsmanship is just like any other fight the hardest working man wins and the best swordsman live and breathe the way of the sword for all their lives to be perfect for that one moment you may need to draw your sword so practise as if you were trying to kill and your body wont fail you when it is needed
