@adamconstanza what is the culture of education in Timor Leste? Generally at what school level do people leave school and if early, where do they work?
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
There seems to be a decent number attending the university UNTL, however a lack of job opportunities available within country results in a lot of people seeking opportunities overseas, so there's very high demand for seasonal farming and fruit picking in Australia, hospitality and factory work in UK etc. for those that have the necessary language ability.

Sempre apostei no povo timorense.

I'm Portuguese and East Timor was one of the places that I was considering for buying a second/retirement home, but they don't allow foreigners to buy property. Now I get why it's so underdeveloped compared to the rest of the region and why no one really ever mentions the country.

You're correct from what I hear it's very challenging to buy land, instead I believe it's mostly leased long term from Timorese owners.

@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
That's great, perfect timing for this video then! 🙂 It really depends... Metiaut is popular as it's a nice beach/sea area, however also very popular for weddings (and loud music!) or within town, somewhere like Pantai Kelapa, Farol, Bebonuk etc. My advice would be to pick a flood free area if possible, so avoid areas too close to rivers which will often burst their banks during wet season.

Thanks so much for all these informations! I am brazilian, so I speak portughese and I also speak a little bahasa indonesia (I lived in Indo for 3 years). I am considering spend some time there and I am pretty sure I will fell kind of home. I would like to know more about safety, if there is any gym around, which is the best neighborhood for living, about nightlife, if people are chauvisnist... so many questions, I know.
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
No problem at all, glad you found it useful! Yes, there are quite a few gyms around Dili with a popular one at Timor Plaza which cost around $50 per month. In terms of housing a lot of it will depend on your work location, but some of the popular places include Metiaut (at the pool beach spot), Beto Tasi (more secluded beach spot), inner city locations like Farol, Pantai Kelapa, Bidau and many more. There are many choices of accommodation like compound living, private houses/apartments etc. Also, there is nightlife with plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars serving later at night with bands, music playing. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for the video. These are USD prices, right? Also, you show supermarket prices for veges and eggs, for example. Are there also street vendors for these things? The $400 estimate for low-end 1 bedroom - are these decent ? Do you know if AirBnB listings in Dili are reliable? thanks in advance
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
No problem at all. Yeah, all the prices are USD. The prices of fruit and veges are from the local markets. They are a little more expensive if you buy them from the supermarket however you will get slightly different choices of produce too. We do a mix of both market and supermarket. Generally, the low end houses will be somewhat basic, however any accommodation targeted to foreigners will usually have an AC unit, a fridge freezer and some other furniture. I don't know of any Air BnB's in Dili, it's certainly not something that's widely used in TL but there might be a few on there?

Hey Adam, thanks for this! I'm interested to learn more about the internet. I have a job as a digital marketer. Is it possible to work with this internet speed? Are there any offices in the town to rent?
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
Hey, Yes it's possible to work with the current internet although at times it's just a little slower than I'm used to in New Zealand but mostly OK. Although, there is a new satellite internet option available too which is supposed to be much faster but from what I've seen also much more expensive.
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
Yes, there are plenty of office renting options available around Dili too. I'm not 100% sure on prices but they will likely start around $1000 per month for something reasonable.

You're welcome. It really seems to depend whereabouts in the city you live as some places seem to have them on a more frequent basis. However we probably have one every other month or so, more often in the wet season, so no big problem. A lot of the the large compounds have generators too.

@@adamconstanza Do you think it would be easy to live comfortably on $1000 a month?
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
I guess you could, although it would take a budgeting of course. If you opted for lower cost housing of 300-400 a month, leaving approx. 600 a month/150 a week for all other expenses, that's certainly doable.
@adamconstanza

You said a can of soda is $1/= but your video showed cans of sprite and coke priced between 50 and 60 cents. It would far better to just show the prices given in the supermarket instead of just rattling away the prices quite inaccurately.

@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza Жыл бұрын
It's not cheap. However, most of the Timorese I know aren't regulary purchasing the imported items like crackers, biscuits, milk etc and instead buy the fresh local greens, local fish and large bags of rice etc. There is a large market in Dili where items can be purchased in bulk for a little cheaper.
