BAUCAU - second largest city in Timor-Leste: day trip from Dili through Manatuto, Laleia, Vemasse

Күн бұрынLeft Dili at 7 in the morning, I headed east by a wonderful coastal road towards Baucau, the second largest city in Timor-Leste (East Timor). On the way I visited a small town of Manatuto, where you can observe surroundings from a hill with a Statue of St. Antonio. Further in Laleia town I explored stunning pink 100-years old Portuguese church.
Enjoy the stroll in the colonial old town of Baucau, where Portuguese legacy is well-preserved.

Yes, I plan to visit in my next trip. For Jaco Island I need 2 days since it's quite far from Dili. I also plan to visit Balibo and Ouecusse.

Thank you for the short visit to our beloved town, Baucau. If you look for an off-beaten track experience, Timor-Leste is one of best among others. It is small but has a lot to offer. So many beautiful cultural and natural resources to enjoy and they are all free of charge :) There are some rare pearls in Baucau ocean but still under explored. Btw, the statue is St.Joseph, the Patron Saint of Baucau. The tree is called 'hali' in Tetum. Hali will only bloom September/Novermber onwards which reminds us that it is closer to 'loron Finadu' or Day of Souls (2nd Nov every year) where Catholic religion and local tradition meet. Baucau is very beautiful, there the new city of Baucau, there years working at the Baucau Tax Extension Office , has many unforgenttable stories and tales.

Thank you! There are only few tour companies in Dili and each of them charge $200-250 for any day trips. So I paid around $220 or so for that one. It also includes Japanese caves and couple other places around Baucau which I missed due to work call that evening, so had to rush back earlier.

Yes. But it was LHD during Portuguese colonial times. After Portuguese left in 1975 and Indonesians invaded the same year, it all changed to RHD, like in Indonesia itself.

The 99% of the population there is Christian. Catholics make around 97% of them.

@@melgazarosaldariega510 They speak Tetun, their own language (sounds similar to Indonesian). Many speak Portuguese, as well. But since like 2009 they start learning Portuguese in every school. Keeping their Portuguese colonial legacy alive!
